- Sometimes, you are much stronger than you think.
On a whim I decided to do one of my longest rides in over 50 year of cycling. Needless to say, it got a bit tough.

Congrats Leonard. That ride was impressive and you deserve all the accolades that comes with it. 1300 m of climbing will be a challenge. It will be about 26C in Cape Town so lots of hydration. You have encouraged me to do a 115 km ride next month since it was 5 years for my last one.
I am super impressed Leonard! Just wait till the magic starts happening. Trust me it will.
Well done Leonard… one thing that’s never or rarely talked about is having the mental strength or fortitude to finish some of these rides… sometimes I have it and sometimes I don’t…
Well done Leonard great effort.looking forward to doing my first 162 kilometres for my 65 th birthday 😅
Sincerest congratulations and a hearty "Well done!" on your 7-hour-plus trip to Oxford, Leonardo! Good on you!!
Your South Africa ride may not be a day at the spa, but you've proven you can do it - and live!
Congratulations on the breakthrough! Ride on!
That proves the power of positive thinking or " Mind over matress" Well done, I have never come close to that distance
Whatever happens in life, just keep pedaling!! That's the way of living.
That’s incredible. I saw in your face a smile of confidence that you were proud of yourself. That’s so cool. Keep up the good work & the postings are so fun to see and hear about your conquests
Hi Leonard chapeau! Reminds me of a ride I did from Crowthorne to Chadlington via Oxford to visit my in-laws. After Reading, I chose the lower road via Pangbourne and Goring, much easier than taking the ridge road. I was younger by 25years and surprisingly fit enough to ride my Peugeot 10spd all that way. Also rode a lot around Alton, Farnham, Guildford etc in my early 20s, so now at nearly 70 and having got the bug again , I must have some of the old muscle memory left and my fitness is increasing. Thanks to your inspiration last year I managed 90plus rides in 90 days ish! Keep up the good work and best of luck with your South African trip.
Yes, that lower road seems like a better option if not a slightly longer one.
Well done Leonard! You make a great presenter and make great videos.
Thats a good one... builds karakter! Far outside the comfort zone....
The sheer vibe of the CTCT will carry you through. You'll be ok. Enjoy it🙂.
This is an amazing accomplishment, Leonard. Congratulations on finding the strength to do it, and wishing you a strong ride in SA. Cheers from Canada
Great ride, Leonard. You are an inspiration!
Hats off to you Leonard, and a big well done!!!
Great Ride Leonard, well done you will smash South Africa , Look forward to the footage, Have a great trip
Those last miles of a extremely long ride are so tough on everything body and mind. Well done and wish you well on your big ride.
LeonardoPower💪. Never cease to amaze me. Well done.
Well done Leonard, it’s surprising we can often find that extra boost when we need it. Good luck in South Africa better weather will help.
Excellent. Inspiring me to get the road bike ready for spring. I've just been commuting on the e-bike over winter.
Well done Leonard thanks for sharing and some good tips , hope the ride puts you in good stead for your challenge in Cape Town 👍😊
Congrats on the ride Leonard. I find a lot of the battle when the legs are feeling tired is with the mind. Mental strength is definitely a big factor on longer rides 👍
Well done Leonard, you have inspired me to do the same this summer. Thank you for sharing!
Congrats. Counting those last Kilos was probably like watching paint dry. Those are the times when having a riding buddy(s) help. You can keep each other going and every so often hold a conversation. It's hard(er) when you are alone but I just keep pointing out a spot ahead and keep telling myself ride to that spot and see how you feel and next thing I know...done. Sometimes you have to psyche yourself.
I just noticed your channel is over 50k Congratulations. I'm looking forward to your trip as well!
Good job Leonard, great practise to get ready for South Africa. I trust the views will provide ample motivation on those climbs, especially Chapmans Peak! Enjoy the trip mate!
Nice training run Bud. You'll be ready to roll for your event now!
