Have been married to a Laos lady for 13 years after living in Laos for 5 years. Simple rules really: just be kind and friendly to everyone you meet and be respectful of Laos culture. Good idea to get to know the village chief - he will likely allow you and your partner to stay together if he likes you and knows you to have good intentions.
Too many rules complicate things, and they certainly never sweat the small stuff. Getting in good with the village chief makes life a hell of a lot easier and beneficial 👌 Cheers 🍻
Guys as someone else recently married to a Lao woman after 3 years together, Todd has explained it perfectly in this video, especially the cultural aspects and the lack of public displays of affection. Laos is NOT Thailand. The woman aren't as 'westernised', they're far more conservative in their values, morals and even the modern dressed outgoing ones. They're exactly the type of women your mother would approve of 😂 Really you need to be a genuinely respectful gent if you're hoping for a relationship. The Lao women are so graceful and beautiful, I just love their traditional skirts they all wear 😍 So if you're an obnoxious drunk who likes showing off, stick to your local, or get scammed by the bar girls in Thailand 😑 From what I understand, the laws are there because 1, they don't want Lao areas turning into Pattaya. And secondly because of sex trafficking due to the gender imbalance, ( men leaving to work abroad mainly Thailand ) many Lao women were marrying foreigners, who then took away their passports and put them to work in brothels, mainly China. As a result the Lao foreigner relationships and mainly marriage applications is pretty intrusive and extensive. They want to know everything about you. It's a pain in the ass being a genuine couple, especially until you're married. But I can understand why they do it to protect their women. But as Todd says sharing a room before marriage is illegal, fine, jail, deported or ban. Personally I didn't risk it much, why potentially screw up our wedding application. We just made up for lost time once we were back in Thailand 😁😜
My wife is from Laos too. I came to Laos second time around and got to know her family and her. I married her four days later. Lots of respect to their customs and culture. Congrats mate for you wnd your marriage to your lovely Lao wife.
I am about to visit my Lao girlsfriend(soon wife). To my surprise she said that I cannot stay at her place, hotel only.Ok stay a night but not more.Affraid of police come.Strange for me but I guess this is law and tradition. But hanging out with her holding hands, travel everywhere not a problem.Guys this is not Thailand but a very charming place to visit
Wow, I am impressed how a Polish guy could manage to have a Lao girl (soon wife) 👌👍😁. There are two absolutely different worlds. Several years ago I heard about a guy who came to Laos with an economic mission from the Polish KGHM (copper mining), he felt in love with a Lao girl that he almost lost his mind (too far away countries).
When i was with my ex who was Cambodian I used to stay at her family's house when i went to visit them. Their houses usually do not have hot or running water, a/c or other amenities and perhaps they think that you would be more comfortable at the hotel. I always had the odd temptation to feed the chickens, pigs, and cows when the rooster crowed every morning. I always had the best sleep there though. I like falling asleep seeing stars in the sky and hearing Tokay Lizards singing and crickets chirping. every so often a firefly will fly in and land on my nose. Sometimes it would be a cockroach or a huge beetle
Married to a American Lao of 21 years. I have 2 kids who share Lao and American names. The people are the most kind and generous I have met. Anytime I have been to another Lao persons house. I am treated like family and feel comfortable. It was difficult at first dealing with the culture and all of the rules. Most Lao are understanding of Americans. There are quite a few who get offended and don’t ask what you really mean and take things at face value. Can be downright frustrating. At times I can only talk about the weather or i will say something that offends someone.
Okay. There is no mention at all about the chaperone thing. My wife escaped Laos with 2 male cousins and stayed in the refugee camps. The 3rd in the family to escape. Her sister and youngest brother already here in states as well as many cousins. When she got here she stayed with sister. Sister married American. For her and I to spend time together we needed to have another family member present. I was told Lao custom. The American brother-in-law is the one that got us together. He owned a Asian grocery store in town and I would shop there for home and work. To her family is the top of the ladder and that is what I was looking for.
I first met my wife in Luang Prabang and 6 months later I traveled back with my parents to ask her parents for her hand in marriage , if I went by myself her parents would have said no because they probably thought I mucking around and just wanted to have sex with their daughter. That was 20 years ago and we are still happily married.
