    This channel is great. I already wanna build my own Sephara pile with this strategy in mind. In the past I always thought the deck kind of misses blue for flying synergies and would stop halfway through with the same concern in mind as you looking at low power cards like segovian angel. Thanks for the new build!

      Sephara is incredibly good and unique! At first i tried a lavinia shield of seagate deck. But then moved into sephara instead. Kangee and inniaz is there if you wanna go wide, but sephara is the best at going tall

    In my experience, Lightning Greaves isn’t as ubiquitous in voltron as you suggest, since shroud stops your ability to target your commander with more buffs. In this deck it’s a big non-bo with Duelist’s Heritage for example. You can move the greaves to another creature for free, but that opens up a window of vulnerability for your opponents to take advantage of.

    • @33elk
      @33elk  6 месяцев назад +3

      Yeah that's true for most voltron decks but here that window of vulnerability is patched by all the single use instants the deck runs. Besides, having greaves on sephara is already a big game so minor, minor loss.
      Duelist's heritage is the only nonbo with the boots in the deck too. Flaming fist/resplendent archangel are the other two-tap enablers and they don't care.

  • @Joshy_369
    @Joshy_369 6 месяцев назад +5

    Been awhile since i've seen a video on Sephara. Before I moved her into Kaalia, I did find I won games more utilising her status as part of the 3 hit crew rather than going wide on board. Also being a cedh stax player, flying hatebears was a natural include.
    Inkmoth nexus + Sublime Archangel is a fun thing you can do too :)
    And if you want more consistency with Flagstones you can add Lotus Field/Vale, but are good on their own especially if you have Strict Proctor out.

    love hearing about your decks~~ I can't build a commander without having some weird jankiness about it so your decks have been a fresh of breath air compared to what I see around~ :3 Looking forward to what else you might make next!

    when you said I was gonna love your next video I wasn't expecting a Sephara list
    I did love it tho :'
    I didn't disagree with anything you said, I have no experience with Sephara (never built her), but I do think taking commanders in unexpected directions is a really cool deckbuilding idea, and you made a lot of good points for Sephara Voltron (it honestly looks like a very cool list, I think I'll try it out
    (I'm in a period where I'm trying other people's lists because I'm hitting a wall concerning what/how I'm building)
    I'm not really good at finding hidden gems with being new to the game and all, but I'm often surprised when I build a commander in a way that feels very obvious to me only to find out little to no one else is doing the same
    (last 3 decks I build are
    - Ramses, Assassin Lord as a Voltron list since he can one-shot the table (3% of Ramses decks)
    - Arjun, the Shifting Flame as a storm deck since it can always find its pieces (

    Really enjoyed the video! I normally don't watch deck techs, but this was just the right amount of creative without delving into absurdity or being bad for the sake of being bad that I was intrigued, and then the video itself was phenomenal. I appreciated you keeping the video on an overview level of the decisions you made and why you made them as opposed to specific cards. It makes me want to build a deck using a similar ethos, not copy your deck wholesale, which is way more fun imo.
    I've actually built a white weeny Sephara deck before, then scrapped it without ever playing it because the mana curve beat out the card draw too efficiently, with nothing to really show for it. I'd storm out a bunch of healer hawks when goldfishing... and then what. No way to turn it into something.
    I eventually pivoted that deck into a Runetail's Essence lifegain list, which kept the bits I liked while giving me more freedom with inclusions for lifegain, alt win cons, and mass Anthems like JazzyG without taking away from the soul of the deck.
    I like this idea much more! One of my biggest problems with Voltron decks is the struggle to keep decent blockers on board when board wipes are used to get around hexproof/ward. The indestructibility solves this neatly, and 7/7 for 1 is a good enough draw that I don't feel bad for not building around the indestructibility.
    I wonder at the table accessibility though - playing Voltron, boardwipe tribal, stax, and Angel of Destiny all in the same deck seems like it would take the right pod. I wonder if the stax is necessary? Everything else is pretty core to the identity of the deck.
    If there aren't enough decent cheap fliers I guess stax is too, but making a further sacrifice to the cheap fliers, either making them worse or using more expensive fliers with good non-stax effects, might be worth it to make the deck more fun for the rest of the table.

