  • Neil Donoghue is in Lourdes, France 🇫🇷 at a brand new event to check out some downhill bikes. This isn't a proper race, it's a UCI Downhill test event from the organisers, to iron out some of the scheduling differences from last year and let the riders give their opinions on the new racing format.
It’s an opportunity for the elite teams and new organisers to have a dry run and test things out before the 2023 season. There have been changes to format and production, as well as experiments with course markings, of which riders are feeding back this weekend. As well as a chance to shake off the off-season, riders' opinions from this weekend will provide valuable insight and help shape downhill racing this season.

It's not like any one rider had an advantage or disadvantage, they're all in the same boat.if they don't like the changes they can go race a different series.at the end of the day, they are there to compete, not organise the series. Yes it's a little unfair on the teams with regards to not having adequate time to plan travel etc,but they all got the same information at the same time, and most things would have been partially pre planned anyway,it would have just been last minute finishing touches.

Very quick summary of the updates, as I was unable to find them in this video, but was able to find it on YT, so it does exist.
    - DH elite will now have a semi final run before the finals. There is a cut to finals. these will be broadcast in same day
    - points are now heavily skewed to semis and finals, very low points to qualifiers.
    - to my understanding, the last race of the season, points only in finals
    - Protected riders
    - there are protected spots for both semis and finals, meaning that if the rider is healthy, they will get a run in semi/ finals at all times. These spots are based on previous season rankings. The number of semi final protected riders also include the finals protected. ( for example, if there are 20 protected semi final slots, 5 of them are also final protected, meaning that there are not 20 unique riders, rather 15).
There will also be an increase in coverage , adding in juniors to the programming as well.

yeah there should be a lot more mtb races world wide, like road racing, were there would be main big races like the grand tours with one day classics to, this way it would compensate for riders who have a bad day but then able to make up their points in other races and add to their
general classification & so on, would make exciting events even more exciting.

Moreover making sure race runs happen within a dedicated time slot has run contrary to the sports ethos for decades. That doesn’t seem next level. That seems to be changing the sport to fit advertising expectations over the fan and racer experience.
Until proven otherwise is no next level here. The eso has done a poor job communicating the real changes happening to the sport and it isn’t about being resistant to changes, it’s about understating what the true motivations are from the eso and discovery which I believe is the parent company to GMBN. So as you allude that redbull had a conflict of interest one could argue gmbn does as well and will follow the company line into this new next level version of the sport, which nobody knows what that is.
There was no reporting here. The only discussion was about points and a semi. What actually are the changes happening to the formats and runs? Too bad you didn’t figure to ask those questions.

@KnowMtB because the race calander is crap, they care more about carbon footprint than about the racing as they aren't even a sports company, they've replaced rob commentary for a woman football commentator, the semi final / final thing is stupid and world champs is now halfway through the short season

@@BurnsRubbermost certain a much worse broadcast and i got 3 kids wanting to do stuff rather watching me watching a payed broadcast without Rob Warner.
For me this is the end of watching downhill. The same way i got bored with NHL hockey when it got so Disney.
Red bull did it very hard for the one after- who even want us to pay for it. LOL. It is pretty embarrassing to charhed us even before the first broadcast i think. They know 99% wants Rob and the concept that worked. Even so they want us billed. Well good luck. Hope it wont destroy the sport so deep

UCI is out of touch and they are falling out of favor if seems with quite a few riders. Unfortunately there's really no other option for the best riders in the world when it comes to racing. The changes they've made are clearly not popular so maybe instead of making decisions themselves they need to be open to communicating with the men and. Woman who will actually be riding these events. On top of that UCI banning riders like @lewisbuchanan for his Only Fans sponsorship is just ridiculous. UCI themselves say that riders are difficult when it comes to accepting change and this Only Fans/ @lewisbuchanan issue just shows how against change they are themselves, a bit hypocritical wouldn't you say. I see no issue with Only Fans especially since they've made it clear that they want to get involved in the sport which means more $$$ going into the sport for racers with sponsorship opportunities but the events themselves could get more support from a new brand which brings new viewers. OPEN YOUR EYES!
