I think after “RBB” and “Zimzalabim” polarized audiences, especially in Korea, “Umpah Umpah” was the safe choice for this comeback. You’re right though... it’s so standard, it’s almost experimental for RV. 😂
Actually I think it's a typical Red Velvet thing at this point. Looking back at their title tracks since debut there's always one fun, happy and catchy song (Happiness, Russian Roulette, Red Flavour, Power Up, Umpah Umpah), then there's one slow r'n'b song (Automatic, One of These Nights, Bad Boy), and after that one experimental (Rookie, RBB, Zimzalabim). I'm pretty sure the ReVe Festival: finale will have an r'n'b title track.
Galadriel of Lorien plus day 3/finale will likely be released in the fall/winter time which is usually when they release velvet title tracks (peekaboo, bad boy)

Russian Roulette, ICC, Power Up, Dumb Dumb for example have harmonic and modal changes that make them experimental in their own right. “Umpah Umpah” sounds like it could be a Snsd song.. it’s musically very safe and straightforward, even for a Red Title track. I def. think we’re getting a Velvet comeback with ‘Finale’ too.
Seriously, no ones does ad-libs and harmonies better than Red Velvet. Their songs don't always click for me, but you can bet they always have damn good ad-libs and harmonies and that's why they are queens

Imo in day 1 sunny side up and lp isnt a velvet concept i think the red overpowers the velvet concept in those two songs. So day 1 is purely Red concept but in day 2 it is from Red concept to Velvet concept Umpah2 going from Ladies Night and eyes hands locked. I think this is a much better transition if they are going to make day 3 velvet

I love how the mv, song lyrics and the choreo reference so many previous RV comebacks. It really is the ultimate 5th yr anniversary song, RV looking back on everything they have achieved until now. From having a rap verse consisting of Michael Jackson song titles to having a rap verse name dropping their own previous comebacks, Queen RV have come such a long way😭😭😭 Edit: Even the styling is so referential 😭
I think this was so conventional that it was actually incredibly refreshing, not just for Red Velvet, but for the current landscape of kpop in general right now. So many groups are going experimental, or hard and dark and what have you, that something like this just feels great for the ears and the mind. Easy 10/10 for me.

red velvet's summer concepts are always so unique; interviewing fruits, making juice, and now this. many groups r doing summer concepts w stuffs like pool n beach, but this offers a story of a summer holiday ruined by rain storm. rv is forced to stay inside n imagine themselves on the beach, n they finally accept that n make the most out of it. seriously, who ever come up w that story? no one. the whole rv creative team is really like no other. they always have the most unique concepts.
Umpah Umpah is literally one of the best Red Velvet songs(in my opinion), i love how they experiment with many sounds, instruments and vocals risking the final product/song such as Rookie & Zimzalabim but these simple, cute and summer-like songs win my heart too. I love the percussion and the beat here. I've heard two covers (by Mighty Rocksters and by You's Drum (Youkyung from AOA)) and they sounded great because of how good the drums are in the original. I guess almost in every Red Velvet song there's something special that I love.

I don't know why this song isn't as popular as past title tracks (internationally at least) is really good! I love Red Velvet, they're one of my top groups, and I kinda see what you mean with western productions, actually SM artists tends to be my favourite so I guess I like that type of production and I can't see it here, this is more towards a full K-pop feel and I love it too! Fun part of this song is that it brought alot of elements from their previous songs. That city set reminds me of that from 'dumb dumb' mv. In Yeri&Irene's rap part they mention their songs-자꾸만 '덤덤' 자꾸만 huh? 궁금해 이 '빠빨간만' yeah '행복'이란 가깝지 like 'Ice cream cake'. Not very well shown in the mv, but little parts of this song's choreography are from their previous songs. Even the obvious extention of Wendy resembles her hair style in the 빨간맛 era. Such a pleasant present for RV fans.
As is known to all，Red Velvet，they always use the brightest smile to shoot the scariest music video. if you have watched any parsing video about this MV you will know it has to do something with Stockholm syndrome. and there are always deep(scary) meannings in their mv which somehow reflect either the dark society or some dark events.... concept girl group Red Velvet lol
I loved this song and MV. In my opinion it feels like the most SM-esque song RV have ever released (a feeling I got earlier this year with NCT 127's Superhuman). I feel like all SM groups end up with at least one song/album that's just unflinchingly bright and energetic with interesting undertones in the production. The chorus especially, but the whole song in general, reminds me of the sound SHINee had on Misconceptions of of You. WenSulJoy's each taking a stab at that one high note reminded me of JongKeyTaeOnew's high notes in the last chorus of Everybody.
There's a lot of references to their previous videos. Them standing at the door at the end is a throwback to Peek-A-Boo, Irene says "Dumb Dumb" in the second verse, joy sings "Ice cream cake", Wendy's terrible ombre is a throwback to their ombre hair in Happiness and lighthouse is from "One of These Nights". There's probably more I missed, by yeah. Basically this entire Reveluv Festival is a celebration of their five year career. Zimzalabim also had a lot of references to their previous music videos. "Table unnie" is basically iconic at this point.

Fun part of this song is that it brought alot of elements from their previous songs. That city set reminds me of that from 'dumb dumb' mv. In Yeri&Irene's rap part they mention their songs-자꾸만 '덤덤' 자꾸만 huh? 궁금해 이 '빠빨간만' yeah '행복'이란 가깝지 like 'Ice cream cake'. Not very well shown in the mv, but little parts of this song's choreography are from their previous songs. Even the obvious extention of Wendy resembles her hair style in the 빨간맛 era. Such a pleasant present for RV fans.
As is known to all，Red Velvet，they always use the brightest smile to shoot the scariest music video. if you have watched any parsing video about this MV you will know it has to do something with Stockholm syndrome. and there are always deep(scary) meannings in their mv which somehow reflect either the dark society or some dark events.... concept girl group Red Velvet lol

I loved this song and MV. In my opinion it feels like the most SM-esque song RV have ever released (a feeling I got earlier this year with NCT 127's Superhuman). I feel like all SM groups end up with at least one song/album that's just unflinchingly bright and energetic with interesting undertones in the production. The chorus especially, but the whole song in general, reminds me of the sound SHINee had on Misconceptions of of You. WenSulJoy's each taking a stab at that one high note reminded me of JongKeyTaeOnew's high notes in the last chorus of Everybody.

There's a lot of references to their previous videos. Them standing at the door at the end is a throwback to Peek-A-Boo, Irene says "Dumb Dumb" in the second verse, joy sings "Ice cream cake", Wendy's terrible ombre is a throwback to their ombre hair in Happiness and lighthouse is from "One of These Nights". There's probably more I missed, by yeah. Basically this entire Reveluv Festival is a celebration of their five year career. Zimzalabim also had a lot of references to their previous music videos. "Table unnie" is basically iconic at this point.
