    So many fantastic renditions of this song, including this one. However, the one just overpowers me is the original from the 1936 version with Robeson and Hattie! Just moves me!

    My first musical seen on West End! Memories! That's the world! I need cast recording of this guys! Such an energy, I have goosebumps still after that long time! Oh, God, yes! ♡

      It is an especially fine interpretation of this number. Especially Queenie’s reactions early in the song.

    There are a lot of interpretations of this song. I prefer the syncopated version to Ava Gardner's wistful rendition. The New London Theatre production is one of the best of the many I've seen - the talent is first rate - the arrangement satisfies my soul, and it captures the era without the stereotypes of the 1936 Hollywood film. Thank you for posting. Also, see the Vanessa Williams at the Lincoln Center production. It made me cry.

    Does anyone know where I can find the sheet music to this particular version

  • @MeowyMakes
    @MeowyMakes 7 лет назад +2

    Yes, is there sheet music to this version? The only versions I can find are it starting in the higher key with "oh listen Sister" and it's so slow. I can't find the version that changes keys like this one.

    Interesting choice for Julie.

      That’s polite, but I’ll go there. It is idiotic to cast an actress who no one would ever think is anything but Caucasian. That’s why Lonette McKee was so perfect in this role. There is great singing here, but this was a big casting mistake. If you actually know the show.

    If they do remake Show Boat for the movies, they better cast either Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey, Halsey or Grace Bryers as Julie LaVerne! It's about time that we see the character played by the right person this time around.
    Because the only time we saw Julie played by a black woman on film was Lena Horne. And that's the only one that stands out in my opinion despite it being a singing appearance in Till The Clouds Roll By.
    So whoever plans to remake Show Boat better cast one of the four ladies mentioned. Because we need the representation seen NOW.

      Back in the MGM days, Lena Horne could never have played Julie as talented as she was. This role is tricky. You have to cast someone who can pass for being white and once you know the truth, it's believable that she could be of mixed race. It she looks too white, the character could easily lie and the show has no conflict.. That's why this actress does not work. Lena Horne is one of the most beautiful women ever and I had the pleasure of seeing her in person but she could never pass for being white.

      @@richardmayora1289 Exactly. Which is why Ava was a good choice for the 1950s film version. I still prefer the 1936 film version over the 1950s film version.

      Lonette McKee played Julie in a 1980s production. Great voice, and she is of mixed race.

      Lena Horne did not do justice to the song Try Stratas or von Stade and listen asto how it should be sung.

    So many of the comments are positive of this performance. I just found the performance too casual. I don’t think the character Julie should be portrayed as this woman did it. IMHO

      @@lindaversil1121 One of the joys of live theatre verses let’s say a movie, is it is always different and that is perfectly okay. The 1994 version is absolutely incredible, but this version is incredible too. The cast here is completely their own and rocking it. Not everyone has to sound like Lonette McKee or Maria Callas for it to be a great performance.
