I had a thing like an ez tracer when I was a kid, it got incredibly hot and I had to trace fast before the heat dehydrated and warped the original image. I’ve had much better luck tracing off the flat screen monitor.
I've been enjoying this series of videos but this one is my favourite so far. I like the inclusion of small tools and upgrades for them. Not just toys and big purchases
The first 30 seconds of Bill struggling to get the friggin wobbly projector to cooperate just brings me so much joy! Just EXACTLY like middle and high school! We were JUST getting in screen projectors that connected to the classroom computers, but a lot of the teachers didn't understand or trust them yet, so they stuck with these things for years. The squeaky memories LOL
One of my favourite things about model kits, is having the opportunity to use the word "sprue", a true gem of the English language (via the magnificent Dutch, of course!) Some words just bring me joy, and yes, it turns out I am indeed neurodivergent (not quite sure how it took 40 years for me to figure that out, given the evidence.) I love these annual favourites videos, and always a joy to see Bill!
It was an incredible book. A very good lesson book on comic book drawing and inking. I lost my original copy from years ago. A few years ago I picked up another one a used book store.
I still have mine that I found in a thrift store in high school. I've supplemented it with other drawing books, but that one is the core of my how to draw library just for how comprehensively it covers _all_ aspects of making a comic book and not just the figure drawing most books focus on.
I have one too that I got as a kid in the late 80s and it is fantastic. There was a new expanded edition published a few years back that is well worth picking up for those of us whose original copy is getting a little dog-eared. I didn't have to buy a copy when I went to animation school and one of my professors put it on the required texts for storyboarding class. The perspective section is unparalleled in its clarity and simplicity.
1:35 - I have a DIY sandpaper cutter I made about 20 years ago, consisting of a flat board, old hacksaw blade, two washers for stand-offs, two wood screws, and a strip of wood as a fence square to the blade. Marked out for 1/4 sheet, etc. Basically, free and easy to build.
I got that book back in the 90's! How to draw comics the marvel way is almost certainly a crucial node in the path that led to my 2 decade and going art career. I still have my copy but it is so much more beaten up because I carried it in my backpack all time through 4th to 7th grade.
In addition to Merlin, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology offers eBird, which enhances Merlin's functionality. eBird allows you to log the birds you observe with more detail and see the location of recent sightings, helping you find birds you might want to see.
I love the Merlin bird identifier, had it for about a year now and its very accurate. Identified so many birds nearby that I hadn't even heard of before.
I was an AV tech back in the 80s. I've set up hundreds of overhead projectors. The company I worked for had a store room with dozens of them. Probably the number 1 meeting presentation tool of that decade.
I've never seen one that big before. The marvel drawing book I had with the same cover was smaller, had a spiral spine, and came with pensils and markers
@6:24 - "like playing pokemon go but with actual birds" is how I describe what we use Merlin for when hiking. Not hardcore birders but love to find new ones when we are traveling hiking. Though we don't count it unless we get a picture, which Merlin usually does a great job of helping us figure out what we took a picture of (usually with a big camera that I transfer to the phone). All about finding new "lifers".
Love to see that copy of How To Draw Comics the Marvel Way! I still have my copy from the 80s. Will recommend Cosplay the Marvel Way to my wife, but since all her cosplays end with "but in a Regency style", it might not work for her :)
Always happy to see the old How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way book. Next to Bridgman's Constructive Anatomy it was a must read for aspiring comics artists when I was in highschool and almost a lost art these days.
I hear Whip-poor-wills here in South Florida all the time, but I've never seen one. Curious about that I did a google image search and discovered they look exactly like bark on a live oak (which is where I hear them), so distinguishing them from a lump on a branch is virtually impossible. Great camouflage.
After I'd been drawing webcomics for a few years, I picked up How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way. It was recommended by a lot of artists, and an interesting read, but I didn't really come away learning much from it that I hadn't already picked up elsewhere. What I *did* add to my understanding was quite valuable though. I strongly recommend Scott McCloud's book "Understanding Comics" (and if you like it, the third one in that trilogy, "Making Comics"). Those two books are densely packed with a comprehensive analysis of comics and comic-making that taught me an endless wealth of useful information and understanding of the genre. I go back and read them again every few years, and always pick up something else to improve on.
I might have checked out the hardcover of “how to draw comics the Marvel way” from my elementary school library and forgot to return it. Also a possibility it’s on a shelf in the next room.
I'm on my third copy of 'How to draw the Marvel Way'. The first copy was filled in by my then 6 year old son sooooo many times I couldn't erase it clean any longer without the pages shredding. The second copy of it disappeared with the same son when he moved out at 19. I've seen it on the book shelf at his house! The third copy is more frequently hidden away when ever the same son, now 24, comes over. When he see's the gap on the shelf he asks if i still have a copy as his is getting a bit old....... I've told him I'll leave it to him in my Will. No respect!
"How To Draw Comics The Marvel Way" is what I recommend anyone interested in art read to get a grip on anatomy and perspective basics. I have a years old well worn copy myself.
Typical Bill, always with a focus on usability and inspiration. I've learned so much from him and Britt over the years... Those tiny saws are a staple in the model kit world, especially for Gundam model builders who customize their robots by extending and upgrading parts (we often extend limbs by inserting segments of a few millimeters to tweak the proportions).
How to draw comics the marvel way has been a life long favourite of mine, and is a book I've gifted to many kids in my life over the years. I've been disappointed recently in the quality of the new printings. I'm not sure what's up, but I've noticed, in comparison to my personal copy from the 80s, that the recent copies seem to be much lighter. Not in weight, but in terms of the actual printing. Lines that should be black have become grey, and some line work has become so light as to be illegible. I sincerely hope it's an issue that is, or has now been addressed.
Hey Bill You Copy Of " How To Draw The Marvel Way" is not the original, the original was allot bigger book I Have one, I can send you a pic if you want !!
See, this is what I want. Adam can take as much time as he wants talking about his favourite things, but all the others should be this short, sharp, and shiny. I skipped most of the first girl and a good portion of the second on account of how boring and lengthy they were. Why say in 20 minutes what can be done in just over 5?

