This is georgous!
The neutralizing with vinegar makes so much sense. Nobody has taught that. Your piece is completely level no blotches it is beautiful. Getting ready to do my 1st bleaching and have been researching all day. I feel completely comfortable now with bleaching.
Thank You!
One of the best explanations and with live demonstrations! Unlike others … Thank you.
love watching your videos! thanks for all that you do! On this process probably important to really stress that if the Bleach and vinegar mix that you will create a toxic gas that can possibly harm us. Mixing bleach with an acid such as vinegar creates chlorine gas, a toxic chemical that can be deadly at high levels. Just want to stress to your viewers to make sure the Bleach is completely dried out no matter how long they have waited before using Vinegar. Anyways love your channel!
Good info!! You are right!
@@WelcometotheWoodsBlog thank you so nice to have your comment reply 🤩🤩🙌
The combination of this blue with the natural color of the wood is just perfect 👌
Yeah looks so good
I refinish furniture too! I LOVE your finished piece! It is gorgeous! I had never bleached before and I followed your directions and the drawer I had sanded came out much lighter! Thank you for such an excellent tutorial! 😊👍🏻
Yes agreed It´s a gorgeous finish
So nice to see natural color wood. Thank you!
fabulous tutorial on using household bleach..... I was looking for this information and you relayed it so eloquently, Thanks so much.
Those old maple pieces are overlooked. Thanks for showing how to transform them.
Beautiful job! Thank you so much for being so thorough with your instructions. Just finished my piece and it turned out beautiful. Thank you for sharing!
You did an excellent job explaining the process. I am confident in this process. Thanks!
Amazing transformation of a beautiful piece of furniture. Huge thanks❤
I feel like I just watched Jessica Chastain redo furniture. Very helpful video, I'm going to use this for a much simpler project (a large simple picture frame that will become a bathroom mirror). Your hutch transformation is VERY tasteful and beautiful, I'll be watching your other videos for more helpful info.
Thanks you just solved my problem 🙌I sanded a dresser and wanted to do a stain on the top and couldn’t get the residual grey out from flat pain. Yay I will try this 👍
I love how your hutch turned out! I wish that I had more patience to do furniture.
Not owing anyone money is one of the greatest feelings of freedom in the world.
Isnt it intresting how pepole will spend $50k on a brand new
car or $70k in students loans without thinking twice, yet too
scared to invest $5k into stocks or their business?
Isnt it crazy how people are more willing to take on personal debt than invet??
Many people have it all backwards.
Are you a complete beginner to investing and have no idea where to begin?
You can reach me via the comment box or send me a friend request let’s make the best of whatever we can.
Very effective - great job! Used a roller instead of paintbrush for bleaching process.
Absolutely fantastic video and wow what a beautiful job you’ve done! I am going to attempt a table and will look for how to strip the wood 🙏🏻❤️ thank you!
This was a very helpful vid! New subscriber...well done woodworking Queen!!!!!
This video was very helpful. You did a very professional job! It looks beautiful! I want to do this to my kitchen chairs which are now cherry. I like the Scandi look.
Thanks for the video!
It's nice to know that there are people who strive for quality and dare to work and use chemicals with due care!
I've been using laundry bleach for years, for many applications around the house and specially in the kitchen!
I'm not a chemist, but I remember reading that you do not need to neutralise the wood!
That's because the bleach later turns acidic.
Oxalic acid is used by professionals for bleaching wood and this must be neutralised with bleach or there could be damage to the fibres.
Also, wood dyes are now freely available and I've seen pictures of a beautifully red finished grand piano which the grains fully visible.
Keeping the wood grain visible, for me, means good aesthetic sense!
That was quite a responsibility tackling such a job and many would shy away from it!
Do not need to neutralise the wood or do need to? I have an old pine banister which I paint stripped with a heat gun only to find a dark stained finish. I’ve sanded it down a bit and it looks streaky which I quite like but probably not for most. Considering using this bleach method but was a little concerned if it doesn’t come out looking good and I decide to stain it, all these different chemicals, bleach, vinegar, stains. Any advice appreciated by this complete novice.
I have solid honey stained oak kitchen cabinets...a lot of them! I’m desperate to change them but reluctant to paint. This looks like a wonderful alternative...!
