Bishop Barron on Social Media and the Catholic Culture of Contempt

  • Friends, Catholics must stop tearing each other apart online. We should be outraged by those who send virulent comments to one another, preventing actually fruitful evangelical conversation. Calumny, the mean-spirited accusation of another person, is a violation of both charity and justice. Who could possibly blame a non-believer for thinking, “I don’t want any part of that group” if they see how Catholics engage each other on social media? Join me in standing against this.

I found this channel when I was just a kid, and seeking knowledge and information about the Catholic faith. Now, at 21, after 8 years of searching and praying, I have just finished the RCIA process and been confirmed in the church. Becoming Catholic has been one of the most defining decisions of my life, and the most rewarding. I can confidently say that Bishop Barron was the reason I was able to begin that journey and has been the most powerful resource to me all the way through and still today. Always remember that the "silent" majority often feels very differently than the extremely vocal minority. I truly believe that the majority of those who follow Bishop Barron have stories like mine, of how profoundly this man who doesn't even live in the same state or nation as us has been able to influence our individual lives. May God strengthen you in your work, Father, and peace be with you and your team.

I think it would be good if we, especially Catholics residing near Bishop Barron's area, could craft some concrete action plan with local leaders and priests. And also, set a personal get-to-know or meeting together, so he could really connect with us. That way it won't be confrontational or heated, or about "who's right", but a real team effort.
Social media's become a really difficult place to get nuanced and personal messages through. At least in my experience! So grassroots first, changing one's mind and heart takes time. Let's keep praying and be patient and kind

I have an apology to make to Bishop Barron.
I was one of these calumny causing people in the past.
It felt great to be part of some radical traditional 'club' that could see what others couldn't, in that it was so obvious that the Church needed to go back to it's traditional roots!!
But eventually, I kind of became a jerk. I was in a sour mood all the time, I was angry all the time, I was easily put out of peace.
I realised that I was no longer a nice person. So I went back to the Catholic channels that made me glad to be Catholic, incliding WOF.
I am now a proud member of the Word on Fire Institute, will be confessing the sin of calumng in my next confession, and am forever grateful the Good Lord pulled me out of the rabbit hole of radical traditionalism.
May God remove the scales from the eyes of anyone else stuck in this lifestyle.

Let's stay creative in the fight. Things both aren't as terrible or as okay as people say, so we'll work this out.
My hunch is this time, a lot of bishops are apprehensive or have their hands tied. This time now, maybe it's the laity's job to inspire the "lead" the bishops! Then, in God's grace, they'll come. Not the first time in our history.

I just viewed this podcast as well as Dr. Taylor Marshall’s response and I can see both sides of the issue and I have a suggestion: Why not have a round table discussion with contributors of your choosing. There are many Catholics are confused and yes angry. We’re in need of clarity and dialogue about the church and the religious needs of the flock. May I suggest you follow the advice Dr. Jordan Peterson on how better to communicate with young and old who hunger for the Church.. Sincerely and respect, Ron Fredericks.

I believe both can do it. Catholics are angry and confused. And seeking truth and relationship with God. I also see both sides and I think it would be wonderful Bishop Barron if you can please respond. We can learn from this example and in truth, Catholics young and old are needing this. Because of your demonstrated commitment to comment on our culture and the events of the day from a Catholic perspective, I'm stunned by your silence regarding such threat. Yes, I get it, this movement has gained enough momentum and influence to destroy anyone and anything in its way. So I can understand why someone would be hesitant about stepping in its path with a spirit of resistance. But Bishop Barron, a great deception is underway and many Catholics are being swept away because they simply lack the intellectual and spiritual support to effectively fight back. Many of us are being led to spiritual slaughter.
Let's not fool ourselves, we know that movements of this sort can not survive in the presence of a strong and spiritually unified Church. We know from experience how this game is played. We are number one on the enemy's hit list. Statues are falling. One prominent voice in this movement has called for the destruction of all artistic depictions of a white Jesus. The organization leading this movement openly calls for the destruction of the nuclear family and a Marxist transformation of our economy and culture. Some of us thought these sorts of ideas only existed on the fringes of our culture. Others warned us of the Trojan Horses within our midst. The Church remained silent and now its gates are about to be stormed.
I Don't want to turn this into a diatribe so I'll end by simply saying; your guiding wisdom, courage, and spiritual support in desperately needed and would be appreciated. It's time to transform your pen and platform to a spiritual sword.