That's the right approach. When your parents ask for the hand of a Lao girl, it lends credibility. But what about communication? linguistic challenge? What about marriage? Buddhist or Xian rituals?
This does not apply to me and my boyfriend since we live in the United States. I am Lao, first generation. My boyfriend is Japanese. Both my parents was born and raised in Laos and moved here over 35 years ago.
Hi Todd, first and foremost, this is my belated viewing of this video, "Starting a relationship with a Lao Woman" It was only in recent times that I took an interest in your vlog,,hahaha. Anyway you did mentioned that if a foreigner had an illegal relationship? there will be a fine of US500!!! My question is if you as a foreigner paid the fine, will you be able to continue the relationship?
Thanks for watching. Ok, I will ask you this.. if the police fined you for speeding, and you Paid the fine, are you allowed to continue speeding now? Or will you incur another speeding fine?
Thailand is actually also much conservative like Laos. Well, you don't see it of course in the cities but in the country side much. As foreigner you have really to follow tradition and rules if you want to be with Thai girl outside of cities. Know one German expat you got married and live there. I personally kind of like Laos way what prevent much sex tourism, corruption, criminal. What mostly tourists in Thailand does not know is that also in Thailand is prostitution forbidden. And when you see police walking trough red light districts you can imagine how it works...
Unlike the Philippines, sounds like you can find a lovely Lao woman who doesn't have at least one child in tow. "Don't draw attention to yourself" is rule #1 when in a third world country.
I get the sense that I'm enjoying your videos for future reference. You sum it up so well Todd and I also observe it in your behavior. I like the thought of losing each other at the market then meeting up when you need to. That's my preference.. Cheers mate.. P.s - Wow.. I just noticed this was 3 years ago. Still relevant I suppose..
Not bad Todd. I think things are different in getting a Lao wife in Lao or from another country where they had escaped to when the Communist took over. Inside they are raised the same way and have the same values. I think for the most part. The biggest thing is what hardships the family had to endure. Family status is a big thing as well. Is there a middle class in Lao? Will talk some more later. Take care and have a super day to both you and Neenee! Safe travels.
Yes i agree with you sir you have to be marry to them to sleep with them or unless you get a girl from tma bar thats different but still you have to be careful they can sue you for that to Laos people are the nicest people im not saying that because im from laos my self my wife is also Laos i actually went to Laos and got engaged and got her to the state and got marry her home town is in Vientiane
But marriage is more expensive because I have to pay dowry. Look I want to be righteous but can't be so. So the cheaper option of fornication is much preferable. No political party speaks against the social evil of dowry or bride price. If that's eradicated people will definitely not get involved with prostitutes.
I was born in Laos and have lived in Australia for some 42 years now. When I went to Laos, I looked like fish out of water lol. Although I look Asian, they can tell you don't belong lol.
hi i to are married to a laos lady Pouksany 3 yrs now meet here in sydney ...can you speak the laos language..fully took me 1yr to i say i can speak 90% getting there not easy but it has been fun..anyway love the videos keep them up..oh Karl here thanks
Hey Karl.. No, I'm really struggling picking up the language. Hopefully I will be able to grasp it a little better now that I'm spending more time here. 🙏
Thai women tend to be really into the money aspect of the relationship and it can get to be a big issue.....I have heard that Lao women arn't the same in general and tend to be more content.
I have a serious question. Is laos like cambodia on marriage?? In cambodia they have a age cut off for foreign men to get married to a woman. I think it is after a foreign man is 50 he is not allowed to get married. Is this the same in laos?? Thank you
Another bloody Texan!! I'm sure 80% of my US subscribers are from this great state....Legends!! Let me know when ya visiting...I'll shout ya a Beerlao 👍
@@user-oq1tr7ys5i Hahaha Whatever you just said...that all sounds great 😝👍 No plans at the moment but if we ever decide to hit the US, Texas will most definitely be on the list. Look forward to it!! Cheers 😎
Now to Lao There is a large Laotian community here in TX, most are in Fort Worth or Dallas TX. I’m a fan of your videos as well as NeeNee...if y’all get a chance to stop by ..I’ll take both of you around town.
