    Hi Reuben
    I’m currently signed up on the Lurssen Mastering course .
    Enjoying , the subtleties you introduce in the Mastering process .
    Currently I’m working the Zaire Park track , Loose.
    I find it takes a few revues of the content to absorb and relate what yourself and Gavin outline , but for sure I hear the difference.
    The subtleties introduced with the fain structuring are amazing . How you describe the “ Bouncing off the limiter “ really made me listen and I heard it for myself.
    I’m still a little uncertain on the Mastering chain.
    On this track , I understand you’re going
    Analogue comp , valve EQ, SS EQ, AD, Digi , Brick wall limiter
    With the Hi Fq limiting pre the B wall I believe ?
    I know the obverse answer is to use your ears with most things audio , but your explanations really help us understand , what it is we’re listening for . Kind of if you don’t know you don’t recognise it , even if present .
    Wondering the procedure for setting the Hi fq limiting ?
    Do you select gain reduction and sweep the highs , dulling in to suit ?
    Also the first compressor in the chain are we looking around 2dB max reduction , gain obviously at dictates of the digital ceiling ?
    Where I’m finding a bit of an issue , is trying to target a specific LUF level , say -14dB , structuring rather than just turning the final gain down . To achieve a balanced structure .
    I guess that’s where the experience comes in .

    This is awesome. I always use a multiband compressor to control the highs of my masters, and even my mixes often. I never knew you could do LIMITING, however, exclusively on a range of frequencies. I'm going to look into some plugins with the same function because of you, haha. Thank you!

      Waves L3 has a 4 band maximizer and multiband limiter plus a mastering version with 16 bands if you wanna check out those demos

    Wonderful insight into the process. My main challenge at times is setting the release time on a limiter so as to avoid distortion especially on the fab filter and Oxford limiter.

      The fabfilter L2 has a Audition Limiting option to listen to the difference between the input and output signal. (The effect of the limiting on the audio). This can really help to set your attack and release times.

    1. Is it at the start or end of the chain?
    2. Is the GR typically compensated for by boosting the output gain?
    3. How much GR are you usually looking to acheive?

    Do you use the MH converter on the ULN8?
    Which is your main DA for listening and which one for tracking?

    Maselec MDS-2 is your best friend in quite almost audio materials exactly for the reason mentioned here

    So this is because of knowing how to make it better by doing less, right. Your basically undoing what was done to fix the engineer who mixed it right. Also because he did a very good job your don't need to send it back right. Small fixes that make the cut right?

    Amazing video!! Any suggestions for good software plugin mastering-grade de-essers? Also, the description in the video says “Gitas - Shotgun” even though you’re working with the Samson Brothers😂❤️
    Doesn’t take anything away from the quality content in the video though. Hopefully you still answer the de-esser question lol 🙋🏾‍♂️

      Softube Weiss De-esser is superb - very heavy on the cpu though

      Tokyo Dawn Limiter no6 has a great HF Limiter module.

    Reuben or Gavin can you explain when you use the fast mode. I use the same analog unit in my chain. Is it still last in the chain or before the bus comp?

    If you listen with studio monitors is sounds like you have an intern trapped in the producer (rack) desk back there..

    Hello Reuben,
    Do you think a digital deesser after clipping the AD would still work? I don't have an analog mastering deesser.

      Yeah it would, even clipping ur highs too with a free clipper or something

      @@nikolaudio Clipping things usually makes them sound brighter, I wouldn't do that

      @@RyanMarshal11 yeah but clipping already high frequencies just tames them. It’s the dynamics that are a problem not the “brightness”.

    What is the purpose of that PCM tone in the PT session?

      It’s to set proper level going into the console. I don’t know for sure but it’s probably a 1khz sine wave.

    Nice setup and gear in your studio, but I was surprised that the vocals sit back in the mix, softer than the guitars, which for me wouldn't fly as lead vocals buried in the mix is a huge turn off for listeners....just my two senses here.
