I remember discharging nicads with car light bulb soldered up to a Tamiya connector. Those were 1200mah batteries, Lucky to get 5 or 10 minutes run Time with a buggy back then. A little longer with the 8.4V in the bigwig. I still use a NIMH battery in my Tamiya semi trucks.
Bring back Radio Shack/Tandy RC cars I say.... 8 AA Ni-Cads in the car, 4 in the Controller, 14 hour charge time and a charger that could charge 4 batteries at a time. Topped off with a run time of 20 minutes if you were lucky. Eeeee, we were dedicated back in my day, I tell thee! 😂
I used to race in the mid 1980's. 6 cell 1200mah NiCads. Charge from a car battery via a resister in around 15 minutes, while watching a digital voltmeter for the voltage to peak and then as soon as it dropped off, remove it from charge quick. They were good times, and I have good memories of it, but It's sooooo much easier and so much better today! I don't wish for the old times again, but I remember them with fondness.
When I was a kid (80s} a guy at the airfield let me fly his nicad powered aircraft... Everybody thought he was loony back then for using batteries. The 90s I had thousands of dollars of nitro cars, trucks, airplanes, while stationed in Japan. Now, I won't touch a tiny engine with a 10ft pole. 😂
When I got into RC I was using a NiMh 7.2 Onyx pack and I thought it couldn't get any better. Then I bought an HPI Blitz and a Castle SCT brushless system and a Turnigy Lipo. OMG lol. Ridiculousness
Back in my day, we had to pull start the battery to have any fun. And when we finally got the thing going, we just watched it go in circles tethered to a string! I will never forget the frustration of the early glow plug cars. Bdddd. Bddddd. Bddddd. Bdddddd. Bdddddd. Okay, I give up.
I remember soldering sub-C batteries. You had to spend time matching batteries, cycling, etc... The races were 4 minutes long. I do miss those days. Anyone remember Novac?
Kong Power was the best I've used, true C rating, charged them sometimes at 3C (smaller 2,200mAh packs) and one pack I did close to 1000 cycles and it still had about 85% capacity. Always tested them on my Mr. C Mugen MBX5T truggy and when I stopped enjoying this amazing hobby, I did what Kong Power asked me to do and that is puncture the packs to see if they would combust and they didn't. Every other pack from different brands I had would burn in a spectacular fashion. I did save 1 5,000mAh pack though and when it was at 0.00v I slowly charged it back again to around 4,850mAh since that pack had over 500 cycles it kind of surprised me it even took the charge, didn't puff at all and when I put a nail through it, no fire but since it was charged the nail was red hot. The cell manufacturer closed after I think it was acquired by another company.
I'm commenting on your newest video hoping u see this dude. Would love to see a project where you can use solar panels or a solar power bank to charge an ebike like the dyu or something. Thought if something like that was possible makes charging cheaper in the long run even tho it would take ages. But could also mean you could potentially go further distances or not worry if you run out of charge away from home. You look like the guy who can make this real seriously hope u see this
I run the Zee 1500mah 3s or 4s graphene lipo packs in my crawlers and they last me over a hour crawling a course and only be at storage level 3.8v. 4 of them last me the full 5 hours at the club I run. And normally don't have to charge packs at all to put them at storage level. Sometimes have to discharge 1 cus I never use it. Love the newer lipos.
The first Lipos didn't even have balance leads. lol What a time that was! Hahaha! I'd hate to see how badly everyone would freak out if we had to switch back to NiCd and do all of the proper maintenance and charging again. It's so easy nowadays. Now, get off my lawn!!! 🤣
Leaps and bounds, since the old "run for 15 min, charge for 4 hours." Electronics have paved the way to a whole new rc galaxy. "One small step for man....
For the life of me I'm trying to remember the name of the battery company it was a later tan battery but it was a humpback battery back from the Tamiya hornet I wish I could remember the name of the battery I've even Googled it and I can't seem to find it LOL those were the days I totally forgot about the memory cycle I sure as hell don't miss that
Nicad packs could only last a few hours after charging. I charge my lipos days in advance. Plus a “good” nimh was 100$+. These Amazon 20$ lipos are great
This is a great chat John! I remember lipos and brushless coming into the scene in 1/10 EP racing days, both of which were forbidden lol. The one issue with Lipos is that it is becoming increasingly difficult to properly dispose of them. A major battery chain in australia recently stopped accepting them as part of their recycling program (for obvious reasons) and other e-waste services charge for the privelege. There are lots of dangerous old wives tales dealing with the topic, including that they are safe for landfill once discharged down to 0 volts. It would be nice if the supply chain that profits from their distribution and sale played more of a role in their safe disposal. I also worry about hobbyists being tarred with the same brush given heightened media interest in lithium fires, which are becoming more common due to e-bikes/scooters/EVs.
yep problem was the thunder power balance lead was crap and failed to the point you couldn't get them . but thunder power was no where near the first lipo. maybe in the usa but remember thunder power made nothing all rebranded . i have some 4s lipo's that still work from china via 1998. problem is no name brand. but at that time there were only 2 lipo producers
@@HolmesHobbies yep , i have some blue 4s i still use , no name on them but a sticker that has each cell voltage when made perfectly matched. back when i purchased super cheap stuff from a guy named rocky in china. lol he got into mold making for edf's later on. we still chat . just took a 25 yr old nikko walmart boat and put in old school GP brushless motor etc litttle boat rips in the pool . use to run off 6 AA brushed. and use those packs. GP ammo inrunner circa 2003??
Oddly enough just before watchkng this video I said good bye to the first LiPo battery I ever bought. 12 years.... probably charged it 5000 times (yes probably an exaggeration but not that much 😂). It got noticeably hot for the first time ever in my 6.5kg of 6th scale Willys. Oddly it is not swollen but is now not giving enough amperage out to do a full torque situation. Sooooo before it catches fire it has been retired🎉

Love Lipos! Their power for how much they weight is great too! Thanks John!
You bet
Gens Ace are my favorite lipo battery brand.
Same. Everything I have is gens ace/tattu

As per usual sir, you are a wealth of information.
Thank you kindly

Good stuff John, many thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it
Imagine how good HH batteries would be…❤
I still have 2 nylint crawlers, the jeep and the scorpion. Always had to upgrade the drive bands in the axles to a good o-ring so they didn't slip.😅

awe yeah!
I was just watching a video of our cousin steve. He’s so talented. I suggest everyone google him
Liked the Venom batteries with the changeable plugs,deans,xt60s and taymia plugs I think?

I miss matching and building batteries. I remember buying the bulk pack by Epic. I think it was a sub company of Trinity.
I did a 4 mile trail run on a single 3000mah 3s with power to spare, and that is on a Crawlmaster Pro 13t.

who doesn't!
Had an astro flight lithium charger for those thunder power batteries

great time to be alive!
I just wish manufacturers would give honest c ratings...
yep!
@HolmesHobbies at least traxxas gives out numbers that are in the right ball park.... some are well over 100c now!!!!

sometimes it's tough for me to admit when a trusty lipo is ready to leave us
What's your take on new emerging battery technology? Maybe worth a video?
great idea
2/3a cells lol.
They were actually fantastic for crawlers. I think they hit 1800mah before lipo took over