This piece is absolutely Beautiful!! Great job!
This is a stunning transformation well done!!😍Motivating me to do this to my furniture now!
Such a transformation it looks fantastic, way to go Melissa you,ve taken a dowdy old looking piece of furniture and made it in to a great modern piece. I didn't even know that you could bleach wood and I've only been working with the stuff for thirty years. Thanks for the video.
Absolutely BEAUTIFUL
Melissa, nice job and transformation of this old hutch. The contrasting color on the inside really pops nicely.
Thanks I never knew that I could bleach wood. 👍👍
This is a beautiful wood. Good job! I wonder what sealant you use to keep the natural wood tone?
For light use projects I usually use natural wax for a totally clear and matte sheen finish. For high use projects I usually combat the color shift by white washing the wood lightly before sealing with polycrylic. If I'm staining a medium to dark shade I'd choose polyurethane because it's more durable and the yellowish tint won't be noticeable. Hope this helps!
Melissa, I have viewed your video countless times and am continually inspired by this piece. If you can do it, so can I. I'm presently working a very very reddish table and hope to bleach it as well. Thank you so much for your thorough and informative tutoring!
Same here :) A dark vanity unit that I've removed the stain of but now it's ginger so I'm looking to whiten it down to create a beachy vibe :)
Thanks for this video! WE just bought my daughter a heavy twin wooden bed. It was way too dark, so I'm going to use your suggestions and use bleach!
This is an awesome video!! Thank you for sharing and taking the time to do this.
This is so beautiful.
what did you use to seal it for the last part? polycrylic?
I want to know this too! I love that it didn’t turn any orange tone…
Great videos and to the point 👍. Thank you
Great video. Very clearly explained. Now I’m going to see how it works for me. Thanks
Absolutely beautiful!
The piece I am working on is also maple and a shadow of the old handles is seen just like your video. I'm very excited to try your method. Do I use straight bleach or is there a ratio to follow?? Please and thank you.
A gorgeous result! People don't realize how much work goes into restoring old furniture, but videos like this definitely help. And you aren't kidding about using that particular brand of bleach in a well-ventilated area. I bleach-dyed some shirt graphics with just a small spray bottle indoors and nearly asphyxiated myself. Those are SERIOUS fumes.
Awesome project
You're a creative and talented chick!
What stripper did you use that peeled the stain off so easily?
That turned out very nice.
Came out really nice 👍
Thank you , very informative.
VERY helpful!! Thank you!!
Excelente trabalho 👏💯
It was a lot of work what about a bleach kit ? I love the way the piece came out , where did you get the hardware ?
Best video!! ❤❤❤❤
i'd love to see the video, but don't see the link, can you let me know.. thanks.. gorgeous piece!!
Nice one
Thanks for posting
Wanting to get mahogany stain out of English oak doors
Cheers a Brit
What did you seal it with? Thank you!
Can you bleach veneer furniture? Is this desk solid timber? Great results 👍
So informative, thank you! I find oak a problem with black areas - stain?
I've only bleached a couple things - none of them have been oak so far so I'm not 100% sure.
Very helpful thanks.
what color paint did you use on the inside,, it's so pretty.
Beautiful, excellent video! Would you mind sharing the name of the blue paint you used. It's a great color and I hope it's not a custom color.
I watch a gent called Tomas Johnson - furniture restoration, he is always bleaching wood that has bad water stains or ink on it, give him a watch I am sure you would love it and I find something new out of every episode.
I think Thomas Johnson used acilic acid
Oxalic acid.
Wonder if it works on cat pee on oak floors.
I've done this in the past, I got some wood had annoying red after stripping and sanding experimenting I sprayed it with hydrogen peroxide the 3% one it did surprisingly good bleaching
what brand type of sealer did you use?
Turned out great!
Upon unboxing, I was immediately upset at how the rails were very noticeably bent. But I kept going, all tools needed to assemble were included ruclips.net/user/postUgkxqtX4Dxs6aecAZEuz6GY5-d81YecKCshn and I had it set up in about 30 minutes. Honestly I love this thing, make sure to read the measurements and measure your space so you know if it'll work for you. I bought this to put inside my closet, underneath where I hang my clothes and it is absolutely perfect! It is VERY sturdy and all drawers glide easily and mine are stuffed, and they are still flush when closed.
