PENNY DREAFUL - I AM - JOHN CLARE

I am one of the best poems of John Clare, was composed during a critical period in the life of the author, at that time, interned in an asylum.
The title of this great poem by John Clare, I am, reflects with bitter irony the tremendous internal struggle to find its own individuality, its own being; since the reason for the imprisonment was related to a series of hallucinations about his personality.
I am, which belongs to John Clare's cycle of insane poems, manifests the terrible emotional tensions of the poet, who feels excluded and discriminated against due to his mental illness. Throughout these verses, he tries to reconnect with himself, with his I, with his being, independently of what others create, and then sink into the sweet oblivion of death.