    • @33elk
      @33elk  6 месяцев назад

      I keep it to an overview for all my deck techs cuz I don’t want them getting outdated I’m happy you noticed
      You could absolutely build sephara out of a stax deck, there’s plenty of fliers with etbs I don’t run because of my hushbringer army that you could build into instead. It’ll depend on your table
      I do love seeing atraxa players and kyler players etc cry though because i shut off their whole deck with a 2 drop that also ramps my commander that also is now indestructible lol have fun :D

    I think you have a unique take on MTG that is very appreciated and I look forward to seeing you get more popular and help keep this format interesting.
    I have a Kamahl, Fist of Krosa deck that's a non-token go wide strategy where my creatures get huge with overrun on a stick. Granted Kamahl is not super popular but Caller of the Claw is a card I'm blown away is only in 13 Kamahl decks. When my board gets inevitably wiped I flash Caller of the Claw get a bunch of tokens to then pump with Kamahl to swing big.

    This is a great video. I play _Sephara_ in Brawl, and it is a very effective mono-white control/stax commander. I get so many concessions with _Curse of Silence_ followed up by _Mana Tithe_ 😈. I'm glad to see someone else out here using Sephara to punish people for trying to exist in the same room as you. I do play anthem effects, but I make sure they're more versatile than that, like _Paladin Class_ to fight interaction on my turn and give _Sephara_ double strike or _Path of Bravery_ for some easy lifegain. I don't exactly run her as Voltron, but there are a fair few swords in my list; _Anduril, Flame of the West_ is an absolutely nasty piece of work that makes redeploying _Sephara_ trivial.

    i'm an extus gamer and a card i feel is super slept on is chandra, acolyte of flame. two tokens per turn without ever having to tick down is obviously great, but the ability to rebuy spells from the graveyard can also come in handy. draw and removal are what you usually get for this, of course, but you can also flash back something like rootborn defenses when you're one blood avatar token away from winning the game after driving your command tax into the stratosphere.
    i know planeswalkers are typically thought of as too vulnerable to be that great in commander, but between an edict effect in the command zone, all of the great removal mardu has to offer, and the fact that my opponents also need to worry about killing me before they lose, chandra feels pretty safe!
    more on topic, i appreciate you trying to encourage more of us to build monocolor commanders. this is a psyop i can get behind

    Was surprised to hear that Sublime Archangel is some hidden tech. Back when I was obsessed with this deck about 4 years ago, it was one of the few means my junker of a deck could threaten to win with. Duelist's Heritage too. And I was in so deep that I was considering that enchantment (Angelic Exaltation?) for the same reason: nuking people with Sephara felt amazing.

    Thank you for this super insightful video! My favourite thing to do in Commander is building decks that are putting their own spin on a Commander. I immediately tried building my own version of this deck and I went with a spirit sub theme.
    I'd be interested in hearing your opinion on cards like kabira takedown as another mdfc or Twinblade Geist as a third source of giving her double strike, once it dies. Can't wait to see more of your content, thanks again!

      I’d rather run battle mastery than twinblade geist the front half isn’t worthwhile.

    Interesting video. My own Sephara deck is entirely mono-white flying hatebears, with the commander mostly there for the Indestructible anthem, with only a few high cost anthems like Light from Within and True Conviction. Fight or Flight
    is secret tech, since it further controls the board but the card is in only 1600 decks in EDHREC for the entire site. It's red counterpart, Stand or Fall, is another sneakily good card that controls what can attack and block, but isn't usable in this deck.

    Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar is one of my favorite cards, and I love how she synergizes really well with cards traditionally considered bad, especially by today's standards. A couple examples, I ended up putting Land's Edge (an old world enchantment that lets anyone discard cards at any time, and deal 2 damage to any player if it's a land), Lava Axe, and even Rix Maadi, Dungeon Palace as an enabler to cast her.
    For those curious, the deck is built as a discard theme focused around making a ton of food tokens to use Asmor's ability on Brash Taunter/Stuffy Doll, with supporting cards such as Fiery Emancipation and similar effects. Very janky, mildly inconsistent, but one of the most fun decks I have ever had the joy of piloting.
    And yeah, I had to type the whole name :)

      @33elk  6 месяцев назад +2

      The sublime archangel gives each of your creatures exalted. The angel + sephara is +2/+2 so all you’d need 2 other creatures and it’d be +4/+4. An 11/11 with double strike is 22 commander damage.
      You need four other creatures to cast sephara for cheap anyway so you normally get +5/+5 or more without trying.

