Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married June 2013 and quickly caught the travel bug! We started “travel hacking” and taking more trips together and finally decided we wanted to travel for one year. After 2 years of saving $ and travel hacking over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016. We started this RUclips channel to share our experiences with friends and family, then decided we really liked vlogging and traveling. So we extended our 1 year trip to THREE years :) Now we have a goal of traveling to 100 countries before 2020! We are incredibly thankful to do something we love every day. :)

Rain in Vancouver. About 150 kms east, starting in the town of Hope, the Hwy begins climbing and you have your choice of 3 different routes north and/or east through 3 different mountain passes. Therefore rain at the coast equals snow in the mountains. Most of October was dry, so snow in the mountains was either none or minimal.

"If it's gonna be this cold, it needs to be snowing." I mean you just can't argue with that logic. I'm actually kinda sorta maybe thinking of working in Banff this winter. I worked in Jasper and that's how I paid for a lot of my travels years ago (born in Vancouver so I'm a dual).

I live in Michigan. The worst thing you can do is pull off to the side of the road during a fresh snow storm and get out....especially just to play. Cars and trucks slip and accidentally hit cars on the side of the road and will kill people that are out of their car even if they are quickly changing a tire. NEVER get out of your car if you don't have to.

Kara and Nate: I live in vancouver and am avid camper. I have had many rvs. The broken awning is why most rental agencies do not to rent rvs with awnings. They are about $1500 to replace. You have to be very careful to close them up in wind or heavy rain. Also the law requires thay you have winter tires April to Oct on the Coquhalla hwy. Did your rental company supply winter tires or at least advise you you needed them?

As you discovered we also suffer the perpetually highest gas prices in the country, which is even worse when filling a large vehicle. Woot! Woot! I'm Vancouverite - transplanted in the Gulf Coast of MS and have been watching you two from the early days...to see you in my stomping grounds - aaahmazing! Enjoy Canada!!! Get some Tim bits and coffee for your drive, and enjoy some wine in Kelowna...and Banff - I hope the weather participates - it is absolutely beautiful there...
My goal is to hit 40 countries - I'm half-way there at 20! You both inspire me so much : )

I grew up with lake effect snow during the winters. I'm a happy Southerner now. It's fun to watch you all enjoy it, though!
I've wanted to get a small RV one day and your vlog makes me want one even more!

I am ridiculously pumped to see you on roads I've been on a million times! Sorry about the early snow -- that usually only happens in the mountains, but it was all over the west this September. You are such good sports, though!

Already, van life seems very different from backpacking nomad life. lol It seems easier because you have everything and you don't need to carry it, but everything is dirty and takes a bit more effort. But, they are both pretty awesome. Safe travels everyone.

Remember that, although it's September, you're at some serious altitude, I'm assuming, which makes it seriously cold, potentially.
Also, regarding the gas, did you remember to convert to Canadian dollars, and from liters to gallons?
Isn't this part of Canada beautiful? I drove through here is June of '84 on my way back to northern IL from a solo drive to Alaska--9,244 miles in 31 days.

Hey Kara and Nate! Please donat any throwaway clothes next time you’re in canada ! So many folks in need would make really great use of your temp Walmart boots lolol. Just saying ! There are drop off bins in several parking lots across Canada! Cheers, I love all your content! Sending good vibes from Winnipeg!!! Hope you come visit sometime!! 😎 💪

I think this was towards the end of September? I was just coming back from Europe myself...Oktoberfest, and came home to pouring rain. Our weather is usually good in the summer. This year we had a lot of sunshine actually, but in mid-late September through to about May we tend to get a lot of rain lol. Vancouver does't get much snow, but the Coquihalla highway will get its share of snow. Right now I think you would need snow tires so September was a good time to head that way. Kelowna is a beautiful place (and yes, wine country, though I'm not sure how the weather was there once you got there). Glad y'all had fun in the snow :)

It used to snow when I was at Fort Campbell, did the Army just ship the snow in for training purposes?
Makes sense if they did, the army sucks like that.
And a bit of advice from someone who never give advice:
The dismantling things that don't work is not a sound engineering principal. Why didn't you guys ask the smart lady who "fixed the door?"

I'm kinda late but, lived in a RV a while (parked, about a year) & a neighbor told me right away to ALWAYS put in my awning if I left for more than an hour. If I was home & raining, etc. Lol? Not! Had a couple troubles. And I had a 'good' awning setup. Anywho... stay safe kids!

I get Walmart in rural areas....but Walmart is a blight on America/Canada! They run small businesses into the ground and create vacuums in communities. I was in a Walmart once (didn't buy anything) and I'll never go again. I support brick and mortar (small businesses)......I hope everyone will reconsider and to the same. Sometimes it takes a bit more effort....but its worth it!

And nobody warned you about the Connector? You can encounter snowstorms in that pass ten months out of the year, between November-March you're tempting fate by passing through with anything less than an SUV (or even a truck), and it comes out of absolute nowhere. There's a TV show called Highway Thru Hell that focuses on a towing company operating on the Coquihalla highway south of Merritt, if the 'ten months of snow' thing didn't demonstrate just how rough that highway can.
It's a beautiful drive in the summer, though.
