      Nothing to gain? Pogacar has 2 teammates sitting a minute behind him, Roglic 20s behind him. Could have made that +2 minutes. Now he needs to watch all three UAE riders, instead of some flexibility. If Ayuso, Almeida attacks, Ving will need to ride/close it (since he has no teammates at that point). I understand he doesn't like to 'gamble' a bit and not riding is also ok in his position, but it is not like he had nothing to gain here. (Now that is ofcourse theoretical, because we all know Ayuso/Almeida will probably not be used that way :))

    Well, there's racing to win and then there's racing not to lose. I agree with Remco, when he said Jonas lacked the balls to race.
    To you, I'm sure, that sounds amateurish, but to those that follow cycling, we adore that mentality because of the epic rides that we witness as a result. Pantani and Contador are both revered because of their attacking style--and they won, too.
    Worrying about what can happen leads to dull, boring racing. I'm not disputing that tactically it might make more sense, but the podium could have been decided today. Roglic could have been put to bed, and Jonas should be equally concerned that Roglic comes to form in the third week the same as we are supposed to fear Jonas hits his.
    Im rooting for Tadej and Remco to tag team Visma and Jonas in the same manner Jumbo tag teamed Tadej. They benefitted from having the superior team, and now that they don't, Jonas will have to earn it on his own anyway. When the mountains come, it will be UAE dictating the terms, not VLab, and all of that defensive riding will be for nothing. Here's hoping that Jonas doesn't even make podium🤷🏼‍♂️

      @@matthillard9363 I did watch it. This year is more interesting because there are more GC contenders than in past years. Jonas will not be able to hide behind his "train". They will not have the superior team in the mountains, which means he will have to respond to attacks on his own. There will be a showdown, so we will see who the best rider in this year's tour actually is. It won't be the best team.

    • @matthillard9363
      @matthillard9363 5 дней назад

      @user-rl4fp4xq6v there are only two contenders. Just cause they say that on the TV doesn't mean it's legit but it sells the show. It's jonas's race to lose but he's too crafty and too strong in the big mountains. Tadej sadly has cracked the past two years at critical moments because he fried his team then fried himself. Should really have rode defensively on stage 11. He could have taken all bonus points and either remco or his team could have outsprinted jonas and he would have opened up more time. Nonetheless it makes for entertaining riding but sadly offers another 2nd place

    • @user-rl4fp4xq6v
      @user-rl4fp4xq6v 5 дней назад

      @@matthillard9363 as I've said to other subject matter debaters...y'all rarely look at the entire context before assuming you know the solution.
      First year Tadej won the tour, he did t even have a team. he rode Roglic and Jumbo Visma all the way. Second year, Primoz crashed himself out, so he didn't need his team then either. Third year, and this is where the validity sets in when discussing lack of tactical awareness on Tadej's part, he wanted to prove he was stronger than both Primoz and Jonas, and ended up blowing himself up. It was stupid, and he lost. Last year, the UAE team they brought wasn't anywhere close to the level of this year's team. Has anyone heard from Marc Hirschi lately? He got his money and then decided to become a bum, until COVID forced him to retire from the race. So JV was able to keep putting him to the sword, in addition to him misusing the team he did have, and he lost again--i got it, no worries.
      This year he has the best team, although he is still riding like an idiot in certain situations, and if they learn from the mistakes they've made to date, they can put VLAB in the hurt locker--because the team isn't that strong, and I would send Yates or Almeida up the damn road every single day until VLAB were burnt. And then it's mano y mano, and Jonas isn't winning that battle. Not with the deficit he already has. UAE has to be prepared to have Tadej lose the tour in order for him to win it. Jonas' only advantage is he weighs 125lbs. When they go up, they have to come down, and if other riders would make Jonas work--see Remco and Primoz pulling for him when Tadej attacks, then this race would already be over. And you know it.

    In his post race interview Tiesj Benoot said that because there is a high risk of getting a puncture on gravel and team cars are not allowed behind the peloton on gravel VLB decided that Jan Tratnick would ride the whole race behind Jonas since they ride a bike with the same size and set up. This worked perfectly when both Jonas and Tiesj who were riding together got a puncture at exactly the same spot and Jan Tratnick was close behind.
    Smart planning.
    As to Remco’s whining post race about the tactics of Jonas, this was frankly juvenile since as Chris says Jonas is not worried about Primoz but about Tadej.
    I don’t think that gravel should be a part of the TDF primarily because you cannot have team cars behind so if a favorite gets a puncture and has no replacement bike available immediately as Jonas did then his whole GC race is over.
    To those who say there should be a gravel sector I ask you then why not introduce a proper downhill MBT sector?

    • @janefreeman995

    Thank you, Chris for this great analysis!!! I am realizing how many people simply do not understand tactics of stage racing, particularly in a grand tour. Chris, you did a great job of explaining WHY what Jonas did was so smart. Racing is about saving energy so that when you need it, you have the reserves to use. Evenepoel has always relied on his brute physicality and it will come back to bite him. Tadej races with his emotions and tends to go too often and too hard. He has had a brilliant spring, but I wonder if his antics will catch up with him eventually.
    Patience, timing , and tactics are key. This is something that Jonas has demonstrated so well over the years. Some say he is boring, but he knows how to race. We will eventually know if he is totally recovered from his injuries and 100% fit. I personally do not think he is, but he is definitely racing intelligently.

    It’s smart that Jonas didn’t pull if you’re only looking at the scope of the top 3, but I think the point of that Tadej and Remco working together and expecting him to work was to secure the top 3 of the podium in TDF. Had they worked together, the 3 of them would have likely secured the podium and vanquishing all the other GC challengers by creating a giant gap . If Jonas has been stupid enough to take the bait, Pogacar would have attacked as soon as he was isolated. Jonas is not concerned about anyone else besides Pogacar.

    Jonas was Karate Kid, Ali doing the rope-a-dope, and Rocky all in one, taking the punches and being the hunter, not the hunted. He has to play it that way because he's the underdog due to his injury, and his team is brilliant in adapting to the reality of this year's situation.

    Vingegaard 's goal was achieved, he wanted to arrive on the first rest day without losing to many time ,now if is shape continues to improve, on the big climbs is the terrain where he can play his card ,but when he doesn't have competition since his crash on April the 4th (stayed 14 days in the ICU )he isn't sure how good will be is performance by end of the 2nd week and 3rd week, because he knows those are the stages that could decide the tour and the podium, with a bonus on the last stage, a ITT with more than 33km which includes a mountain category 2 in the race !! He is forced to race day after day and take a look at shape, and start from there!!
