Mary on a cross is a play on words for a marijuana cross, 3 joints fixed together into a cross and lit at 3 ends. But also, yes... there was more than one Mary and the writer of the song pointed that out. But if you dig into the lyrics it becomes clear that the majority of it is about a band trying to make it, failing, but enjoying the ride anyway... while getting hiiiiiiigh.
This song made them popular due to the use on TikTok... You really need to read about their backstory - it is a rabbit hole worse going down... The singer is "Papa Emeritus IV" and the rest are "Nameless Ghouls"... Ghost once said that they want to be like Rammstein (they do have good pyrotechnic and a greag stage presents)... Excited for their movie this month 🎉... P.S. The song is about good old Mary Jane 😅
The lyrics of the song are ambiguously evocative and can be read in multiple ways: - You can think it's about Mary, mother of Jesus, who wasn't as holy as she seems. - You can think it's about Mary Magdalene (the proclaimed pr0stitute who could have been Jesus' wife and who was poorly regarded). - You can think it's more about friendship and how you could have been something at one point and then you ended up just not being that way. - Or you can think, and a lot of people do, that it's about how a person is trying to make it as a rock star but is too hooked on marijuana (because of the similar sound between "Mary on a..." and "Marijuana"). All very funny haha. I recommend you react more Ghost. I'm sure you'll have a lot of surprises and very good music. I love your videos!
@@pinupdoll97 Do you not know your Ghouls? I am referring to Swiss Ghoul, Jutty Taylor. He is Jamaican and New Zealander. And he's beautiful and sings like an angel and he can really dance. Gorgeous and very talented.
@@anthonyj.crowley7361 Sodo is great, but Swiss can dance and his beautiful, soaring voice of the angels at the end of Mary On A Cross. I have to say I idolize him now.
As people have said, this song has multiple layers of meaning! On the surface, there's a lot of sex and drugs innuendos, particularly to marijuana (as "Mary on a cross" sounds similar to "marijuana cross"). There's also references to being a musician/rock star and touring for a living, which can be tied into the sex & drugs meaning. The Mary can refer to Mary, mother of Jesus, or Mary Magdalene, or just be a placeholder name for someone else entirely (but if we're talking about why the name Mary specifically was chosen, refer to the first two options). However, this song does have a deeper more serious meaning about friendship and the evolution of a relationship. Its about being friends with someone and feeling one way about them but over time your relationship changes even if you didn't necessarily want it to.
To add to the other comments here that have explained well the multiple meanings behind this song, “you go down just like holy Mary” according to Tobias himself might refer to Mary Magdalene and how she “went down” in history as a prostitute, while actually possibly being Jesus’ wife.
So, Ghost's whole thing is that they're an over the top satire of the Catholic church, or I guess ANTI-Catholic church, and the band has a TON of lore and storytelling and whatnot they like to do, so your FWB interpretation is actually pretty on point. I wont get into the details because AFAIK it wasnt officially revealed (i cant remember what is canon and just my own speculation anymore lol) until the movie premier last night (yes, movie. Its MOSTLY a full concert, but there are little cutaways fit in (built into the set to ACTUALLY line up, not like family guy cutaways) to add some storytelling. If anyone is or gets into the band, I'd definitely suggest delving into the lore. it's kinda goofy, kinda sacrilegious, and all in good fun.
If you have a Ghost you have everything.
I am so happy you are reacting to them. They and Rammstein are my top two favorite bands!!!!

Ghost is literally my second favorite band after rammstein, love to see you finally reacting to some of it!

I didn´t know this band. But it´s phantastical !!!
You should look into the songs Cirice, Rats, Square Hammer, and Dance Macabre

Mary (Mary Goore) is Tobias Forges old stage name, which comes from Gary Moore which was one of the best blues/rock guitarist ever.
Swiss.... he gets me every single time. I love the whole band, every one of them are perfect.
Swedish……

Tobias was also in another band and went by Mary Gore.

You sure stop the video alot
It's not "going down' as in you know....i
Ghost early songs are way better, you should listen to songs from "Infestissumam"
It’s satanic band I won’t listen to that.
Your other reactions are fire, love the Rammstein ones
It's ok if you don't like the song, but there's
no satanic about Ghost 😅.
It's just theatre.
