- On, OoruLabs, India's premier urban issues podcast,
We discuss the water crisis in Bangalore with Vishwanath Srikantaiah aka @zenrainman and explore the severity of the issue.
Bengaluru is facing an unprecedented water scarcity crisis, with many tanker services stopping due to a lack of water at the source. The city's water supply is heavily reliant on energy-inefficient pumping from the Cauvery River and underground sources. Vishwanath Shekhandaya, also known as Zen Rain Man, discusses the severity of the crisis and the need for long-term solutions. The interview highlights the challenges of coordinating multiple agencies and the importance of integrated urban water management. The conversation also emphasizes the role of water tankers as a short-term solution and the potential for increasing competition in the sector. It is crucial to address the supply gap and invest in infrastructure, such as connecting wastewater treatment plants to surface water bodies. The discussion raises concerns about the lack of political support and the negative impact on the brand image of Bengaluru. However, there is enough water available from various sources, including rainwater, groundwater, and treated wastewater, if managed efficiently. The conversation concludes by emphasizing the need for citizen action, including water literacy, responsible construction practices, and paying the true economic cost of water.

I also beleive that white topping of Bengaluru roads had resulted in very low/reduced water absorption to the ground and thus resulting in very less ground water resource..
I have never heard of this scenario in Bangalore in the past, being lived in the city for past 40 years. So wondering has the white topping contributed. White topping also doesn't enable to plant any trees road side easily as the soil is covered by concrete and hard to dig.
So new trees,, no water absorption to the ground.
Government should seriously have geo experts who can help the city the revive. We need to heal our city ❤
It is problem bcos of population, public from all states, countries settled in banglore, industries and misusing of water , it is not white topping on roads
CURRUPTION built over 36o GOD GIVEN LAKE JUST DOWN TO 6O NO WATER CAN SEEP THROUGH to become good drinking , TEARE DOWN HOUSEE ILLEGAL encroachment, YOU AINT SEE NOTHING YET, MORE TROUBLES BECAUSE OF CRUPPUTION
Prestige tech forest is coming on Varthur lake bed .. any comments on that ...
Varthur lake itself was frothing and a gone case. Now that is also being exploited?
@@thiruvettiprestige is the biggest villain
The only comment is what us tye cost ? East Bangalore is taken for granted.
Fuc prestige group
Another 70+ acres of project is coming near kadugodi. It's not on a lake bed, but per sft water usage just goes up with such huge residential areas. And overall why cant govt just restrict to 5 floors apartments instead of huge storied buildings. And Secondly build another IT hub. After all it's about development and can be done in another place as well. Diverse development can help in not getting into such situation.
I live in Kasturinagar, which has Cauvery water supply. We get water 2 times a week. On the paper, Cauvery supply is there, but the actual amount we got last month (Feb) was just 8000 liter! We are 5 people and it's almost a week's consumption. We are dependent on tankers. So, I strongly think the Cauvery water supply data needs to be made public. We should be able to see which area gets how much of water. This would eliminate the 'water-mafia' that's running in the dark!
You are right, transparency of piped water release at the home level is non-existent. In this age of technology its appalling that we are not doing this. Human intervention by valve man can easily be rigged. I do agree with @zenrainman that we have to move from all water for some to some water for all.
@@oorulabs Also, there is a large chunk of people who uses suction pumps on the supply pipes, it results in the low pressure/ less water for others who doesn't break the law. Unfortunately, there is no system to detect this!
@@sagarhasanadka1211 Yes True. BWSSB already has the data when they generate the Bills they will get this data. Street wise they can release the water consumption data so that people will come to know about the water consumption pattern of other neighbours.
Is itvpossible to file an RTI so that we get this data?
Sorry CORUPPTION CORUPT CORRUPTION congress not good and all governments
Some are doing start up companies like digging borewells inside homes and company. Trading in water tanks. Now water exhausted.
Given the water stress, challenging and learning to live on less that the 135 lpd has to be part of the solution as well.
For the piped millions, the valve man holds the key. Literally. He hasn't been seen around my street, Im sure he has been favouring some other ones for extra opening times. 19th century technology.
My consumption pattern is
Bath 10 ltr , Toilet flushing for whole day 50 ltr, Cloths washing 15 ltr( per person), other cleaning purpose 15 ltrs, Cooking 10 ltr, Drinking 15 ltr.
I feel that with this much water people can leave comfortably.
