I bumped into Keanu reeves in 1999 in London I said what's your secret for staying young he said mouisturiser. I laughed I didn't believe him I thought it was a girl thing. Seen him on a talk show the other day. Sh1t I should have started 20 years ago lol.
Can you do a video about long term effects of using lotion? How does skin evolve into being wrinkled and damaged and how does lotion prevent this? Asking as a light-skinned, orange-haired, dying biological machine...
***** I heard it makes your lips softer or more delicate as they would be normally, so you kinda have to re-apply it. Something like that. It is certainly not addictive like heroine is, I get that.
I'm just thinking the first kind of moisturizer is vaseline, the second is the regular body lotion (like nivea, johnson baby lotion... ) and the third is body butter (like shea or mango butters and carrier oils mixtures)... I wonder if my thoughts r correct ?
Your thoughts are wrong. The categories of moisturising components depends on how far they penetrate the skin or not, and if they provide or attract moisture to the skin. 1) Occlusives are heavy and waxy, stay on the skin surface to PREVENT moisture loss to help retain the moisture in skin, but do not provide or attract the moisture in the first place, so any pure heavy oil itself without any moisture or moisture-attracting humectants, like plant butters(Shea, cocoa, etc) are all occlusives. 2) Emollients are oily but lighter than occlusives so they penetrate in between the skin cells to soften skin and retain moisture. Lighter oils like pure seed oil(almond, jojoba, etc) or fruit oil(olive, avocado, coconut, etc) fall in this category. 3) Humectants penetrate in between skin cells, attract moisture from the atmosphere to the skin, and stimulates skin to produce ceramides, a skin-inherent emollient. Glycerin, hyaluronic acid, etc, fall under this category. Most commercial moisturisers contains a mixture of all 3 moisturising components in differing ratios. So commercial moisturisers like those body lotions you mentioned, contain all 3 moisturising components and not 1 single type.
Thanks for this great info and amazing inllustration. If I'm playing sport or doring heavy exercise, should I apply moisturizer? I think no, since my sweat could wash off occlusives. For emollients and humectants, will it retains my sweat under the epidermis?
I think they fall under the third kind of moisturizer, because butters and carrier oils mixtures are better and the best at moisturizing our skin. Plus they are all natural and dont contain any artificial chemical like the regular body lotions
@@tuanhnguyen2381No, coconut oil and cocoa butter are not the 3rd kind known as humectants, but they're more like emollients or even occlusives cos they don't provide or attract moisture to the skin, but they help prevent the moisture loss.
@@loverboy6149 The instructions on my shaving cream say to wash the face with water while applying. But my dermatologist says washing the face will dry the skin. So do I apply the shaving cream on my face without water? 😕
Jonathan Ryan do you have cellulite? I’ve been wondering if the rubbing of the lotion on the skin had been breaking my cellulite up ... I stopped using lotion after showering about a year ago because of depression & now that I don’t use lotion, I have cellulite!

The fountain of youth is sunscreen even on cloudy days and using retinol. People usually use sunscreen only in the summer, which is a big mistake.
Our skin takes such a direct hit from the weather so we need to care for it thoroughly.
What a great and informative video! As dermatologists, we appreciate the science behind the products we recommend to our patients!
Cosmetic Laser Dermatology what is a good recommendation?
mam im 18 oily skin pleaseee recommend me a mosturiser without harsh chemicals and fragrance. pleaseeee

I've been wondering about this for awhile! My skin has been really out of control this winter! Thanks for the knowledge!!

Same I put on lotion everyday now
I use o'keefs and i put many layers on and leave on until the lotion literally peels off.
Wow, didn't see one person rehashing the "I hate the word moist" joke in some variation. I'm proud of you guys
Lol as a non native eng speaker i can't see why the word "moist" irritates and disgusts people so much... Is it really such a thing?
I am- but I don't understand why either xD
wrr
Here we enjoy ~moist~

During the winter my hands get so dry the skin CRACKS. I know I'm alone...I'm happy this video exists, thank you for satiating my curiosity. Subbed.
woot woot!
Wait if Corneocytes are dead cells, how are they able to thank me?
Is it ok if you put moisturizer 2x a day???
I have eczema, and I’m just wondering how a substance can just help fix it
Try E45 cream. It will help with your eczema.
The acid mantle layer over the epidermis needs to be maintained as well
I’m a Mexican-white guy that never used to lotion until I came across a Bill Burr stand up where he talks about that subject
Lmao that special was great
Is there a chemical reaction when making lotion
Can you get 'addicted' to lip balm, and if so, how does it work?

Who knows but calluses are dead skin cells clumped together I believe
