My great grandmother did this in the 60’s 70’s and 80’s. All her kitchen rugs and placemats were old plastic bags. Poor people in Appalachia have been doing this forever.
Amazingly fantastic, we need more of this in this world! I’m always so aware about how much trash art makes, but to make your art OUT of trash!? Now that’s something fantastic...
Oh I do this. I have made a backpack, a bean bag chair, lacy table centers, a vase, a lot of purses, a wallet, and probably a few other things I can't remember. I have used plastic bags from bread, from those bubble thighs you get when shipping, newspaper bags are awesome to use, those bags from the mall that are a bit thicker, almost anything can be used if you cut it right and plan your piece to have thick or thin plarn. It takes me about a week to finish a purse start to finish, but I don't do it full time I do it when I have time which veries widely day to day. The longest part of the process for sure it's the making of the yarn. You can make it as shown or for lace or thin yarn you can spin it or for a woven look you can do a base stitch all the way through the yarn ball then use it to make something. They are amazing to clean, they last forever. The purses I make do stretch about a half inch to a full inch over time depending on the stitch but if you are concerned about that you can add a thin yarn which adds color and will keep it from stretching. Also I've had my bags in extreme heat as I live in a very hot climate and I haven't had anything happen to them, I'm not eating out of them so I'm not worried about plastic chemicals leaking also plastic bags are a thin mostly number 2 plastic anyway so they are the least likely to leak anything chemical wise. I hope that answered any questions you have.
This is similar to the reusing of Tyvek into bags and crudely woven decorative accessories. I knitted a market bag with plarn. Had to reinforce handles because they get stretched out a lot over time.
This has been done in South Africa for a number of years. My grandmother used plastics to make hats and mats.
My favorite is the kids that make soccer balls out of plastic bags!

My friends grandma used to do this & she gifted me a plastic bag purse.
If I actually had access to plastic bags (without obviously just buying them new), I'd be interested in trying this.

Plastic bag made out of... plastic bag.
But to me it looked like it had more structural integrity than a normal plastic bag but maybe not ….

OMG So amazing
I like the idea of crocheting with plastic, do you have a pattern for that hat, I want to make that exact hat
This is the future!😎
Asian moms watching this : 👁👄👁
Very nice
when your aunt crochets you a vest and expects you to wear it but its made from literal plastic bags 👀
Cool as hell. Send it to me!
I thought abt this some time ago I thought I was being revolutionary 😭😭 just to find out it was a thing already
Oh hey I do this the time :D
There was a big thing where people made plastic bags into sleeping bags/mats for the homeless by knotting them I think, this is very similar.
will this work for knitting too? i don't know how to crochet
Yes, and it can be woven. If you like a thinner yarn you can spin it first.
Yeah but wont that itch/ be see through as a top?
My mom made me a plarn fake wasp nest to keep wasps away
Crocheting a plastic bag into a differently shaped plastic bag...... ummm great work 🤣
I think I would make rugs. The clothes look really uncomfortable.
0:35imagine a bag made out of a......... Bag
My daughter laughs at me all the time, mom your bag is made of bags and you put a bag into your bag made of bags. Yes, the nesting doll of bags.
😃😲

It's hideous, though, and not very durable or breathable.