    Great video! I love this channel! I like the stax fliers, and I’d probably play 8-12 to help get Sephara out, but when I play a color with limited card selection I like to play Oops! All Haymakers to really make those top decks count. I’d build Sephara like I did my mono red deck- lots of ramp to drop powerful spells each turn to keep up with opponents who are likely out-drawing me and out-gunning me. Then I’d focus on Sephara’s last ability by giving her indestructible and playing a one-sided boardwipe every 2 turns or so. if I need to replay Sephara I can hard cast her with mana rocks so I don’t need to take a turn off from attacking. Id want lots of mana sinks on board to tap enemy creatures or draw incidental cards from stuff like War Room. It’s a pretty similar plan to my Lathliss, Dragon Queen deck where I’m using cards like Molten Disaster, War’s Toll , Blood Moon and Mudslide to slow down opponents.

    Nice deck, I also suggest running Glory. Its a 3/3 flier, can eat an attack as a blocker, and then can provide protection to your whole board for 3 mana once it lands in your graveyard. Works good with the strategy of leaving mana open for interaction, doubles as a way to make Sephara harder to block and as a way to get in more commander damage.

I’m scared the same thing would happen with glory while also it is more mana and etc

    I feel like Commander Damage as a wincon is consistently pushed to the side for options when building a deck. A lot of people I see and play with just treat their commander as a combo/synergy piece, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but like, Queen Marchesa has Haste and Deathtouch. She absolutely does not need to just sit back, especially if the deck has a Sunforger Package and allows her to 3-tap someone. Just as an example. I frequently try to figure out what I can do to make sure that the commander isn't just a value stick. Like Hatred in my Obeka, Splitter of Seconds deck. Not only do I get to delete someone from the table, I also get ~21 upkeeps out of it. Bit of a ramble but I like the way you approached this one!

      This is a similar reason why I run Kasla over Saint Traft and Rem Karolus in my Divine Convokation deck. Obviously, the latter is significantly better with convoke since it makes tokens, but I wasn't happy with most of the convoke cards in Jeskai colors. So I made the deck more focused on tokens with a convoke subtheme. Then I threw in cards like Mace of the Valiant and Kemba's Banner since a lot of people forget that she has haste lol. It's not my primary way of winning (the dream is to have Dragonmaster Outcast making dragon tokens and using Brudiclad to turn ALL of my tokens into 5/5 flying dragons with haste), but it is a win con in the command zone.

    Probably my two most interesting decks are my Niv Mizzet Parun and Rona, Herald of Invasion - with Rona beating out Niv in my opinion. The decks are both simple in basic ways. With Niv, I just had the thought of "oh hey, you can use the 1 damage to any target to flip the battles from March of the Machine without attacking". Rona however is the main outlier, as that deck focuses on NOT transforming her and just using her for the draw and discard to trigger effects. People get a chuckle when I tell them I am not transforming Rona the whole game if I can help it, then are shocked when I swing at them with a 20/20 zombie army made by Lazotep Chancellor or suddenly go wide with 2/2 fliers from Drake Haven and Alandra.

    About the "card that should be a staple but is barely played": I run Nightmare Shepherd in my Gonti Canny Acquisitor deck. It does it all: it's a flying creature to trigger Gonti's theft effect, it protects our board of small evasive creatures from removal (and we don't care that they come back as 1/1 since they are already small) AND most of all, it help us keep the creature we stole from our opponents while making sure they don't end up in their graveyard when they destroy them.
    All this to say, i didn't expect to see it is only played in 7 out of 3000 or so Gonti decks on EDHREC.

    Man, these are some awesome videos! I'm curious if you've ever dabbled into "politics specific" brews - I've been trying to find a list that feels both fun and still powerful using mostly Bant commanders (none in particular, really) that banks on most of the older Azorius Will of the Council cards and the newer Simic LOTR elf cards... but nothing's landed thus far. I'm curious as to where you place politics on the scale of "in the deck" versus "in the game" - your comment in the Pharika video noting her ability to give others blockers really got me thinking about branching out to less "politics specific" cards that still accomplish the same goal, and more. Thanks for the insightful videos, a treat to watch.

