    Regina: *yes*

I love how she does little vocal acrobatics with the lyrics. It took a while for me to realize what she was saying with the lyric "You can't break that which isn't yours." She combines the the ch from "which" with the "isn't" and it sounds almost like chisel.
The allusions to the French and Bolshevik revolutions, the little snippets of Russian and French, the fun little plays with the singing, and the music... I love this song.

She says in Russian, from the poem "February":
"February, pick up your pen and weep,
Write poems about february in sobs and ink,
While thunder booming in the background
Is burning in the black of Spring"

it's a translation I won't approve :-) In particular "thunder booming" should rather be "muddy slush (loudly) splashing"...

At first I was confused by the weird noises she makes in this song, but the exact noises were the ones that made this song memorable for me. I still don't know why she does it, it reminds me of being in the ocean and getting water in your mouth and of the hiccups you get when you're drinking too much.

Lizzy Moon A lot of her songs have interpretive sound. In the song Hero, I think the vbrrr sound is meant to be like the airplane noise you make when feeding a child "Hey open wide! here comes, original sin 'vbrrr'".

      @therogerwilco 9 лет назад +18

Lizzy Moon Iirc I looked into the origin of this song and it was her way of replicating the Soviet Union feelings (it sounds like many of the old marches)

Her piano playing is amazing. Soft playing then hard then in-between. You can tell she' bleeding catharsis into the keys playing this. Oddly enough I discovered this beautiful song on a playlist for Boardwalk Empire.

This song was the turning point for me. Heard Fidelity on some late night show and thought 'hey, what a cool little song'. Looked her up not expecting a big thing. Yowza!! She's a Beatle. interesting. i heard a short bit of her doing "dont leave me" on jimmy kimmel? as i walked thru the living room as my brother was watching on TV. had never heard of her but was compelled the next day to find out who she was. looked up the show on youtube, found her. spent probably the next 3 days checking out her music. became an instant fan. she is so refreshing. fearless,UN-filtered, UN-fettered music. have not found one song of hers that i dont like.

The Russian verse is the first stanza from a poem by Boris Pasternak, February:
    February. Get ink, shed tears.
Write of it, sob your heart out, sing,
    While torrential slush that roars
Burns in the blackness of the spring.
Go hire a buggy. For six grivnas,
Race through the noice of bells and wheels
To where the ink and all you grieving
Are muffled when the rainshower falls.
To where, like pears burnt black as charcoal,
A myriad rooks, plucked from the trees,
Fall down into the puddles, hurl
Dry sadness deep into the eyes.
Below, the wet black earth shows through,
With sudden cries the wind is pitted,
The more haphazard, the more true
The poetry that sobs its heart out.
    Alternatively:
    February. Get ink. Weep.
Write the heart out about it. Sing
    Another song of February
While raucous slush burns black with spring.
Six grivnas for a buggy ride
Past booming bells, on screaming gears,
Out to a place where rain pours down
Louder than any ink or tears
Where like a flock of charcoal pears,
    A thousand blackbirds, ripped awry
From trees to puddles, knock dry grief
Into the deep end of the eye.
    A thaw patch blackens underfoot.
The wind is gutted with a scream.
True verses are the most haphazard,
Rhyming the heart out on a theme.

Any native speakers of Russian know why the translation contains 'sing' in the first stanza? There is nothing in the original that appears to mean 'sing' to me...

    • @b0yard
      @b0yard 6 лет назад +17

Yep, there is nothing about 'sing', but i think it's because of literary translation. There is 'навзрыд' which means when you can't hold your crying. Usually they say 'рыдать навзрыд' - to cry hard, but there is "писать навзрыд' - write instead of cry.

This wonderful song smells of Russian-Jewish nostalgia and depth, a world away from the (otherwise blessed) optimism and superficiality of the American life. I remember the minor diaspora of the 80's when the Jews from Soviet Union left, I deeply regret that Europe wasn't ready to relocate them. Hope that she will keep the feeling of belonging to another world.

So much to love about this song. Regina just sounds like a boss singin' it. Like nothing is gonna bring her down and she's on top. I especially love the Russian part. And then at the end around 4:03 with the echoes and the grunts, just so raw and powerful.

This song was a turning point for me in all music. I heard 'Fidelity' one night on Jay Leno I think, and thought it was such a sweet song that I explored her to see if there was more to her. And all I can say is WOW!! The first one I came to was Apres Moi, just because the title seemed weird. I couldn't believe my ears. I was so sick of new music til her. She isn't just good, she's a revolutionary. She's a Beatle, a Chuck Berry, she's a Regina. And everyone will know it eventually.

As long as rumbling slush outside
    In blackened spring burns deep.

This is one of the most amazing songs I have ever heard. And I don´t understand why so many people think that russian is an ugly and a harsh language :) I think it´s one of the most beautiful languages in the world!

I've just discovered Regina Spektor. The first songs Iheard were sweet and romantic, but this song is such another level. It's intense kinda dark... But I could not love it more!!!

Just saw her live concert from Hammersmith Apollo, and had to purchase this song directly afterwards! Finally found another track to add to my Regina collection, she has about 10 tracks which I really love - I've yet to appreciate a whole album with her. It was a very good live experience, it constantly reminded me of Tori Amos, both her looks and stage presence. Which of course is a good thing!

Taylor Neil Probably something like "I don't care what happens after i die" or "I care only about myself" / Literally "After me : the flood." (the "flood" as in Noah's story). French people understand it as "The flood might as well wipe everything after me, I don't care."... Something like that. :)

This song kind of reminds me of Stars by t.A.t.U., which starts out in English with a slow tempo, then has a verse in Russian that is much faster than the first verse, then more English, then more Russian. It's a great song and this song is great too.
