Fallingwater is a house designed in 1935 by renowned American architect Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) for the Kaufmann family, owners of Pittsburgh’s largest department store. Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater is one of his most widely acclaimed works and best exemplifies his philosophy of organic architecture: the harmonious union of art and nature.
Fallingwater is located in the mountains of Southwestern Pennsylvania, also known as the Laurel Highlands, in Mill Run, Fayette County, which is about 70 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. Wright designed Fallingwater to rise above the waterfall over which it is built. Local craftsmen quarried native sandstone and other materials from the property and completed the construction of the main house, guest house and service wing in 1939.
The Kaufmann family-Edgar J. Kaufmann, Sr. (1885-1955), Liliane S. Kaufmann (1889-1952), and their son, Edgar Kaufmann jr. (1910-1989)-used Fallingwater as a vacation house during their lifetimes. In 1963, Edgar Kaufmann jr. donated and entrusted Fallingwater and the surrounding 469 acres of natural land to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy., a nonprofit conservation organization established in 1932.
Fallingwater is owned and operated by the Conservancy and open to the public to tour as a museum. Fallingwater is surrounded by 5,100 acres of natural land, streams and trails known as the Bear Run Nature Reserve. On July 10, 2019, UNESCO inscribed Fallingwater and seven other Frank Lloyd Wright-designed buildings to the World Heritage List. In addition, Fallingwater is designated as a National Historic Landmark and Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Treasure, and named the “best all-time work of American architecture” in a poll of members of the American Institute of Architects. Since the first public tours began in 1964, Fallingwater has welcomed more than six million visitors from across the globe. Travel+Leisure Magazine stated that Fallingwater is "one of the 12 landmarks that will change the way you see the world."
Fallingwater is the only major Wright work to come into the public domain with its setting, artwork and original Wright-designed furnishings intact. - Развлечения
if I had grown up as a child in that house, WHAT an adventure it would be to explore the forest and the stream area under and around the house...as well as the house itself! What a glorious home, one of the most unique and special in all the world. FLW changed the face of architecture forever!
It's a tremendous work of art. Would have loved to have been able to stay there. Too late to make it an Air B&B? Haha.
Well I didn't grow up in that house but I grew up in that area. Just up the road from this house is Ohiopyle state park and Wright's other house, Kentuck Knob. I was really lucky to grow up there. The Laurel Highlands overall is a gorgeous area full of waterfalls, forests, hiking trails, mountains, and rolling farmland.
When I was a university student in Pittsburgh I would shop in Kaufman's Department Store all the time. So one of the pebbles on the driveway of Falling Waters is thanks to me.
LOL. Thank you for your contribution!
THE MOST BEAUTIFUL house in the world!!!! ❤❤❤
Absolutely gorgeous! Thanks for watching!
The guide is adorable.
Of all the wonderful homes and other structures designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, Fallingwater is my favorite. I could imagine living there as a full-time resident and not just a weekend home. So relaxing to be in that natural setting.
There's a fantastic feeling in the air there, the water rushing while being surrounded by the beautiful nature. Truly a magical place.
I'm from England & had not heard of Frank Lloyd - Beautiful architecture that perfectly matches the stunning natural landscape!
We're glad that you found our video and got a glimpse at this treasure. Thank you so much for watching!
@@ArmstrongNeighborhoodChannel Thank you! I've found other videos of houses he's designed - real eye openers!
I hope you can take some time to further explore this great architect. He also designed the Guggenheim Art Museum in New York among many other significant structures.
@@antoniahamilton3201 I have though not the building you mention - I'll search for it.
Absolutely amazing! Great video. You were totally blessed to have a private tour. Thank you for letting us join you via RUclips.
Appreciate your kind words! Thank you for watching!
I looked this house up on RUclips for my Art Appreciation class! I had no clue it was so close to me! I just might take a road trip one day! Woooooow! ❤❤❤
So glad you have discovered this gem. It is an absolutely incredible place to visit, I hope you are able to someday. Please let us know if you can and what you think of seeing it in person! And thanks for watching!!
My god, it is breathtaking. If I owned that home, I would never leave it.
What a blessing for Edgar Jr and his partner Paul to leave this residence to the Conservancy with so much of it in original condition and still filled with their artwork and furnishings. So many of these world treasures have been lost to time.
YES! A tremendously generous gesture. We're lucky there is such a wonderful team of dedicated individuals who are keeping preserved this wonder of the world.
Absolutely love this house. Had the pleasure of visiting it in July 2023. Pictures and video don't do it justice. It really is an incredible work of art.
So glad you were able to go there! You're right, nothing can compare to the magic of being there in person. Thanks for watching!
Kitchen is plain because Wright believed kitchen spaces to be for working. Similar to that of an office or any area where a person may want a clear mind to focus and create. Great tour!! Thank you for this
In awe. ❤ TY for sharing
Thank you so much!!!!!! That was fantastic 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Thank you so much for watching. It was incredible to make this episode happen, we're so happy to share it.
Thank you so much for this admirable addition to the Fallingwater Archive...dgp/uk
Thank you!
I used to volunteer at Fallingwater years ago. Great video and the sound quality is excellent.
Best tour ever, thank you
Thank you so much!
What a lovely guide!
Same here love the dream house the guide is so innocent 😊
Great video! Good job!
Thank you so much!
That's unique.
very nice. Thanks. Unfortunately, we could not see the other rooms (e.g., the bedrooms)
We were bummed too! Haha. Definitely worth a trip out to see them though. Personally, I've (me, Dave the producer) have been there several times and done the full tour of the whole house and the guest house. Thanks for watching, and let us know if you end up seeing it someday!
In love❤..
Just WOW!
Yeah Absolutely.
❤
😍😍😍
The reason the “kitchen” looks plain is because he didn’t call them kitchens. He called them workrooms. They were simple and very functional
Wish they had shown the guest house
The rest of the tour is incredible too. The guest house, the bedrooms, the pool, the garage, all of it is awesome. We're so so thankful we were able to see and record what they were willing to share with us. Normal tours don't allow photos inside at all. And, of course, they were wise to leave some mystery there so people will need to come to take the whole tour themselves. Haha. Hope you get a chance to visit it someday!
Truly, I enjoy so much of F.L.W. work, but somehow I can't get over the fact that he built the house on the actual stone out crop where the family picniced for years. Well, now that our favorite spot is ruined, where will we go?
What is the red object left of the fireplace ?
I don't know the exact name of it, but it's a big soup kettle pot type thing that can swing out over the fire to cook right there on the fireplace. It's been a while since I've taken an actual tour, but I know they talk about it during the tour and I've seen it pulled out over too. Kauffmans used it for soups and stews and even hot beverages if I'm not mistaken. (At least I know that's what I'd use it for! Haha.)
The house & the surroundings are marvelous! These two tour guides ... not so much. I've had the privilege of visiting Fallong Water twice. The 1st time was sometime in the early 2000s. The male tour guide was considerably better than the ones giving this tour.
Yes, this episode is not a sample of the tour one would receive when visiting. Neither persons on this episode are daily tour guides. Marilyn is the host of this show and is being shown around the grounds, Ashley is the Senior Director and Curator of Education and was very kind to give us this tour on a day the facility was closed to the public. You are fortunate to have been there, it is a magical place.