The rebuke is appreciated, Bishop Barron. It's nice to have a Church Leader willing to tell us to shape-up!
That said, I do hope you consider the point that the anger, although misguided and mis-targeted, must have a deep cause. Perhaps Catholics feeling abandoned by what they see as weak leadership from their spiritual leaders. Maybe they see the Bishops as being out-of-touch? For instance, Catholics saw how a bishop denounced his own Convington Catholic boys out of what looked like fear of political reprisal.

"May I, as a spiritual father..."
I think that phrase is so important in this video and overall when it comes to this issue. Bishop Barron, as obviously intelligent as he is, has always shown great humility. But he’s also shown great wisdom.
To avoid further criticism, it would’ve been easier to bypass or ignore all those mean spirited people, but instead, calmly and with respect (values they didn’t show towards him) the bishop offers a strong, authoritative correction with fatherly love and humility. These, I think, are the Christ-like qualities that draw so many of us to him.
I think it’s a very good thing that we’re reminded that even though they’re imperfect and deserve (constructive) criticism, all priests, especially bishops, teach and govern the Church with Christ-given authority.

I have been a Catholic for 5 years now, and am a former Protestant and a convert. I more or less reasoned my way into the Church over the issue of Sola Scriptura, and found an awesome RCIA class and director that really brought me home. I must say though, that had I seen the vitriol on social media that some Catholics have levied against other Catholics, I most likely would never have taken this step and joined the Church, and would still be a Protestant today. I would have seen the Catholic Church exactly as the world presents it: not as a place of truth, goodness, and beauty, but rather as a place of spite, ugliness, and vitriol. I have since largely remained silent on social media as a Catholic, because there is a huge calumny problem on Catholic social media that has gone unaddressed for far too long, and I don’t want it to get to me. I’ve been and am discerning a vocation to the Church, and I’m worried that the calumny and vitriol on Catholic social media would have real-world implications on my life.
I am very grateful to see this being thoughtfully addressed in this manner, and I hope and pray for the day when calumny committed by Catholics on social media sites comes to an end.

Like you mentioned, this online behaviour is troubling and discouraging, as it makes you wonder if you will have to deal with this type of people while in ministry in real life. I am absolutely horrified at the level of vitriolic rhetoric found with people like Taylor Marshall and his followers. They are on the attack and Love, kindness and decency are absent in their words. Calumny indeed. So very disappointing , distressing and disheartening. We must not lose heart but rather pray for one another and Bishop Barron and the WOF evangelical mission. Peace.

Rachel Fisher First, I want to say, “welcome home!“ Second, and from the bottom of my hearts, I have to say that I totally get it. In this age of Covid, people are experiencing the church based off of what they see online, and I am heartbroken that you had had to see these bad experiences. I think that the sad reality is that the people who are the most vocal about being Catholic on social media are the people who in real life are the least Catholic in practice. The greatest saints we have didn’t go around flaunting their Catholicism; they simply lived lives that exemplified the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. That sort of lifestyle doesn’t leave any doubt in anyone’s mind that you’re generally a Christian, or specifically that you‘re a Catholic. And that brings us to a striking paradox: those who flaunt their Catholicism online are in reality the least Catholic and the least holy people amongst us.

    Dear Bishop Barron,
I am now caught in the middle of your reaction to Taylor Marshall (your blocking of him) and your comments on what constitutes calumny, which I hope is not to say that you accuse him of such a grave sin. I don't think you do. But you do seem to be dismissive him by saying, "Have you read his book. He's an extremist." I am not saying you are wrong. I wish you could bring yourself, for the sake of onlooking laypeople, to have even a short dialogue with Dr. Marshall to clear the air and explain what you meant by saying in the matter of statues of saints being torn down, "It's the laity's job." Maybe it is and maybe it isn't or maybe it is both of our jobs. Maybe, your meaning is in a different context. I would rather put a good construction on what you said.
Maybe, we Catholics have too high an expectation of our Bishops, expecting them to make instantaneous and courageous stands against the anti-religious, anti-Catholic rhetoric and actions that are now occurring across our nation.
Or maybe, bishops owe a kind of fealty to the USCCB that forces them to hold the Catholic laity and their concerns at bay, perhaps rightly so, which you might want to bring us to understand.
Or maybe, it's unrealistic to expect every bishop to risk life and limb to defend the faith in each and every circumstance.
Or maybe prudence dictates that bishops lay low, as it were, rather than exacerbate the current anti-establishment sentiments being expressed in the tearing down of statues.
I personally have not read Dr. Marshall's book, but I have watched a number of his videos. He, like Cardinal Vigano, expresses "extreme" concern about the seeming effects of the Second Vatican Council on the Church; many laypeople like myself feel extreme concern and many of us don't know what to believe. The horrifying matters that have been revealed in recent years should be a concern to all serious Catholics. Whether a large part of the Catholic hierarchy is apostate is a question on many serious Catholics' minds. Voicing such concerns is far from sinful and one would have to be an uncaring Catholic not to wonder.
It is not my place to criticize you and I am not. But I do wonder if your dismissiveness toward Dr. Marshall will bear the good fruit you must have hoped it would. As a Catholic layperson, I hope to be able to hold the both of you in the highest esteem, only of differing opinions. If Dr. Marshall's taking offense, real or imagined, at your blocking of him, can be resolved, it appears to be in your power alone to do so.
My heartfelt love to you and all who proclaim the love of Christ to an ailing nation,
    to Jesus through Mary,
    James Caruso