If we try to reuse the used water from washing machine, dishwasher for the flushing, we can bring the water usage to less than 100 lpd.
Placing individual water meter in apartments is one suggestion feel can stop a lot of wastage. Also car washing with water from taps wasting gallons of water must be checked in apartments and communities. Rationing water to each family on number of people. Based on per capita water consumption is to be followed
Absolutely.. white topping without even an inch of rain water to seep in.. pathetic execution from the Road layers and 0 accountability from the Bbmp in terms of review and planning
@@Sksksk851 well said 👌
They can bring in more than what is needed just get 3 tanker trains assigned to Bangalore to supply water. and make the on road tankers to take water from here and supply across the city.
Hello Sir,
I have a doubt and expect an answer from experts like you.
I will be grateful for the same.
Can we recharge borewell directly with Treated Gray water (To be more clear, gray water is treated through Oil Trap -then through series of gravels 40, 20, 10 mm, then through activated charcoal and then through Sand).
So, after treating through above steps, now is this can be allowed to recharge bore well directly.
A separate perforated Injection borewell is not there. and there is no chance to build also.
So, I wanted to know from you, that can I recharge my borewell?
We are pursuing Distraction life in every day due to biological problems around the 🌎🎄.Prodigiously scarcity of water in Bangalore around due to ground water running out and it will leads to neighbouring state also very soon.Squarely we are going to face Catastrophic 🙏🇮🇳.
That's a full take....but increased water demand from Bangalore....will it affect lower riparian cities and ruralities like. Mysore mandya etc??
Mysore and Mandya are upstream of Bengalurus intake point which is the last on the Kaveri in Karnataka That will not be affected.
Its grate to see someone so intellectual comprehend the problem, solving the math behind it and proposing definitive solutions. Unfortunately the govt bodies incharge are utter dimwits
Highlights is protect and fill lakes with treated water to fill ground water.. big question is "Who should do it..?" Will they do it ..?? As it don't have biz model nor makes any profit... instead drying them is more profitable...
Excellent talk. How much has BWSSB reduced the "unaccounted for losses" (euphemism for theft) from it's once ~50% level ? 🤔
It is down to 27 % and is likely to come down to 21 % in the next leak reduction investment. It is not all theft , a lot of it is physical loss due to old pipes and leaking reservoirs.
Cheaper to condense water out of the air than tankers?
It will cost you ₹16 to condense a liter of water in Bengaluru assuming there is enough humidity in the air. Whereas it costs you ₹6 in a tanker with surge pricing.
@@oorulabs Thank you for this information, couldn't find it anywhere (at least not readily).
1.. White topping of roads have
resulted in less water percolation to ground during rain.
2. Drains have been concretized resulting in floods during monsoon and no water percolation to ground. 3. Lakes have been encroached and built concrete structures.
4. Trees have been cut.
5. Improper water harvesting in all apartments.
6. People use fresh water to clean the roads near their homes and cars. With such mindset of citizens and no vision for sustainability Bangalore is doomed and is bound to become Cape Town in next 2-3 years.
Actually you are right.. And 😅 half of India is in Bengaluru too much people came in our city after lockdown 😢😢 aren't there another tier 2 cities for job why everyone coming to Bengaluru only 😅
Most of the individual homes don't have rain water harvesting system.
So MLD is an annual average unit?
Million litres per day
Why rain water harvesting is not mandatory in Bangalore?
It is mandatory, just not enforced.
It has been mandatory for new construction for more than a decade but the old houses don't have it as wasn't planned.
There must be other novel ways for retrofitting houses that don't have rain water harvesting.
Like nothing substantial was done for the flooding....after the sufferings of the common people, we will all forget this until next year March
Very right, vs
White topping all of B'lore without even an inch of rain water to seep in.. n also increasing the temperature of the city.. pathetic execution from the Road layers and 0 accountability from the Bbmp in terms of review and planning
Mekedatu dam and bangalore metro is more important than anything else in bangalore.
Maybe you missed listening to the podcast. We already have the water. Mekedatu can destroy the entire Cauvery wildlife sanctuary and submerge over 50 sq km of forests.
@@oorulabs
Maybe you have not analysed the pros and cons of building a dam.
You didn't give importance for the mekedatu project.
On a long run it is certainly beneficial.
Mekedatu will solve the bangalore water crises and well developed metro will solve the traffic.
There is no 2 way about it.
China has built a dam called 3 gorges dam which is one of the largest dam in the world.
