It had to do with the way inheritance worked. When the husband died, his son inherited his things. Since the husband was childless when he died, the wife stood to essentially lose everything. So God told the man's brother to impregnate her so she'd have a son to inherit the house and she wouldn't lose the home. When the brother refused to get her impregnated, he was blatantly disobeying God. So that's why solo-pleasure is considered a sin. It's because a guy decided to "screw" his dead brother's wife by not screwing her.