Please read the well detailed Info Page on Word On Fire site regarding all supporting info regarding what Bishop said and how it is all completely Catholic and within our Catechism. Marshall mis-represents and mis-characterizes Bishops meaning and statements on Hell. Bishop Barron's comments are fully and totally within the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and references Saint John Paul II statements as well. Marshall also is belligerent and goading to Bishop regarding the radicals and statues vandalism. These past few weeks I've been reeling from another prominent Catholic speaker's posted video about racial injustice where she actually shrugged of and even JUSTIFIED systemic racism and racial profiling (among police) even if it subjugated her adopted black son (she's white) to the same treatment. I've been outraged (as well as many other people, Catholic and non-Catholic) but I've refrained from attacking her personhood and advocating for a ceasing of support from among Catholics because of what she's preaching. I came across a catholic youtuber who refused to attend Mass at her parish because her priest gave communion in the hand. She was clearly condemning her Parish priest. John Joyce my friend I'd invite you to google word on fire hell FAQ. It discuses the misinformation of bishop Barron's outlook on hell. A lot of the confusion is what is meant by hope. I think should hope that all men turned from sin even if we know sadly all of them won't. We should still hope they will all be saved in that they all CHOSE goodness. We aren't hoping that God will not give hell to those who choose it because that would deny God's nature and our free will and consequences for serious sins. God has to give us what we choose. We should hope all men will be saved, we should want that for everyone, even if it won't in fact happen. Similar to the prayer from Fatima "lead all souls into heaven, especially those in most in need of thy mercy". This statement wants all souls to go to heaven and we should pray that all souls turn from sin to make that happen. Wanting all souls to go to heaven is not wanting to erase consequence for sin, it's wanting all souls to turn FROM sin. Because we know a punishment awaits if not. His faq answers a lot of it. Here it is:

@@tomgreene2282 I'm not sure about your point, but I guess you suggest that we have enough of teachings to educate ourselves...???
To this is say; Sure, true. The Catholic Church has 2000 yrs of deep theological studies and teachings - a fantastic source of knowledge. But, that doesn't take away the need, nor the purpose of shephards and leadership.
As Ep 4:11-12 says "And he gave some as apostles, others as prophets, others as evangelists, others as pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ..."
I think this is still crusial (especially today after all the leadership scandals, from sexual abuse to the German Schism and everything in between), that faith filled leaders dares to show up, take a stand for God's word and Catholic teaching, and live out an example that we can follow.

Yep. Guilty. Been a very rough several weeks. I’m aware of the trad Catholic vs modern Catholic tension. Saw it last week with Bishop Barron’s article. Heard Taylor Marshall’s opinion, etc. It was all too much. We should all pause before we criticize Bishop Barron. Pause. I’ve listened to his public teachings. His recent podcasts. Bishop Barron makes it very very clear to the entire world, Jesus Christ is Lord. This is the antithesis of the Marxist message and they will come for him eventually. I have to give him my full respect and trust. He is right. It’s time for the laity to rise, educate themselves, and be good Catholics. We have all seen the pew studies. We can’t simply rely on the bishops. WE need to shoulder more responsibility. Thank you, Bishop Barron for this reminder. Let’s hope Marshall and crew also make a shift so we can unify and get ready for what is obviously coming.

SovngardeBeckoned I understand. However, Bishop Barron has publicly stated something very similar to your thoughts on the poor teaching of Catholic doctrines MANY times. I’ve heard him clearly express this on podcast, lectures and other video content. He has relentlessly placed the historical Jesus Christ at the center of his teaching. This is not a minor point. Again, publicly teaching the objective truths found within Christianity is the antithesis of the post modern agenda. It is exactly what gets you targeted and cancelled. Bishop Barron has done this boldly and publicly for DECADES. I can’t simply ignore this fact. It feels a bit ungrateful. I also don’t think his content is for the lightly catechized. He is exploring doctrines with nuance and a style that is attractive to a variety of individuals. This is a gift. Let’s hope we all start pulling together and recognize when our behavior is jeopardizing our ability to stand against the flood that is coming. Taylor and the trads need to make sure they aren’t fighting against windmills and individuals that are not a threat. Perhaps our current and dire situation is God’s way of bringing us back together. If this fracture between individuals that are clearly good Catholics continues to grow, we don’t stand a chance against a passionate and united Marxist/Globalist agenda.