    Personally i really like Cosmic Intervention in any white deck but especially mono white decks.
    Cosmic Intervention is a really flexible card, in the early game i can be an amazing ramp spell and late mage a protection piece. let me just explain about the ramp part since the protection part says it self.
    what you need is sac lands that sac where at least one is not on etb, so turn 2 you foretell Cosmic Intervention turn 3 you play a sac land like Evolving Wilds. DONT SAC IT NOW. on turn 4 you cast the Cosmic Intervention for its fortell cost then you play your etb sac land/tap sac land and sac the other land you played on turn 3. now they will get exiled by cosmic intervention and come back at the next end step. Now importantly is that Cosmic Intervention say until end of turn so after they come back at the beginning of the end step you can sac them again for 2 more lands and they will again return at you next opponents end step and then you sac them again for land. in total you will have ramped 4 lands and you can downscale and upscale it with more sac lands/less sac lands.
    worst come to worst and you dont have any sac lands for it, its still a fortell card and (while Cosmic Intervention is more played) Doomskar is a well known board wipe that you can trick the opponents into believing you have.

    You see the problem is almost all the cool budget commander’s with non-Tribal game-plans are Voltron in large part.
    I find it hard to justify building a fourth Voltron deck when I already have 3 fun Voltron decks at the right power level for my pods.

    • @33elk
      @33elk  6 месяцев назад +2

      When it comes to building on a budget voltron is good because when you have all your power in your commander then you need less expensive cards for your 99 since your commander is all the power you need. I plan to talk about budget someday because from time to time i like to restrict myself to something like 40-80$ and build a deck with just that. Not soon I don't think but its an idea i have and when I do there won't be much voltron on that list.

    How do you feel about Benevolent Offering and Reprieve? Maybe maximizing that stax angle with the three flying torpor orbs, as well as truce effects as they also seem to be tacked on to a handful of flyers//flyer generators, could result in some powerful strategies. I think the last three core sets had some super fun Legendary design. Sephara piqued my interest back then when I wasn't really sure how I even wanted to be playing the game yet, and I'm excited by your take on them! I've not put much thought into Sephara before, mostly just having her as one of several alternate commanders for monowhite angel decks, when one legendary angel is getting stale or too hard for the table to deal with (all are part of the deck already, I just switch which one I designate as a commander).
    I definitely agree with going the commander damage route. Any commander that can easily get to seven power or greater should at least consider it.
    I also agree that your cards should have more utility than just helping ramp out your commander. I know people sometimes meme about everything being playable in Commander, but it's not really true. You are already playing at a severe disadvantage, having a third of the resources your opponents have combined in a four-player game. Including very low impact cards with no potential outside of the early game is a surefire way to fall behind and feel like you can't participate in the game. I'd only consider it if you literally need to, such as for Jazal Goldmane, who wants to hit hard and fast with a wide board.

  • @MindTheGap97
    @MindTheGap97 6 месяцев назад +1

    Great video! I have a similar Sephara deck, it's a bit more control oriented but voltron kills are still the main wincon, did you consider running trouble in pairs or smuggler's share? I feel like they help a lot with card draw in my list, but trouble in pairs at 4mv is maybe a bit too expensive to cast reliably, it's also a really annoying card so that's also a consideration.
    As far as "unusual" commander builds I don't really have much, I have an Urza, Lord High Artificer equip deck but that's not really an unseen build, I think the most unusual list I have is a draw-go phelddagrif deck that seeks to get the game to a 1v1 state and then win by just smacking people with the commander, I also have an Oloro deck that just jams a bunch of passive wincons but that's more of a meme deck built around the fact that in the art Oloro appears to be sitting comfortably and so my wincons were thought as stuff that I can do without actively doing much.

    • @33elk
      @33elk  6 месяцев назад +1

      Smuggler’s share is too inconsistent- ive played it before in other decks, and trouble in pairs being 4 mana is bad yes, but also it has to do with it having plagiarized art it just feels “yucky” to me? Idk it’s like its tainted, i dont use the crux of fate stx printing or the lci wayfarer’s bauble for similar reason. I’d probably just stick in another monarchy card or two if i needed more draw.

      I wouldn’t run it currently because it’s a bit much of an ask to have that much mana floating around.