Congratulations Leonard ! Well done! Good job telling your negative side of your brain to shut up! 😊. Take it easy in your tapering period and good luck in South Africa. Looking forward to seeing your SA vlogs.
I will look out for you Leonard, I'm starting at 7.10, have a good flight and enjoy the ride
Mine is an 0.730 start. If by some miracle you spot me make sure to say hello.
Chapeau!
Well done, another great video and a fab ride. Good luck for the SA event. You can definitely talk yourself through that one! Enjoy!
Ken
Great achievement. I live in Emsworth but originate from Swindon. Always wanted to cycle between the two, you've given me motivation to do that.
Well done sir, I am always amazed at the distance and elevation you manage to cover on your rides.
Awesome.
very good ride Len...well done indeed
Good luck Leonard.
Nice work!
Congratulations you are an inspiration
Well done, and good luck!
Honest as ever ! Many thanks
Great work, and a nice change in format 😊
That is commendable
Nice one Leonard!💪
Incredible 🎉😅Super ride!
Congratulations. Kudos
Well done keep it up 👍
Talk about a powerful journey and message. I still can't picture doing 100 km but that is my goal for this season. I really appreciated you sharing what was going on in your mind as what you shared is exactly the limiting mindset that has kept me stuck in my cycling....my life. I am learning slowly how to break through. I am going to share this with my family as we are working on 75 days of personal challenges and this video will inspire them as well. Thank you soooooo much for sharing your adventures. Now, I am off to pick up my smart trainer so I can work on joining you on a ride someday.
Good luck with your challenges. You will be very welcome to join me one day.
A huge congratulations!
Thanks.
Amazing!!! I'm happy for your 100km. By the end of the year I will see a new video with title "My first ever 160km." And of course, we want see another big smile picture to show how happy you got with this achievement.
I’ve ridden 160 Kms before…but only twice and the last time was back in 2015.
Very best of luck to you, Leonard! Have fun.
Thank you, I will
Good for you, Leonard.
Good Job 👍
congratulations, big ride. and good luck for in a few weeks. Just keep pedaling,. Drew.
Great job Leonard!!
Thanks Christopher
Great ride Leonard I’m sure all will go well in S.A.Just got the heat to deal with😬😬😬😬.Really enjoying your content bud
Always a nice feeling to surprise yourself. Enjoying your content as always.
What a great ride! Thank you for sharing it with us.. You’re a huge inspiration 👍🏼👍🏼💯
Thanks for watching.
nice job, good luck
Well done Leonard it sounds an adventure, that’s a great distance to do in prep for your trip. I’m always nervous of just planning a route that I’m not familiar with but sometimes it’s the only way to discover new things.
Thanks Heidi, I was also a bit nervous about the route. At one point, in the middle of nowhere on that tough Caversham to Didcot section there was a closed road. Fortunately, the Karoo told me to turn left just before. Not sure what I would have done if it hadn’t.
True inspiration for the start of my cycling journey. Thank you & enjoy S. Africa! 🚴♂️
Good luck.
Well done 👏 congratulations your the man keep doing your thing 🙏🏿… love watching your videos …
Cycling is not just physical strength, it's defenitly about mental strength too. Doesn't matter how strong you are, if the mind says no, you're not going anywhere.
Completing that long ride will hopefully give you the much needed confidince that you can do the ride in South-Afrika as well.
Congratulations. ❤
And I hope you have fun in South Africa. 🙂
It’s going to be amazing.
That was great Leonard! Interesting video having you talk through the ride a lot more than usual, rather than ride footage. Worked really well.
Glad you liked it. I would have liked to have had plenty of b-roll, though.
Really enjoying your videos. I just can't relate to the other videos that talk about miniscule improvements that don't apply to me. For most people, it's about getting out there and doing the work and understanding all the "evils" that stop us from doing it. Thanks for the help!
Congratulations from. California
Well done Leonard, looking forward to watch South Africa vlogs
We all get that “want to give up feeling”. Then, later in the ride, you just find that you don’t worry and just keep going.
