  • Dovii Wolf Cichlid, Jaguar Cichlid & Parachromis Care 🐟 Meanest Cichlids 🐟 How to Care for Jags Cichlids, Dovii, Tiger Mota, Friedrichsthalii, Loisellei Cichlid Care with GuapoteMel
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Today we go over everything Parachromis Cichlids with special guest, GuapoteMel. We will go over one of the meanest cichlid genus.He has over 4 decades of experience caring for, breeding and raising every species in the Parachromis genus. He shares his secrets to success with all of us in this monster fish keeping 101.
    Mel goes over the 5 different species in the Parachromis family and details how to care for as follows:
    Parachromis Dovii AKA the Wolf Cichlid
    Parachromis Managuensis, Managuense AKA Jaguar, Jag Cichlid
    Parachromis Friedrichsthalii AKA Freddy, Yellow Jacket Cichlid
    Parachromis Motaguensis, Motaguense AKA Tiger Mota Cichlid
    Parachromis Loisellei
    While each species has similarities, they also have unique characteristics and traits which are discussed. Mel classifies the Parachromis into 2 (technically 3) types based on similarities they share.
    Group 1 consists on Parachromis Dovii and Parachromis Managuensis. These two species are both monster sized with expected adult size potentials of over 20" for the Jag cichlid and over 30" for the Dovii when full grown. These 2 species are also known to be on the extreme side of the aggression charts with many individuals being best housed alone. These are truly some of the meanest, most brutal cichlids out there with huge size and equally huge strength.
    Mel recommends a tank size of 500 gallons for an adult Dovii and 300 gallons for an adult fully grown Jaguar cichlid. These fish are true monsters and in order to grow to their full potential, they require equally monstrous tanks.
    Next, we look at Group 2 (and 3). This group does not get quite as large as group 1, though by no means are they small fish. In this group you will find Parachromis Motaguense AKA Red Tiger Mota Cichlid and Parachromis Fredrichsthalii AKA Freddies, Yellow Jacket Cichlid. Technically, the Loisellei would be on its own in group 3, though it does have some similarities to group 2.
    The tiger mota or Parachromis Motaguensis has an estimated full grown size of 12-14". The Freddy's or Parachromis Friedrichstahlii has the same estimated adult size of12-14"
    The Parachromis Loisellei on the other hand is the smallest of the bunch with an estimated size of about 10" which is much smaller than the monster Parachromis seen in group 1.
    Mel does a great job at explaining the origins of all the Parachromis species and gives a brief history on them. He shares some really cool information on how they live in the wild and what we can do to achieve full growth potential of these monster cichlids. These monsters originate from Central America from Honduras, Costa Rica, Belize and Nicaragua. He shares where each fish is found and what habitats they prefer.
    Mel goes over basic care including how to care for Parachromis and raise them to live to their full expected life span and to reach their full grown size potential. It was an honor to get to learn from a true monster fish keeping legend.
    Mel discusses recommended temperature to house and keep Parachromis. Everything you need to know about Paracromis Cichlids and the basics to caring for Dovii, Jaguar, Freddy, Tiger Mota and Loisellei is discussed here!
    In this video, you will see clips of GuapoteMel's MONSTER 27" Dovii he had for over 14 years before he had passed due to old age. He is an absolutely phenomenal specimen that really reached an impressive size.
    Also featured are clips from other dedicated monster fish keepers. We are super thankful to everyone who contributed footage of their amazing Dovii, Jags, Tiger Mota, Freddy and Loisellei Cichlids. All credits below!

      Thanks a lot Mel, it was a decent amount of work but well worth it. The info you shared is super helpful for everyone interested in these species. It was really cool learning more about their origins too. I never would have imagined Jags and Dovii coexisting peacefully in the wild, very interesting info for sure. We really want to thank you again for sharing your time and wisdom with us all, greatly appreciated.

    Ok, so, just having watched this video and doing a little bit of research on the Wolf Cichlid I have found an aspiration to want to keep one in a large tank in my front room! haha ... They seem so much more responsive to their keeper than most other Cichlids do.
    Well done on the video, looked great! Awesome facts from Mel there! Keep it up! :)

They know each of us and that we mean food so they seem to be fairly interactive and highly intelligent, I am sure you won't be disappointed. Thanks for the comment, it was a privilege to get to learn from a legend like Mel.

    There a story online of kids swimming in Nicaragua and apparently they were in a area of a nesting / spawning dovii and one of the kids leg was split wide open apparently very badly .... I believe all ended well however the fact that a fish! Would go after a person swimming just shows how aggressive these can be! Unbelievable!

    • @iancoronel5784
      @iancoronel5784 Год назад +1

      I am from Nicaragua and this a fairy tale, but in fact they are very agresive in spawn. The biggest one are in the Lake Apanas that is in the north region due to the cool water they tend to grow more.

      It's a possibility but would really come down to the temperament of the fish. You would also need one heck of an aquarium because peacock bass can grow into a monstrous fish, Oscars too.

  • @williamblansett5786
    @williamblansett5786 8 месяцев назад

    Jags are ambush predatots that can live in areas that have a lower oxygen content. Dovii have a particulsr grudge against Mote. Many people believe Mota are loke a smaller more muscled verison of the Dovii and this is the reason for the hatred. Mota have been known to rip bellies of tankmates. Loiselli have been reassigned parachromis Fred. though their are people that dispute the designation.

    I heard that goldfish stunts the growth of cichlids

    • @AQUANUT
      @AQUANUT  5 лет назад

      Hey there ... Well its actually much worse than just the stunting of the growth. Goldfish among others contain something called Thiaminase. Thiaminase is an enzyme found in certain fish that stops the intake of vitamin B,1 over time basically a slow death for any Cichlid ingesting these fish. Snake keepers face the same issues with Thiaminase as us fish keepers do. This site has a list of fish to stay away from. Hope it helps www.gartersnake.info/articles/2012/all-about-thiaminase.php

    • @AQUANUT
      @AQUANUT  6 лет назад +1

      +Ross Tucker sure Ross a jag would do alright in 265. dovii can get pretty big though as you seen in the video. For a dovii adult it may make your tank look a little small depending if you get a monster male.. That is still a reasonable tank size.

    Can I put a Jag with my 9 Inch Tiger Oscar and 6 inch Albino Oscar

      Maybe but it might not work out for you. Most jags are kept alone unless you have a monster tank, something over 200 gallons anyways. It's possible to have a kinda tame jag but risky.

    Dovi & jags need a 2 to 3000 gallon tank they are so restricted in anything less than 2000 gals if you can't then dont
