As a woodturning beginner, I thought I'd document my attempt to make a chess set. In this episode, I make a rook. Also visit my site: blackforestsign...
Thank you Mr. Wegner. That's a pure joy to see a chunk of wood turning into something smooth and elegant like these chess figures. You're one of several woodworkers who force me to start working on wood myself. I'll have to start with dremel tools though. Got no space for all those cool and tricky woodturning and sanding and etc machines.
Lens Man Hi - Thanks for your comment! dremels are great tools with a lot of potential to make some really cool things. Please post what you do. I'm gonna subscribe. Thanks for watching!
James Wegner Oh, I will) If something worthy comes out, of course. By the way, what's the average price for that kind of ontable small lathe you use here? I've searched through some offers of our local market of used stuff in Moscow, Russia, and those of MC, JET JWL, DSL vary from approx. 1500 to 2000 USD according to todays rate... Not all of them used anyway... There's one quite simple but nice lookin' JET JWL-1443 for 850 USD new. Just iquiring the prices to sum up this beautiful hobby price. And also - do you do carving? Thank you
Stephen Ogle Thanks Stephen! I especially appreciate it from a turner whose work is as fabulous as yours (I've subscribed to you for a while)! Thanks for watching!
Great videos James. Might I suggest that you put an Episode # in the titles? It'd be nice to see a mention of "1 of 6" or something like that so we know which ones we've seen and which ones we need to look forward to watching next. Thanks again.
Hi James! Just a small QOL request from a viewer's perspective: When browsing through the different pieces it would be nice to have #s in the title of the video i.e. #1 The Pawns. I don't know why but it's cool to watch them in order of rank! Besides that the pieces so far look great and they definitely don't look like a rookie's work!
Strange how the rooks are the most powerful pieces on the board apart from the queens, and yet they're often the second-smallest. I'm surprised they aren't made third-tallest instead in more chess sets. Regardless, amazing job. Someday I might want to try a project like this, but I haven't touched a lathe since 8th grade!
Nice work im learning more and more but not ready to try yet. Alot of samples. I need to make or get a round wooden chess piece holder to reverse the piece like in video. Can we buy one? Or is there little blue print?
I'm not able to find all the parts for the chess set series. Can you please provide the links. I have not found part one or the last one where you show the weights. I've enjoyed what I have found.
james i have started my own set after watching your videos. i have all maple pawns down, working on the bishops now. ? for you. have you made the board yet, just courious. ibwill make mine after all peices are done. but still looking for a used planner
lovely looking set, how long have you been carving, did you work with wood before turning etc, thinking of getting a lathe myself but never tried anything like it before is it really hard to learn?
M Long Thanks M. I don't carve - lol. Just for this chess set I guess. Get the lathe - great fun, and RUclips videos teach you all you want to know. Thanks for watching!
A couple of years ago, I made some large wooden toy soldiers like the ones in Babes In Toyland, but my own design and painted to look like the palace guards. I sold them at a craft fair, but during the fair, a guy comes up to me and says, "I can make those", so I said, "that's fine, go make some". He came back a while later with his wife to show her my work, and then said he wanted to take some pictures and measurements of my soldiers for plans. I said NO WAY, he got mad and started to argue, which at the time I thought was odd. However, I stood my ground, and told him if he could really make them, then go home and make his own designs. He left unhappy. Which is why when I see someone's own design and work and people asking for measurements, I get this little twitch in my left eye and want to reach though the computer and throw something large and heavy at them.
No mater what they will never make it the same as yours. And even if they did it would have been so time consuming that they wouldn't do it again orrr a simple ,I'm sorry but no.. And a little (thank you for looking at what I made) can go a long way. Have a good day.