Good luck on your S Africa. Ride love the videos
Awesome...this such a great Refreshing account of normal everyday cyclists. Hats off to your self motivation and pushing on.
well done Leonard, that was a strong ride especially after the dark moments around Alton - to push on from there and keep yourself going takes some mental strength as well as fitness - now you've got that ride in the bank you'll be able to enjoy SA - good luck, you've got it!!
I hope you are right, Afzal.
Well done Leonard. It's amazing how far you can go if you can just convince yourself to try.
I count down the kilometres in the same way, it doesn't really help but its something to occupy the mind.
I think it does help. It’s great for the mind seeing a number go down rather than going up.
Well done sir!
Thanks.
Top job sir! Always amazes me, how much we humans can do, if we put our mind to it. Not having any obvious bail outs always helps concentrate the mind! Well done, you've got this!
We are generally much stronger than we think.
Well done, dear chap! Giving yourself a talking-to is one of the best pick-ups ever. Onward and (..gasp...) upward!
We’ve both been there together on a tough climb.
That's so cool, Leonard - well done! That's an inspiration. I'm hoping to complete an Audax 200Km brevet myself in a few months.
Good luck. That’s quite a ride.
Definitely ready. As a former marathon/ultra runner - last long run/ride then tapering plus a good fuel/refuel and hydration strategy (nothing new and untried) worked for me. Maybe set alarms to remind yourself to eat and drink. Have a great trip
Great advice about setting the alarm.
Awesome job Leonardo! I stupidly set off on a very similar ride re- distance and elevation on what turned out to be the hottest day of 2022! Nothing beats completing what feels like an impossible challenge! Chapeau! You can now set off for SA full of confidence and the knowledge that you can do this alone, so in the company of like minded cyclists, you will have a ball 😊
I’m sure my ride in Cape Town will be a blast. Riding in heat is tough but so too is riding in the cold. Equally difficult
Just keep doing this, I'm fighting to get back to fitness, I'm with you right now. Keep doing this the weight will scream off your bones you won't believe it.
I wish you luck Leonard for your SA trip! But it doesn't appear as though you will need it - you've got this!!
I Hope so.
Awesome ride! Good luck in SA!
Thanks.
And here’s me thinking cycling is fun 😂😂Well done for manning up 💪Struggling with the knees playing up at the moment but will be out tomorrow 😋🚲👀
Kudo's Leonard! By the by, you managed to do more km's in this one ride then I have this entire year so far, so shame on me and kudo's to you...
Leonard your ride in South Africa will be easier because you will be riding with friends. Well done on your big ride to Oxford, great effort.
Not sure how much we will be riding together. We may well have very different start times.
Well done on your big ride. It'll be warmer on your event which helps. Remember your food and drink regime, stop looking at the Karoo and enjoy the ride. If you have to walk 150 yds on a 60 mile ride so what. Good luck on your venture. Just enjoy it.
I’m determined to enjoy it; it’s a spectacular route.
Well done, Leonard, and good luck 😉 You got me curious: What are your longest rides? Distance? From where to where?
My longest ride is 165kms (102 miles) but I haven’t done this distance in years.
Congratulations. You are in great shape for South Africa. Not sure what your vlogging plan is for SA but my recommendation would be to do as you did on the Oxford spin and just enjoy the cycle. You've given us plenty of great films so take a break and enjoy it. Also, the shot in Oxford where you walk out onto the green looks very like a similar shot form the film Saltburn? Then again, | could be imagining things. Thank you, great video.
I’ve not watched all of Saltburn but I know it was set in Oxford so it’s more than possible. My love of the city comes from watching Inspector Morse and Endeavour.
I hope South Africa doesn't have a much higher elevation than home.
That was not only an entertaining video, but an inspirational one as well.
I'd say good luck but... it is your experience and enthusiasm that will make that ride easy and fun, for you and those around you.
Go safe and watch the critters down there.
