To be honest with you guys Al Foster actually has a lot of finesse and effortlessness he really plays very smoothly and he is truly of of my favorites. Don’t get me wrong; I adore Tony Williams too just as much!!
This man stands alone - no one else that I know of plays at that level with that feel for rhythm and variations. What a drum player! Sorely, sorely missed.
Jon Theodore is a modern drummer that has a lot of the Tony Williams DNA going on. Of course, Tony Wiliams is his own player, but Theodore comes really, really close. Check out his work with The Mars Volta and Golden. He's currently in Queens of the Stone Age, but unfortunately is pretty underutilized in that band.
I've heard some drummers say Tony's solos were just so-so. To me, that just shows that they really don't understand what it is that he is doing with those chops. He is an absolute beast. I heard a bootleg solo of him many years ago, and it was all very low volume with some incredible speed. To do a solo like that at low volume is no easy task, and I challenge all the naysayers to try to emulate what Tony did on the traps. Just incredible!!
@@mrt3023 Never. All the classic Master Jazz Drummers played in suits and tuxes all the time. It never hindered them, it just made them look all that much cooler and classier.
Vinnie Colaiuta used it on the Weckl - Gadd - Colaiuta drum offf back in the days it’s so Killer ! Terry Bozzio also on an old solo with Zappa i just love that fill ! /So badass
Genius❤️He had an unusual way of holding his traditional grip....Which I can't quite get my head around and how he makes it work...Phenomenal dynamics speed and technique👌
Tony glad I got to double bill with you at the bottom line in NYC back in 1983, you were and still are my favorite all around drummer and buddy would've agreed!!!rest in peace my brother.
He could have owned only a snare and bass drum and been just as legendary. He was like an extension of Max Roach in his use of drums like a tonal instrument. He made them sing.
Matheus Ferreira Even before. When he was still living in Boston and cut an album with the Christopher Morris band ,he was playing a yellow Gretsch kit. Vince was a big Tony Williams fan,but was also heavily influenced by Bobby Colomby.
Samsgarden At Berklee Vinnie studied with Alan Dawson, a legendary drummer & teacher who taught Tony Williams. Actually that's why Vinnie went to Berklee.
His playing is among the greatest. Whether people know it or not, everyone tries to ultimately sound like gadd, tony, bonzo and neil. No one tries to sound like buddy because they can’t. Lol.
Hey there goes one of those k's with the k on the bottom. Man i asked somrone if theyd ever seen one and i swear dude looked at me as if i just stepped out of a flying saucer. ......cheeky bastard
+TheDionysiac Hahaha! [Sarcasm:] I always believed Buddy Rich was the best drummer, and my fingers had always bled after drumming. That's normal right? That movie was garbage. I never understood what all the fuzz was about. I guess it can only be a good movie for people who aren't drummers, just like how any movie about science fiction probably pisses off every scientist.
I''m a drummer and I actually love the movie. The soundtrack is amazing. If you check the story, you'll see it's pretty reliable for the fact that many jazz musicians suffered stress by other people, including Buddy Rich. The movie wasn't supposed to explore drumming technique with too much coherence.
wanderson167 agree. Every great drummer I know is old enough to have been taught in that brutal way. I don't know of any who ever had bleeding hands from drummimg, tho. I think the less finished sticks chafe more, at least on me. I like enormous, high gloss Firth HS1 Highlanders, sadly discontinued >:(( The film makes me uncomfortable because a lot of women were in situations with men like that.
@@Nosrednawdrummer but the movie didn't even experience or explore jazz with any kind of coherence. The movie was great on its own, but it was one of the most inaccurate portrayals of jazz culture on the planet.
Kalel Vigil well...I’d say they’re pretty different as drummers it’s like comparing apples to oranges. But I will say this: Tony can touch more of what John Bingham does that the other way around.
+Lorenz Müller My original comment was trash it was completely wrong i dont know what i was thinking R RL B - 1. Right hand on smaller rack tom (right hand goes underneath left hand, which should be raised above the large tom in ready position for playing the next flam) 2. Flam on larger rack tom (starting with right hand then left) 3. Bass drum note Repeat really fast. I think that might be the easiest and most correct way to interpret that.
It's nice to hear a drummer that gives critical attention to dynamics.
Tony’s style is all about that
Yes, loud, louder, and loudest. I’d rather listen to Al Foster.
@@TheEleatic No, not at all. He also plays really soft.
then listen to al foster@@TheEleatic ?

Later era Cobham has a lot more rhythmic variations in his solo work - good stuff. Tony is a beast

Forget the drumming - - - that jacket is badass.
I thought it might have restricted movement in the solo, but no he rocked it!
@@mrt3023 Never. All the classic Master Jazz Drummers played in suits and tuxes all the time. It never hindered them, it just made them look all that much cooler and classier.
It really is. TW is the man.
Probably the most "original" drummer of our time, brilliant!
he is thoroughly enjoying every stroke too
Tony was an innovator and influenced a multitude or drummers.

Plenty to “steal” from here !
That's how it's done. Style, composition and creativity.
a master of the kit .
This is one of my favorite solos by Tony. Such fluidity, tone, and gracility. Such magnificent touch, yet also power and force. Brilliant playing.
R. I. P my al time favorite master drummer Tony Williams 🙏
A true musician. One of very few.

This drum kit sounds AMAZING!!! Wow
idk why this makes me feel a bit teary bruh its so good. takes me to a place i cannot fully explain yfm
Originality means a lot...wow...and skill with rudiments
Tony Williams......I cant describe him.
I've never heard drums played in such a satisfying manner
I know it sounds crazy, but anytime I watch Tony Williams solo ... I get hungry.
I think it’s cuz his playing his so tasty.
Ahhhthankyou.
He could have owned only a snare and bass drum and been just as legendary. He was like an extension of Max Roach in his use of drums like a tonal instrument. He made them sing.
He was such an amazingly melodic drummer I don’t want to even consider a world where Tony didn’t use toms.
Master class period.
Fantastic drummer
RIP
Genius ❤.... Woow King 👑👑👑.🎼🎼🎼.. RIP Tony Williams...
I literally feel like I am on shrooms just looking at that jacket and the drum kit , the colors man this guy is far out
that jacket is dope.
A true master
Phenomenal skill. I can't stress it enough...and I just tried!
Lately I've been noticing a lot of Tony Williams in Vinnie Colaiuta
That is true. Vinnie cites Tony Williams' 1971 release Ego [a great album - I have it] as a huge influence.
cpu554 I should be wrong, but... That was when he used to play with Zappa?

No ,he went there for Gary Chaffee.AD just happened to be on staff (but what a staff!)
Yes! Listen to those hats and those alternating foot hand rolls
His toms sound so melodical, like the drums the Goron from Zelda majoras mask play.
Just love his rolls and foot
El gran drummer del siglo XX.Unico.Creativo y hace simple lo complejo.
Sometimes , all you got to do is listen to a tonywilliams drum solo
yes!!!!!!!!
Now I realize where Vinnie Colaiuta and Steve Smith got their style from.
Lenny White is also.
Alan Dawson
Of course. Both worship Tony to this day.
& where did he get his from?

For those of you who have been wondering about Vinnie Colaiuta's inspirations. Here you go!
That jacket !
If you like this, listen to some of his work with Stanley Clarke in the '70s, particularly his solo in the song "Power". Bad to the bone.
Thank you Tony...that is badass and beautiful!,
Claramente uno de los bateristas mas influyentes de la historia.
The best of all times!!!!!