I have that very same How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way book! What a classic - especially for the inking instructions
Who didn't? It was the only book published at the time that was comicbook related.
I saw this in a bookstore as a kid and wanted it soooo bad. I saved up for months to afford it. It did not disappoint!!
We had LCD displays that went over these projectors as a way to project a computer screen. It was bananas.

Wow, How to draw comics the marvel way.. I checked that out of school in 2nd grade 35 years ago. Memory unlocked.
It was an incredible book. A very good lesson book on comic book drawing and inking. I lost my original copy from years ago. A few years ago I picked up another one a used book store.
My best friend still has his!
Still have mine! Great book!

What a great year for stuff! =D
I love seeing videos from more of the crew!
I like this very much. You make the process look far easier than it is.
I still have my original Marvel drawing book. One of my favorite things!
Two thumbs up for the Merlin app. I'd give more, but I only have two thumbs! LOL!
Oooohhh that hobby saw.
I love that sandpaper organizator and I had used a saw blade to cut paper !
2:38 I have that exact same book, it paved the way for my artistry from 10 years old on. I’ve had it since 1980.
I had that OG How to Draw Comics book when I was young, bringing back some memories!

That’s fabulous! Thanks for sharing.
+1 to Merlin. Successfully ID'd a great horned owl by recording it's Hoots just last night.

Sand paper station. OoooooOOOooo!!!
*whimpers jealously*
Best favorite things so far. Bill was short and sweet. No rambling on and on. Still need chapters
No way I had that Marvel art book and I lost it and it still hurts to this day
Damn that sucks. I still have mine and gave it to my kids
You can still find them at used book stores. I got 2 copies.
If you don't mind buying used books from ebay, there are tons of listings there for reasonable prices.
Any info on the jig being used with the hobby saw? Is that a 3d print, or a purchased item?
Looks like a Zona Mini Miter box from Amazon.
How to draw the marvel way is one of the best artist books, all those J. Buscema drawings . Very cool!
My mom
Gave me the how to draw comics book as a kid. I loved it.
Thank you for the love!!!!!!!
0:49 That's actually smart AF.....
Wow, I showed that book to my son a few months ago. It's an awesome book.
I've never seen one that big before. The marvel drawing book I had with the same cover was smaller, had a spiral spine, and came with pensils and markers

Merlin is fantastic.
Bill and Britney my favorite team of creatives.
THanks!
The shape of the spaceship reminded me of Red Dwarf. I always thought it resembles a fly.
i have the same book omg love it
These were all cool things!

Merlin app is crazy fun (and good!)
I have one of those overhead projector !
That sandpaper cutter looks amazing
Oh man a Transforming Projector.
If you knew how many of those I've seen tossed over the years
Cool bird app!

Honestly I want that sandpaper stand more than I need the cutter
Would have been amazing to have chapter markers for each thing
2:33 I have that same book!

Hey Bill! Is the small miter box made by Olfa too?
Great video sir
Cool stuff

I have a years old well worn copy myself.
Link for the office mail turntable?
DUDE! How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way, Outer Wilds, AND Merlin Bird App?! Are we best friends?? Also, do you have art up anywhere?
Bill your sandpaper station looks a little rough 🤣

What kind of little mitre box was that?
Thanks for the PTSD I didn't know I had with overhead projectors.

Olfa invented the snap cutter.
I always forget Bill is a tested member until this time of year
I still have my copy of How To Draw Comics The Marvel Way! 👍
Right on!
0:53 Overhead Projectors were used in the 70's, for Liquid Light Shows! ruclips.net/video/gDYDq3eNUZc/видео.html (mind altering substances optional)
that saw is like a mini japanese saw
As expected, I love every one of Norm's fave things!
2nd channel?
OMG I have a (highly annotated by 7 yr old me) copy of How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way
Meanwhile German school and some universities still using overhead projectors
Ok I have no interest in birds, but I gotta say that bird app does sound pretty impressive.
That’s how it starts…
Outer Wilds
"Overhead projectors where used in the 80s and 90s" Meanwhile german schools still use them lmao
