    As a South African who supports Arsenal (and the Springboks of course), I’m seeing interesting similarities between Arsenal’s corner kick routine and the Springboks scrum (and more specifically “the Bomb Squad”). Innovation is never accepted kindly by those who depend on how things have always been done and didn’t see the innovation coming.
    In the Springbok context, the South African rugby team started rebranding the substitutes in a rugby game given the higher purposes they play in the Springbok scheme. They are “finishers” as opposed to starters and given the importance of physical power and energy in rugby. There are 15 starting players and 8 substitutes in rugby - convention up until 7 years ago was 5 forwards and 3 backs as substitutes (“5-3 split”). The springboks figured having more forwards (where strength is higher and stamina lower) would be to their advantage in the scrum and physical duels - “battle stats” if you will. So the Springboks ordinarily have a 6-2 or 7-1 split and change almost the entire 8 man forward starters. This has resulted in back to back world titles in 2019 and 2023. The media, world rugby, opposition teams are not pleased and make up any excuse including rule changes to try and Springbok proof rugby.
    If this advantage results in Arsenal dominating major trophies, rule changes will come!

    We do foul st corners lol. But everyone does. We just do it better plus brilliant delivery and clever movement. Rice delivery fell off a bit but it's back big time. Both sides delivery were elite against Man U. It could have been 5 or 6 just from corners.
    We should play jaws at Emirates for corners for sure lol.
    Beware the next directive is defin on pushing at corners.

  • @MichaelHattem
    @MichaelHattem 8 дней назад +2

    Jover finds structural inefficiencies in how corners are traditionally defended and then finds ways to exploit them. And he has done this multiple times now. Last season, it was countering how often keepers claim corners sent into the 6 yard box by blocking the keeper. This season, they're taking advantage of the fact that when marking zonally defenders are typically flat footed and watching the corner taker by having five attackers running from the far post behind the defenders who once the ball is kicked have to figure out what's going on.
    At some point soon, I expect to see other teams doing the same thing but of course without the quality consistent delivery and will to score we will still score more than other teams. But it’s interesting because once other teams do start to do this, he will have to devise a way to defend against it and then find a new aspect of corner defending to exploit. I’m sure that the only way to defend this routine is to man mark each player at the far post. I wonder how long it will be until other teams try that.

    I think Arteta has instilled an incredible culture of discipline when it comes to playing defense as a team. Sometimes, when we are in games where we face the dreaded midblock, it almost feels like we are letting the other team have the ball more so that we can capitalize on a mistake from our counter press. I think we have enough talent to get around the mid block central zone access issues. I think that was the difference between the first half and second half. We called out United on their mid block structure and they folded as the game wore on. We should do that to teams more when they set up this way against us.

  • @ToddParker
    @ToddParker 8 дней назад +1

    the corner kick banter is nonsense. One player in one spot and another in another spot, both see a ball and both have right to the space they are in. If we work on blocking people off that is a smart way to win the battle to the ball. As a coach myself, I have worked on that for 20 years - it is not new. I played for decades and coached for decades. EVERY TEAM I was ever part of talked about being first to the ball and winning the second ball. Phrases like "ball side, goal side" prevalent. Lastly, pundits keep asking - how do we stop Arsenal set pieces and these are former players having a laugh because they would have grown up learning how to defend set pieces. Are they that daft? probably. It is simple - they can't do anything about the delivery and we have world class delivery from either flank. However, the ball arrives at the time it arrives and that means there is timing between ball and player that can be disrupted. Ball side, goal side matters - I always worked with teams on that and the other phrase they heard was "chip the run." If you are ball side goal side and see the player trying to run by you you step in front and chip the run. It is that simple. This means the player doesn't arrive when the ball arrives because they will be in different spots. All 10 field players are responsible for this. If all 10 do it well, the keeper can use his weapon to great effect - the one player with hands. It is as simple as getting to the ball. It is very normal for upwards of 20 players being in the same relative space when the ball arrives in front of goal - that is the nature of a corner kick. Crowding has always been a thing. The pundits are having a laugh - the analysis is so bad. Jover is doing a great job, but it really is down to the delivery which is world class by Rice and Saka. However, clearly the players work on it on the training ground with him and have a plan of where to go. This is only possible if delivery is consistent and boy is our delivery consistent - WORLD CLASS. The crowding has always been a thing though, we are just better at it. You have a right to the space you are in as a player and then it is as simple as having the will to get to the ball before the other guy.

    Vicario is lightweight for an athlete. He's 6'4 but only weighs just under 12 stone. I'm 6'2" and was heavier than him as a skinny 14 year old boy (I haven't grown since I was 12). After years of training i'm just under 14 stone.
    No wonder Vicario gets muscled off crosses so easily.

    It's not that Arsenal has the best set-piece coach in the world. But probably, Arsenal is among the few teams with a manager who actually listens to his set piece coach, and not putting the set piece coach as a "nice to have" but an integral part of the overall team's strategy.

      He is easy to read for defenders after he is doing pretty much the same stuff for 3/4 years now. Add to that lack of confidence, maybe slight physical decline and you get very standard winger of not average one

    • @diehardgunner4844
      @diehardgunner4844 8 дней назад

      Martinelli needs a left 8. Declan Rice needs to play his role. Rice is playing waaay too deep. Against this Man Utd we don't need two sixes. We needed Rice on the edge of the opponent's box supporting Martinelli. He has suffered since Rice has been introduced to the midfield. The left side needs to be fed. The moment trossard came on and Merino stepped into left 8 , then the left side came alive. Most people too busy praising Rice for a more productive game to see the flaws.

    • @virupakshawalla5734

      @diehardgunner4844 Rice doesn't need to move up he needs to sit on the bench until Partgets injured, man of the match or not.....but he delivers the corners so we either get bettervat attacking or we defneed him 😗
