What a great narrator Geoffrey Palmer was, and I also I can assure you a lovely man when you met him, which I did at one of The Fly Fishers dinners, he was just as you imagine, and looking back I treasure the moment. Thank you for posting this.

The guy at the start talking about having a pike break his 45lb breaking strain line, 🤣😂🤣 bless him, I know it’s a good story down the pub, told to other guys who also aren’t in the know about how breaking strains work or about line care and maintenance or even badly educated on which knots to use for different types of lines, braid or monofilament and flouro carbon etc … there’s vastly different results shown in point of destruction tests for different line types and the different knot’s used.
I mean people pull in 120lb conger eels, fishing over ship wreck’s on 45lb line and even shark and marlin fishing is done with 20lb 30lb and 40lb classes etc so for his line to break, it either had a badly tied knot that undermined it, was damaged through abrasion or even possibly old line that may have been on the reel for multiple seasons, rods hung up in the garage all year, cold and damp, rots the line over time.

The lake where the eel club where fishing is called the Lime Pond in Wigan a mile from my home, a place where I started fishing back in the mid nineties, a place where I caught my pb common carp, pb bream of just under 12lb, pb tench and my biggest ever roach at over 2lb.. place was amazing but sadly 10 years ago, a secretive carp syndicate took it over and only a select few are allowed to fish it these days.
    What a venue though!

With out getting political Dever springs looks so naff, the Welsh sea trout or the wild brown trout of many streams and rivers are real fish, as are the anglers who fish for them.

Yep, nothing beats a Welsh sea trout caught at night and I've had a few over the years. I've also had the pleasure of fishing alongside the late , great Moc Morgan.
