- Using races as training can be a helpful strategy, and it's important to have clear goals that you want to achieve or things you want to practice. I ran a marathon recently, hoping to learn some lessons for my upcoming ultramarathon, but I made an epic mistake. Have I learned anything?!

I love using local races as long run training. I've finally just allowed myself to enjoy the first 2-3 miles at whatever pace, letting the excitement and camaraderie carry me along. Then I try to scale it back and pay attention to my HR. I'm usually chatting, and often thought that if I'm talking, i can't be pushing too hard... but my natural, too-fast cruise speed results in an HR of 165. Fine for a 10k, not so much for a 50k! 😂
😂 excatly! When I look back at my data and see I'm riding the mid-160's for a few a few miles, I kick myself - it felt so good at the time! Not so much 20-miles in 🤦♂️
I've got this same local marathon coming up soon, and I really am going to take it easy ... I think. Let's see if I've learned anything at all this year 🤷♂️
Good luck with your training 😊🙏
Hi Chris, thanks for the videos, I'll be volunteering at Chester 50 so I might see you there and give you extra cheers! I also have the UTS coming up.
Hi Mathias, that's great! Definitely give me a shout if you see me at Chester. I'm looking forward to it; I've heard it's a beautiful run. Are you doing the 50 at UTS?
@@ChrisBranch it's a nice country side run yeah, however in March it's still a bit grey and very muddy. The best bits are along the river Dee and the Sandstone trail. UTS I'm shooting for the 100M :p
@@mathiasdonoso5768 Wow, massive respect. 100-miles in that terrain terrifies me. Maybe one day, but I need some more mileage in my legs first. Good luck with your training, and I hope to bump into you at Chester 🙏
@@ChrisBranch Thanks, you too! Hope you enjoy Chester, GB Ultra runs smooth and friendly events.
I have the Dublin Marathon on Sunday. needed this. reminder I need some socks!!
😂 good luck in your marathon! And happy hunting for comfy socks 😉🙏
@@ChrisBranch Thanks, Big Fan of your videos !
@@paulkerr3863 thanks Paul, I really appreciate that 🙏
The only issue I've had with vaseline is when you use it on your nipples and it leaves oily, visible circles on your shirt. Using tape instead fixes that one. I have used nut butter recently and that is good too. Injinji socks are awesome 👍🏻🏃♂️
Thanks Mark, I'll avoid the vaseline on the nips 😂
Vaseline is absolutely fine.
Been using it for 45+ years, 20 of these also as a soldier.
No blisters EVER !
I repeat: No blisters EVER !
Chafing many times from equipment, but never from clothing. And when having wounds, vaseline is also a help.
Nut Butter is some US hippie idea.
😂 that's hilarious. I haven't actually tried the nut butter yet but I really appreciate your experienced thoughts on Vaseline. I was fine with it, so I will stick to the tried and tested from now on, and not that hippie stuff 😉
By hippie stuff, you mean the stuff people have been using for hundreds/ thousands of years, before they replaced it with cheaper chemical alternatives? 😂 Thanks for your service, and I'm glad the vaseline has worked for you, but that doesn't mean there's not better alternatives out there. 😉
Maybe should also bear in mind that natural ingredients don't suit everyone. I have to use chemical stuff because I'm allergic to that miracle ingredient - coconut oil!