What product did you use to seal it at the end?
Beautiful job! What was that you sprayed and scraped off existing stain with?
Yes!!! I would love to know. Looks like a miracle stripper!!
What’s the name/brand of the blue Mediterranean paint you used? It looks great -thx!
Hi, What did you use to seal the natural wood?
A matte polyurethane works great
Did I miss what your applying there? Is it straight bleach or is it mixed with water and if so what’s the ratio?
Very Nice
Hi I know this was posted 2 years ago but I really love that blue inside! Any way you remember the paint color?
Can I do the same procedure on the kitchen cabinets?
How long do you have to wait after using vinager to apply your polyurethane?
did you dilute the bleach with water?
Thanks for the tutorial, I've stripped and stained and re painted furniture many times, but never tried to bleach, gonna try this on some gold oak soon, see if it can help make it look a tiny bit updated
Hey, did you try bleaching that oak? What was the result? I have some oak to finish, but its too dark/yellow.
Thank you 💞
Please tell what stripper you used? It looks amazing! And also your sanding machine please. Do you recommend it? Thanks!
It's a random orbital sander. You can watch the video I uploaded right before this one of the entire hutch makeover to get more details about stripping. The stripper I used is Ready Strip.
what seal did you use for the natural look? thanks!!
Hi there. Pure bleach or did you dilute it?
Very helpful
awesome tutorial. thank you. i'm wondering how long all the sanding took.
A long time! I think 6-8 hours
nice tutorial
is it straight bleach ? or 1/2 bleach and 1/2 water?
Please wear a respirator when you sand. I'm not sure if you're doing this to get a shot with your face exposed for branding, but that fine dust is so bad for your lungs and you don't want to deal with the effects down the road. Amazing job on the hutch and thanks for showing the process.
Oh be quiet, abe
@@dpennisi22 you've obviously never done any amount of sanding or you'd take it seriously. You'd also never say that in person because you are a weakling at heart, which is why you don't care enough to help a person when they're making poor choices.
Hi what stain do you use after bleached to protect the furniture? thank you
Can I ask the sealant you prefer to use to keep the wood as natural as possible?
Every finished furniture for many years, I prefer the deft brand, Over the polyacrylic franche was using. It's more durable, and never yellows. However the cure time is definitely longer, in you have to do multiple Coats, so it's a little more work, Also it's not water based, so just like the bleach your going to want to make sure your working space is very well ventilated
What did you seal it with? And just curious as to why you decided to do household bleach rather than the A/B bleach?
Dust respirators when sanding are a good idea .... even outside
What was bleach solution? Thanks!
Which sealant are you using?
AS others have asked, what type of sealer did you use please?
Can you bleach it multiple times if it doesn’t all come off the first time?
Great job!
Dude this so awesome best diy channel ever!
How many coats of bleach did you use?
Just added you on Instagram - loved your last video - so much work - what a great result!
Thanks!
@@WelcometotheWoodsBlog several people have asked in the comments what sealer you prefer to top coat that doesn't change the wood tone. I would like to know also.

Which bleach did you use?
What type of sealer do you use, so the wood doesn’t yellow? We have a natural/unfinished butcher block counter in our pantry that needs a sealer and Im worried anything I seal it with will turn it yellow. Thanks 😊
I'd recommend polycrylic. I haven't had trouble with it yellowing overtime. Polyurethane often has that problem.
Bleach and vinegar?
How long did this take start to finish?
Help! I sanded to the wood! Bleached several times to get the color desired! Then I sanded again. Then applied a white wash! Lightly sanded and when I put on my water polyurethane there was bleeding! Was this because I did not use the vinegar to neutralize?
Thank you.. now I know 😁
I need to do this to all my kitchen cabinets. I only have a fee windows - will I be ok with bleaching the parts I cannot remove from the kitchen? Also did you wear masks? If so, which ones?
I'm trying to lighten bamboo blinds... I can't sand them... wondering what I should do.. any thoughts on something you can't sand first?
