  • Retired British Army General Sir Richard Shirreff says NATO may eventually need to conduct operations against Russia if the war in Ukraine dragged on and became “a running sore” in Eastern Europe. The former Deputy Supreme Allied Commander, Europe, also told DW that Western self-deterrence had prolonged the war and that the best way to end the Kremlin’s nuclear saber-rattling was to build a credible conventional defense in NATO.

Wouldn't surprise me. No one is even talking about what happens after the conventional war ends. Considering the war crimes committed against the Ukrainians I wouldn't be surprised if it slips into a insurgency, which is still supplied by the west for years after. Considering how Russia and Ukraine a so culturally close it could be a nightmare for the Russians with that huge border. You think the Russians would of learnt a lesson about attacking civilian populations after Afghan 1979-89.

"High-intensity combat" refers to warfare characterized by intense, large-scale, and sustained military operations involving significant firepower, resources, and manpower. This type of combat often occurs in conventional conflicts between nation-states or in situations where the level of violence and engagement is particularly severe. Key characteristics of high-intensity combat include:
      1. **Large-Scale Operations:** High-intensity combat typically involves the deployment of substantial military forces, including infantry, armored units, artillery, air support, and naval assets.
      2. **Protracted Duration:** These conflicts can last for an extended period, often involving prolonged battles, campaigns, or even entire wars.
      3. **Sophisticated Weaponry:** High-intensity combat frequently features the use of advanced and sophisticated weaponry, including tanks, fighter jets, naval vessels, and precision-guided munitions.
      4. **Complex Logistics:** The logistics of supporting large forces engaged in high-intensity combat are intricate, involving supply lines, resupply operations, and transportation of troops and equipment.
      5. **Strategic Objectives:** These conflicts often revolve around critical strategic objectives, such as control of territory, resources, or the achievement of specific military or political goals.
      6. **High Casualties:** Due to the intensity of the fighting and the involvement of advanced weaponry, high-intensity combat can result in significant casualties on both sides.
Examples of high-intensity conflicts include World War I, World War II, and the Gulf War in 1990-1991. In contrast, "low-intensity conflict" or "asymmetric warfare" refers to conflicts that involve less conventional military force and may include guerrilla warfare, insurgency, or counterinsurgency operations.

This video ought to be compulsory reading for all European politicians and particularly the French, German, Italian and British, the larger European countries. Together they drive policy in the EU and change attitudes by their action or lack of such. Most of them right now think that the status quo post war can be like the status quo ante, which of course is a huge mistake and unrealistic. Russia, if it is allowed to keep the Ukrainian occupied lands, will then attack the Baltic states. Fortunately, Poland is investing enough into defence to probably stop the Russians from trying and Finland already is strong, but the Baltic nations have good reason to feel insecure, if we go on letting Macron, Scholz and some other leaders think that their relationship with Russia will be as before, once the war in Ukraine has been ended. Good for you Sir Richard, for speaking out in no uncertain terms. We need more leaders like you.

Putin's view of the West is that democracy makes them weak-willed and easy to manipulate, and the West has been proving him right more often than not, by hesitating or backing down every time he puffs up his chest, blusters and threatens, when in fact, like any bully, the only language he understands is the exact opposite: a united show of force and readiness that would make _him_ look weak and threaten his hold on power.

We can afford to be cautious. I served in FRG ‘83-‘84; 4 REFORGERs including a deployment from the US. I served at the eighth infantry division headquarters and took part in Corps level battlefield reporting wargames. My branch was air defense and the problem back then was the Warsaw Pact nations had more aircraft than we had, AA missiles. This is no longer the case. We have thousands and thousands of Tomahawk and and other cruise missiles. We have SEAD capabilities, drones, ground-launched SBDs. Russia has no allies on the ground and a severely depleted military. Why the hand-wringing? We can utterly destroy Russia’s ability to conduct offensive military operations without setting one foot on Russian soil. So what card can Russia play but Nuclear Blackmail?
Because of this European NATO countries, not the US need to make the first response to any Russian provocation on a NATO country. They know they are utterly outmatched in any conventional exchange.

You are right. The countries from the west side of Europe except UK are naively believing that Russians will come the their senses and end this war by replacing Putin in power and business will be as usual. They are totally wrong. Europe has to fight a long battle not only to defeat Russia, but also to recover their influence in the world if they still want some access to markets and natural resources. China and Russia already started to take those places under their control in Asia, Africa and South America cutting access to resources for the free developed countries. It is not time for politician-ism and fragmented European decision caused by divergent economical interest around the world and the bad globalization understanding.

Russia's perspective is that they have to put their foot down some time or NATO expansion will continue all the way to Mongolia, by which point they would be totally ringed by NATO and it might not be possible to defend themselves. The best thing the individual members of NATO and prospective members can do now is to donate as many modern fighter jets as possible to Ukraine (F-16, JAS Gripen etc). Ukraine, for its part, should then look at the possibility of involving pilots from private military companies (PMC). The Russians did this with the Wagner Group so why shouldn't Ukraine do the same with pilots who are obviously the bottleneck when it comes to using Western fighter jets in Ukraine. Ukraine needs air superiority now!

Comparing Russia's strength to Irak or Afghanistan ist strange as this is an other scale and an other type of war. This war is very much WW1 , where trenches are pretty much static for many years, but many people died for virtually nothing. I agree with the assessment that it does not make sense to prolong the war. It also does not not make sense to build up more conflict between NATO and Russia. The fact is sinking in that NATO was too aggressively pushing for the Ukraine to enter the alliance. This was not acceptable for Russia. History justifies the phobia of having western countries trying to conquer the east. Get the conflict settled and use the resources for more important things.

NATO currently has $50,216,390,000,000 in nominal GDP, and if 25% of that is spent on the military, then the military expenditure would be $12,554,097,500,000 ($12.55 trillion). That amount is higher than the entire nominal economy of four continents: South America, Africa, Oceania, and Antarctica, all combined. There is more money in the military sector than on entire continents. Russia, along with some of its own allies, unfortunately doesn’t seem to have the luxury of an economy that is anywhere close to NATO's theoretical 25% military spending.
