I'm not one to comment, but I watch the video yesterday and this morning I was bombing all my shots. I hit a few drives that were easily 50 yards further than I've been struggling with. Just one piece of the puzzle but the thumb pinch help me with every shot! Thank you!!!

Just went to the back yard to practice using this new grip. Absolutely smoking my irons long and high with little effort. Feels like I have complete control over the face of the club. Thanks!

I just had a golf lesson 9 hours ago during which I hit the best drives of my life. My instructor actually talked about this very tip of connecting the thumb and scrunching it, but when I said it didn't feel comfortable, he settled for letting me just get it much closer. But, he failed to explain how it allows one to push with the thumb, the way you did. The hammer analogy was also helpful.
We were correcting a lot of other things, such as getting a very wide swing path and keeping my arms extended straight on the extend towards target follow-through which were leading to some dramatic results, so maybe he just didn't want to add too much at once.
Anyway, i am going to try it in my garage setup shortly. Fantastic explanation of how and why this works! Thank you! I just subscribed to you channel 30 mins ago and have watched several of you tips. Great job!!
PS I am a certified tennis pro with 13 years of experience, so I'm a good authority on good instruction. I plan to teach golf down the road and will remember to explain this thumb position to future students.

Steve, I wanted to confirm that you are correct about this being absolutely key to distance AND accuracy. It’s uncanny, but I discovered this on my own a little while ago. In fact, if I don’t “shorten the thumb” for leverage, I lose most of my compression, and my results are terrible. Thanks for all you do!

This is a great tip. I've only seen one other person detail this small correction, but effective detail in the grip. Another benefit imo, is that at the top of the backswing, the thumb actually stabilizes the balance of the club because it's directly under the shaft. I also think it should be noted, don't squeeze the thumb into the hand at address so hard that you cause tension in the forearm. Keep it relaxed. Good video, thanks.

This "Simple Thumb Trick" Steve will definitely AMP UP my power! I think that this is my power leak! I place my left hand on the club as you suggest, but I don't think I have been utilizing the thumb and the last three fingers properly. I will definitely be making a correction and I'm sure that this power leak will be shut down! Well Done Steve! Keep up the good work!

Was absolutely worth doing this as a separate video. I did this yesterday and it was a light bulb moment, I'm an 11 handicap, so simple changes are not easy to come by. This made a difference immediately, it is now how I start my swing setup :))))))))) Thanks Steve!

I was amused by the guy who said he told his instructor that it did not feel comfortable. I told my instructor that same thing. His comment was to do whatever I wanted, but he wanted me to know that of the hundreds of PGA professionals, NONE of them used the grip I was using. I changed my grip

I can show you numerous videos of very well known instructors that say the opposite of this gentleman, extend more as you can the left thumb on the grip for power and hinge. This is the typical example of why golf is so confusing. There is a myriad of people that tell you to play in a certain way and a myriad that tell you to play in the opposite way.Best advise, do not listen to anybody , these instructors will bring you crazy with their contradicting tips.Listen only to yourself , go to the driving range and experiment until you will find the method that works for you

have you ever noticed spieth's left thumb, it's about as long as you can get, but he has good distance?

A lot of factors in getting distance.

@@Inmotion70 I agree but why has no one mentioned this to spieth as his left hand has been like this ever since he came on tour. I know there are a few others on tour with the same as spieth.

What loft is your 8 iron
The way clubs are made these days it could be anywhere from 31 to 39 degrees of loft
Just saying 8 iron goes 180 yards doesn’t really tell the story
And why would you want an 8 iron to go 180 yards, doesn’t that mess up all your wedge shots
    Thanks