I make a point to act like locals do. I try to learn the language, learn to cook their foods and when they ask what I think about their country I always state three positive things. In Cambodia I will tell them I love the warm climate, I think Khmer women are the hottest girls on the planet and I love Hun Sen. I usually will follow up with saying Phnom Penh is a great city for working or going to bars and clubs but I prefer Kompong Chnnang which is a small provincial city. I end with Cambodia would be a great place for retiring or vacation but I prefer China or Viet Nam for working. I figure this statement is highly positive, shows i do more then simply hang out at bars and the one negative is something that most Cambodians would relate to. If i am in China I will tell them that I think China is one of the greatest countries on Earth. I like Xi Jinping and the Chinese Communist Party as I think they do a great job at meeting the needs of Chinese Citizens. I tell them that China has the hottest women on the planet, the tastiest food dumpling being my favorite. I usually tell them that thought i love Beijing because i like the Forbidden city and the history but I prefer to live in Shenyang as it is a cool place to live and it is close to Russia. I basically will say things like this in every country I visit. I think locals appreciate that i talk positively about their country and that I act patriotic. When I am in Thailand and i hear the song for their king I always remove my hat and stand tall with my hand over my heart to pay my respect. I always see Thai's smile at that. When I am in Thailand I am Thai. When I am in Laos I am a Laotian. When I am in Brazil I am a Brazilian.
Some farangs here ignore professionals for bar girls then you likely know where it will end.some white ladies want to marry local guys ignore professionals go for Rasta guys then it means choices have consequences.you are free to choose but it can backfire.local customs are clear the realtionship is where problem starts.most farangs here jump from the frying pan into the fire.sometimes I sympathize with pensioners but it's matter of choice.
Hey Brenton... Not over there full time yet, not far off it tho. Been travelling back and forth for the last 4 years after meeting Neenee while travelling there. No, haven't lived anywhere else mate. After spending some time there it was not hard making the decision that our future is in Laos rather than Australia.
when I was with my ex who was Cambodian whenever I would go anywhere I would simply state she was my wife. I took her to Viet Nam and Thailand and she stayed in the hotel room with me and no one questioned me or her. If I and my lady are in Vietnam and Thailand what are they going to do to ask us for marriage certificates? Me and my ex were planning to have a wedding and her family knew about it as I had already paid the bridewealth. I understand that Cambodians, Laotians, Thais, Vietnamese, Burmese, Malaysians, Chinese, and Indonesians are more conservative and if she is seen with me it might make people think she is a loose woman if she is not married to me. Plus having a wife makes me look better in the eyes of locals.
@@NowinLao Actually when it comes to dating I was not aware of many of the customs that Asians have. I did not know about bridewealth. In Western countries usually the parents would pay for the wedding and provide a dowry for the groom. In South East Asia it is the opposite. Interestingly I knew they did something similar in Arab countries. I am aware if I wanted to marry an Arab woman she would be able to choose the bridewealth. This means if she really liked me she could tell me she would be happy with a kiss on the cheek. If she did not like me but did not want to say no she could say she wants the stars, the sun and moon. When my ex suggested it I was not completely shocked by her request.
@@NowinLao i do think it is more about being discreet and trying to protect her reputation. I am aware that in Asia that women date because they want to find husbands. I do not know about Laos but i know in China and Cambodia once a woman reaches 28 she is worried that she will be leftover and be unable to find a husband or have a family. I understand if she is seen having too much fun she will gain a bad reputation from her friends and family.
@@boyar1978 In Lao it's more than her reputation, it is law. It is against the law to have a physical relationship with a Lao national if you are not married. I believe this law is why Lao is not a sex tourist hot spot like many other S.E.Asian countries.