Thanks Frank. Apparently, it’s the monkeys we need to keep an eye on.
Agreed! Plugging away will deliver you results … a very important element is to set up your bike so it meets you and your capabilities ‘half way’.
A friend and I - he’s nearly 75 and I’m ahead of him by a few years - recently completed the 7 Peaks Ride here in Victoria. Find it on the internet.
Some big days and one in particular, 140km and 2900m of climb with overnight kit. And the following day, another big day to get back to our start point and the car! Here’s what I learnt about me and the bike over the course of the training and the rides of the 7 Peaks.
1. Comfort. Select an endurance or gravel bike and fit the right tyres for the ride. Brooks seat. Trek Checkpoint carbon. Eat and drink.
2. Regardless of what is fitted on the bike at present, if you’re going to do this thing, get the gearing and gear range aligned with your strength and ability. I went for a new rear cluster to get even lower low gears …
3. Pedal, cleat and shoe selection too, so you can get off and walk when there’s no other option.
4. And above all, start your body preparation a long way out from the ride. Easier here in Oz where, although the winter in southwest Victoria can be wet n cold at times, we can generally find days every week to get out and ride. With South Africa looming, I hope you’ve spent sufficient hours defeating the real or electronic hills indoors in your prep time.
Hope it all goes well when you get there.
It’s certainly a whole load of things needing to be right to make the ride as easy as possible.
@@jollygoodvelo and well worth doing when the outcomes are so, so fulfilling. 😁😁
You might not believe me, but you are now capable of going up Stelvio and such. I like to do this kind of rides on vacation from town to town and 115 km with a number of small climbs and 1200m of climb in total is much harder than this one climb of 1850m and a total of 50km. It is much easier to control the speed and keep slow enough if you know this is one long climb than going up 5 or 10 times.
👍 😊
Yet another inspiring ride.
What did you eat/drink along the way?
I did; I was drinking energy drinks and water with energy bars.
I achieved one of my longest rides last year. I measure in miles and it was 61.8 miles. WhenI got home I converted it to kms. 99.55. 🤦🏼♂️
Well done.
I Wish you luck for South Africa!
Wow! Awesome ride, congratulations 🎉 I’d love to hear more about the logistics of such a long ride (it’s further than I’ve ever done!). In particular did you plan rest stops along the way and what did you do about nutrition? Did you have any fear of ‘bonking’ or even fear of passing out if fueling was inadequate or because of dehydration? Thanks - and good luck with the tapering!
Bonking is a risk but if you eat and drink enough it shouldn’t really be an issue. Worst case, I would have just stopped at a suitable location and called my other half to come and rescue me.
Congratulations. You pushed through. It isn't just the distance but also the elevation gain that made that an impressive ride.
BTW what is your longest ever ride?
My longest ride is 165kms (102 miles)
Ya fixed the intro text!! FINALLY, I did something of worth....
Well done Leonard🎉!!! Full of admiration! I am though slightly worried that you didn’t mention fuelling and hydration in your ride. (in fact you rarely do). Is it an area of improvement for you do you think?
I do talk about it occasionally but no, I am not the most conscientious.
I wanna say we'll done and I am happy you completed and exceeded your goal..but, nobody in the remarks seems to have mentioned this part.. I'm curious if you brought enough snacks, water and have you stopped along the way for fuel? That's an easy 2 bottles of water and a few treats, gels type of ride im guessing and you'll want to "practice" fueling so not to run into exhaustion like you mentioned a few times . Good luck on your trip and..well done, remember to bring enough fuel 😉👍
Thanks. Yes, I refuled along the way, stopping at various garages for energy drinks, bars and water.
I am so disappointed. I was looking forward to seeing a nice long video of that ride. I'd have turned that into a nice, long 60 minute extravaganza.
Congrats for getting it done, especially this early in the year. Enjoy SA and the warmer weather. You better take a good vid of that event.
Sorry Steve! I Will definitely need to film the vlog ok the main ride in SA!
