Club Match Fishing in the South at least, was a great way to learn innovative new Techniques, Baits and Tackle improvements as well as the camaraderie of fellow Club Anglers. Unfortunately money greed took over the Open Match Circuit by the mid 70s, with the best anglers now being sponsored by Tackle Shops and formed into Tackle Shop Teams, some of whom, were given free Baits, Tackle and so on. I and many other individuals soon realised we stood little chance in Open Matches against Anglers who were often now semi or full Professionals and quit the circuit. I fished my last Open Match in 1976. Club Matches were still fun, though i have pleasure fished only, now for past 30 Years. Money ruins Sports.
I can not think of anything worse than match fishing. Angling for me is tranquillity and being at one with nature (Somerset/southwest). Tumbling the fish out of the knotted keepnet at the weigh-in was painful to watch.