@@NowinLao is it one that they enforce or is it like in China where it is on the books and the police will enforce it if you piss them off? I know Viet nam has a similar law but i think there it is mainly the hotels that enforce it. Usually I would just tell them I am married to the person I am with because it is not like they are going to check papers. I am thinking of visiting Laos when i need to do another Visa run. I currently live in Cambodia and I am waiting for the world to open up so I can return to China to work. I mainly want to visit Laos because I want to visit all the Communist countries. So far I have been to China and Vietnam which leaves North Korea, Cuba, and Laos. Personally, if I am going to date Asian women it would be ideal for me to date Chinese as I can speak Mandarin and i tend to love Chinese people. culture and even the Chinese Communist Party. Viet Nam would also be high on my list of Asian countries to live in as I feel similar about Viet Nam as I do about China. Plus i think of Vietnamese soldiers as heroic for being able to defeat the Western Imperialists.
If you want to marry in any country you should ask your fellow farang who has been in country about local woman or man if they tell you no and give reasons then don't be smart and try it that's what I know or if you have stayed in a country for sometime then you can make a decision mail order or marrying on a tourist visa is a tragedy plus someone character.
Where to look in Laos for descent women that is family oriented? These western women are so materialistic, plus most are not grateful about what they have....
@Jacky Phantom, they're not materialistic so much as practical and realistic about money. Materialistic suggests a priority on material things. In my exerience, while it is true that Asian woman like money, they are generally more focussed on family and spirituality than material things. They are certainly a lot less materialistic than Western women.
You can't find them in the places where tourists gather. It's not Thailand though. Lao women usually get out of their home during two religious events, the Wassana and the Pavarana. They all go to their local temples to perform some merit-making activities, mostly circling several times the main building meditating with candles in the hands. The way back from the temples is the only one moment you can approach and have a chat with them, as a tourist. Of cause you have to have your eyes all around your head, because the local guys they know that too. When I was young during these two events each house used to prepare "Khao Tom" for the alms giving (sticky rice mixed with coconuts cream, mostly with half of sweet banana, wrapped in banana leaf and served stewed). In the evening with these sweets we went to the houses where we knew there are girls, we crew like a rooster, then the girl or girls got out of the house with theirs and made the exchange. This way you could have a chat with any girl you had seen and you knew where she lived (of cause you have to have...). Sadly they don't practice this beautiful tradition anymore.
I beg to differ. I am American of Lao origin married to a beautiful, tall, blued eyed girl from the Midwest. And, I couldn't disagree with you more about Western women. People every where fall under the bell curve for pretty much every personal and social attribute. You will find honest and wholesome women and men if you look in the right places. My wife is smart, over educated, kind, down to earth, and God fearing. All these qualities maker her an amazing mom, wife and daughter-in-law to my mom despite the language barrier. Truth be known, my first wife was Asian-American from Laos also, and she was the biggest *itch ever. So, race has very little bearing on character and moral values.
I would like to add one thing is that you don't go sleep at a girl's house unless you are married to her. It's our culture. One rule of law that a guy should always follow when you are in Lao is No money, No honey:)
Absolutely...there's a good chance you're not going to be invited to sleep there anyway 😝 ...but let me add, I don't believe money is as big as an incentive to Lao women in a relationship as much as being happy and loved is.
Very close to Indian culture mainly Buddhism is the connecting link. Moreover, the male traditional dress of Laos is identical. A more mellow and sober version of Thailand. Script and language food religion dress all very much alike. Women too are religious (Buddhists).

Laos is still a communist state as far and as laws go that’s what you can expect. The cultural differences between Laos and Isaan however aren’t all that much and foreign louts aren’t accepted in the villages there either. Many people in north east Thailand share the same language and customs. As with Laos, if you’re out of town it doesn’t count for much.
It is a common perception that whites have a tendency to divorce their wives on flimsy grounds. But as an Indian given the common cultural and religious Hindu Buddhist background, applying the same yardstick as for white farangs would have disastrous consequences.
Tell me please Todd, I've heard that in Thailand women over 30 yo are not desired by Thai men anymore (a bit of a generalization I know but approx true). Is that the case in Loas too ?