Anger and hatred is addictive, and it can attach itself to anyone, even the most well meaning. The hard part is that everyone everywhere is suffering at the same time, especially from fear and confusion, and a feeling of abandonment. People are desperate for human leaders to show them the way, and they do not see anyone. I'm not sure what the answer is, but it is certainly not tearing each other apart online. That is not the Catholic way. Whether these militant Catholic organizations and individuals like it or not, Bishop Barron has shown the light of Christ to thousands of people around the world, and he is their hero. No good comes from these attacks. As Catholics, we all know that only true agape love, willing the good of the other, is the cure for the disease of hatred. Disagree if you want, but don't forget the love. Pray, pray, pray for Jesus to come into your heart and show you the way, and then maybe you can be the leader you have been looking for.

There's a whole rightwing Catholic revolution of sorts that does things like drop hints that Pope Francis is the devil because he's very tolerant of other religions and wants to save the rainforest, and thinks the U.N. is good rather than a boogie man with world domination plans.
RUclips is, as Famous Atheist Sam Harris says, a rightwing cesspool. But, of course, we ought not just point the finger at a politic that invites young traditionalists to edgy ragebait conservatism with an all-white demographic.
God is watching, or, the good Bishop is, and if not either, at least, our own eyes, because as the Bishop asks: do people read their own tweets/comments? To answer, no, no, there's no way.
As someone hardened by the casual semi-anonymous war of all against all on the net, i can say i'm soundly chastised and otherwise demolished by the Bishops's loving contempt for a poisonous drama that is exactly as he says: an immediate one-way trip to hell if we bother consulting scriptures, dogmas, just Google what a virtue is, make some vague attempt at remembering the difference between right and wrong, or just stumble across John 3:16.
There are a lot of people around these parts whom are able to take things to a dark place when they encounter beliefs contrary to their worldview. It has become entirely common in current year to divine some weakness of character in an 'opponent' and then say that that weakness invalidates their views, or some other sort of harshness where we abandon graciousness in favour of driving a point home and relishing in the damage that causes as if every Tom and Dick could be the devil and probably are because _muh ingroup tribalism_ that is hardly as welcoming as the early church.
RUclips is adept at delivering to each of us our _personal_ sacred creeds, it is adept at putting us in an ingroup, in a channel, giving us our vision of the Holy Grail, and then immediately proposing that scary under-the-bed Muslims or whatever want to take it away.
      This is you: X

Bishop Barron, I am a WOF member and have always enjoyed the content of the number of entertaining series that you do
Specifically from a historical viewpoint. On this point however, I felt somewhat invalidated when you made the comment that some comments by Catholics could only be explained in two terms. They are either trying to impress co-workers or they are doing it out of some kind of malice.
What if they are just simply concerned that our bishops are putting out an aire of complacency or indifference, at a time when the Church desperately needs guidance and true men of God as role models and leaders? We are simply asking for a demonstrable response from our church leaders in standing up to the sacrilege, blasphemy and desecration that the Church is enduring from an evil so pervasive, so brazenly anti-Christian that some brave priests have done exorcisms of public spaces.
We are entering into a time when we The Church must stand up for God, not hide. I spoke to a friend recently who I have not spoken with since the lockdown. She told me she had left the church for a non-denominational one because she just couldn’t take the scandals, the corruption and debacles that has been tolerated beginning with the priests all the way to the Curia and now the Pope. (Pachimama) This was heartbreaking.
We as Catholics need to be unified in our defense of our faith, and all that is true, good and beautiful. The statues and icons of the saints are tools to transport our souls into communion with God and the saints. Our bishops need to be seen alongside the laypeople in the public square defending these beliefs. What would John of Damascus think of us now?
    Respectfully and with filial love.

It's been hard for me. I'm a longtime fan of the His Excellency. But it seemed in this moment, we needed from our shepherds more than something hortatory, but something more like joining us laity on the front lines. So I understood the dismay and even frustration at the suggestion that the laity were "on their own" in the secular realm. They were looking for leadership. So I commend Bishop Barron for defending St. Serra's statue in Ventura and giving the Church that leadership it wanted all along. I regret that so much vitriol was spilt in the interim between his statement on Vatican II and his actions that followed which quashed the fears that we were being abandoned by a shepherd.