The central government should build a bigger dam to claim the title from china.
Too much as federalism isn't good.
நீ கட்டு...அப்புறம் தான் உனக்கு உண்மையான தண்ணி கஷ்டம்னா என்னன்னு உனக்கு தெரியும்...கட்டு...கட்டு....
Why don’t we talk about desalinization plants, which barren gulf countries use extensively? Which is the nearest sea front to Bengaluru?
359 km away and 920 metres below us.
Thanks. But even our coastal areas dont get desalinated water@@zenrainman
@@mohitonutube We were talking about Bengaluru here :) Chennai is setting up quite large ones.
@@zenrainman, some have said we should have desalination plants in Mangalore to help Bangalore.
They obviously have not heard of the KC Valley Project.
What's TLDR
TLDR is that there is actually enough overall supply of water from various sources vs. the demand for water and its primarily a mismanagement issue rather than a basic resource shortage.
WWENAD2D
Mekedatu dam has to be built what's your opinion..
Why should it be built?
@@oorulabs that is the reason I'm asking if the Dam helps store water during monsoon that will help Bangalore to fulfill its water requirements..
Watch the math at 08:38 and decide where one should put the efforts.
Cauvery is over exploited. The government needs to have a massive watershed program and revive Dakshina Pinakini and Vrishabhavati.
Why not connect flooding rivers of neighboring states like Godavari or Krishna into dams and lakes of dry areas like B'lore and surroundings
If they can connect states with roads then why not water ways
The point of the podcast is to stop understanding river and begin to understand water.
@@oorulabs You should make a video on how to use water economically.
I'm afraid and it's a possibility your apartment is built on a lake😢
Why govt cannot regulate the builders. If they can regulate language and signage language. What happened to the flood water in the last 3 years every year there was flood due to heavy rains in bangalore. Govt cannot regulate builders as they themselves are and then demolish houses of poor in the name of lake bed 😂.
What was and is the govt doing when there are flats and societies being built and are being built in a small piece of land without stp and cauvery water.
As per him the only responsibility is of citizens and not builders govt and machinery. What are the politicians and so called BBMP and others doing while granting approval to these so called big societies of 2000 flats. Again the same old method of diverting and just gaining popularity that its citizens who have to do things and ot the agencies and govt 😂😂😂
If you are famous why you don't ask govt all these and just come here and talk
Ban all swimming pools in Bengaluru
600 sqft they drill bore
Can we trust Government running tankers ? There will be corruption or politically motivated (in garb of Socialism) distribution.
I like the idea of filling water bodies of treated / recycled water.
App is hanging alot.
Absurd comment
Cauvery water is being completely used as if its their right to use in city centre, where as even for drinking Cauvery is not there in the outskirts
This is highly biased situation
What was this expert doing before the crisis erupted ?
Helping people who want to help themselves.
Singing songs like Kumar Sanu :)
Instead of asking the expert, what did you and your voted corruptomaniac government do, instead of implementing strict rain water harvesting and deepening lakes for recharging the ground waters. Just a year of below monsoon shows how intellectual you people are..
Only thing you are good at is,.crying northies spoiled the city and driving with zero road discipline.
Now cry and run to your mother or bark at me..start now
We've many activists but fewer workers😅
Experts have studied the situation, they know what is wrong and how to improve the situation. But people in power need to listen to them. If they can't listen, what can the expert do?
Bengaluru....worst modern city in the world!! Worst traffic, highly corrupt, poor public transport infrastructure...glad I dont live there anymore!!!
Ever since siddaramullah became the CM there has been no rainfall in Bangalore itself as all his attention has been on how to benefit only one section of community. This fellow has still not offered bhagini at cauvery due to his hatred of Hindu rituals so there has been no rainfall even in the cauvery basin. When bommai was the cm we were flooded with water and all the Congress walas protesting then were swimming in bellandur freely now but with this unlucky fellow now their has been no rain itself so wonder if they are going to swim out of it or get drowned from it this time 😂😂😂
Kick him out of power then
We have been getting drought at the end of 5 years of NDA rule in Center. Immediate punishment by rain gods for misdeeds of NDA government. Witnessed drought in 2004 , 2019 and now in 2024. Never elect NDA again.
Listening to this it looks like citizens are to be blamed for this debacle as well.LOL.what a waste of time hearing this illogical monologue
Citizens should be blamed. They are the reason.
this man is speaking worse than a conman man . All he speaking is dreams not realities