Hey Billmeister... Are they not desired or are the older women fed up with the Thai mans cheating ways...? I have been told Lao men are not much different... A generalization I know, but one I hear too often. I often hear the reason some Lao women look for a foreigner husband is they believe foreigners are more faithful. I'm not so sure... but I had a conversation with a Lao friend of mine, who agrees. He said it is common for Lao men to have "side chicks" and most women do nothing but put up with it. Maybe not directly answering your question, but maybe one reason why foreigners are appealing to the local women.

Your girl so pretty 😁😁 and my girl she live in Vientiane too so now we break up alrady.
ps. Sorry about my english!! 🤣🤣
I have a serious question. Is laos like cambodia on marriage?? In cambodia they have a age cut off for foreign men to get married to a woman. I think it is after a foreign man is 50 he is not allowed to get married. Is this the same in laos?? Thank you
That fruit at the beginning looked incredible.
Thank you for great video. Love it
Good for a nice video very informative on break from the job in Texas alright talk to you later!
Another bloody Texan!! I'm sure 80% of my US subscribers are from this great state....Legends!! Let me know when ya visiting...I'll shout ya a Beerlao 👍

p yeah. I help build that temple when I was young. My parents live down the street from the temple.
I lived most my life in Texas but went to Lao/Thailand every year for 25 years. In Lao now, just engaged to a Lao girl.
Thank you….got your point after the forth time you said it🤷♂️
Respect the culture where ever you are is my personal opinion on how to act and react to and with people in different countries 🇱🇦 Great insight thx
What are the rules about obtaining Laotian citizenship if you marry a Laotian lady?
Not sure of all details but the major one that discourages many is renouncing your homeland citizenship. Laos does not do dual citizenship
They can tell that you’re a foreigner even if you are a Asian cause you look ,talk, act and walk differently. It’s not hard to figure you out.
How did you end up in Lao Todd? Were you spending time there and met Neenee? Have you lived in other SE Asian countries?
Hey Brenton... Not over there full time yet, not far off it tho. Been travelling back and forth for the last 4 years after meeting Neenee while travelling there. No, haven't lived anywhere else mate. After spending some time there it was not hard making the decision that our future is in Laos rather than Australia.
I plan to do some vids like that when I'm back there 👍
when I was with my ex who was Cambodian whenever I would go anywhere I would simply state she was my wife.
Nice work Michael.. much different culture than ours ay.
Plus i think of Vietnamese soldiers as heroic for being able to defeat the Western Imperialists.
i love sao lao because lao girl is beautiful
You are like migration officer,or ministry of foreigner affair ,how lucky you are,in this world, ☆
What is your understanding of the dowry system and how much to ideally pay
They are only talking about Laotian girls in Laung Prabang. I’m wondering n why is that?
My girlfriend is Laotian...totum😘😍😍
Where does a guy go to start taking to a Laos woman if a man is serious about good intentions and marrying one?
Get yourself invited to a wedding 😉
learn something new everyday..........but also, don't piss off your GF or she'll call the cops on you! ;)
How common is Laos Dowry scams?
Lovely people. Unfortunately it is too expensive to consider living compared to other SEA countries. - Thomas Lee
No one has answered the question.
Absolutely...there's a good chance you're not going to be invited to sleep there anyway 😝
...but let me add, I don't believe money is as big as an incentive to Lao women in a relationship as much as being happy and loved is.
That is true. It sucks, doesn't it ? you always have to open your wallet first No matter where you go.
@@eitzosaelee4008 No...I think you miss my point. This is not necessarily the case in Laos as much as it is in other parts of S.E.Asia
What's This Festival.... Its Beautyful Lookest The Lao Traditions..Its Very Good
Similar to Songkram Thailand + Cambodia I think.
Very close to Indian culture mainly Buddhism is the connecting link. Moreover, the male traditional dress of Laos is identical. A more mellow and sober version of Thailand. Script and language food religion dress all very much alike. Women too are religious (Buddhists).
laos Country is pool Country but it's save to travel even Obama still travel in Luangpabang laos people are friendly

Issan was Lao territory until the French colonialist government gave it to Thailand for political appeasement.
Not just Lao. There’s Hmong Lao Mien Lahoo Thai and Cambodian
Yes , beautiful girls .
Lifestyle is different
