The number of muslims who speak Deccani Urdu is suprising when you travel across the North of Karnataka and into Hyderabad.
Indians have a colorism complex. They automatically respect people fairer than them
We found the same in Kolkata. If out exploring you will get approached by people either wanting to sell you something, take you to a friends business or just wishing to say hello and find out where you are from. The tricky bit is working out which they are quickly :-)

Hosapete is a city known for industries, in Karnataka Karl bhai, not a rural area.
Also, fun fact: I don't know about foreigners, but Railways prohibits Indian rail enthusiasts to shoot photos/videos of locomotives in the station premises, sighting security issues.

And Karl when your in platform you can always ask RPF cops where your coach will halt. Just tell them your train & coach number. They have the list of all trains updated on daily basis. Tough is for their other official purpose, but they don't mind helping.

Karl, Its actually A Train Junction, Junctions are a bigger train stations
Same rules apply here in South Africa. When on trains especially, dont put anything in your back pocket. Alot of the regular train riders here, put their backpacks on the front of them. As pick-pockets will open ur bags zip especially when all crampet together at peak times

We recently travelled 9 hours on the train from Kolkata north to Jamalpur. Seats one way and sleeper on the way back. 9 hours was as long as I would do in seats. The overnight sleeper was very good. You sleep in your clothes but you get blankets and pillows. Quite comfortable actually. We all locked our bags and padlocked them the to the bunk under blankets. If you are starting from a decent hotel I recommend asking your hotel if they can make up a food parcel for the trip. Some trains have an Indian style WC at one end and Western style WC at the other. You often get approached by people when out and about in India. Frequently they want to sell you something but you do also get people who are just curious to know where you are from. The trick is working out which they are. Personally I'd steer clear of the dogs (fleas). For some trips a taxi is a good idea. We took one from Delhi Airport to Agra, a trip of about 3 hours. If you are in a small group to share the cost its a lot more convenient than going into Delhi to get the train.

RPF is Railways Protection Force governed under Central ministry. Not Rashtriya police rifles. They are specially stationed to provide security assistance in indian railways.

It is wild to me how the train doors are opened and you can just stand there and look out-side. that would never be allowed in America and many other countries for safety reasons.
These are the older models of the train which doesn't have automatic open and close mechanism but in the new versions which are being produced, they have doors that open and close automatically. There are only a few new models that are running currently.
Newer trains have automatic doors. U cant do in that. But these are so fun to stand there and feel wind. It's amazing experience.

Hospet junction has changed quite in bit in the 20 + years since I went there. They have great Mysore Masala Dosai there. Good South Indian food in Hospet!
I had everything stolen on first Indian train trip. An Indian guy came and sat in the seat next to me and was wanting to give advice about where I should put my bags and said I had to put them above my head on the shelf. I started reading a book and looked round and my bag was gone along with the guy. It was my first experience traveling so was very naive, you live and learn etc being down and out with no money or passport in Mumbai for 3 days was interesting got 2 Bollywood acting jobs because I needed the money., had to sleep ruff on the sea front, Fun times looking back on it.😂

Having been a foreigner on indian trains, I wish that u would have empasized better how important it is (and how difficult it can be) to find your carrier. The trains miles long, and there would be no time to search for yr carriage.

Train travel in India is a must - I did it many times as a solo female traveler on Sleeper Class.

India is not different. It is glad to be in this country...even the traffic is funky in the country but that is what makes India a great place to live it. Wish you knew that how much pollution it is there in Delhi right now...would be great if you would visit the Rapid Transit in Delhi! I have been using it since I was little.

India is interesting but with wages so cheap, why dont they have a toilet cleaner?? They could hire a fulltime cleaner for a few rupees.
@@tubester4567 Yes that is indeed true lol, but the money is mostly spent here on infrastructure and improving it, as it is a rural station, they cannot have a toilet cleaner in the station as it it small...however there are staff to clean the toilets at major station and airports...sometimes even rural stations...plus India is big, according to the latest data, it has the largest population in the world and with more 50 million people travelling by rail, it is clearly uneasy to maintain the toilets. That is the reality.
Very good practical advice ,I travelled most of India by train in the late 70s & 80s, South India being far more benign than the North.
My only criticism is that you wisely avoided drinking the water, but seemed okay about train meals & food vendors on trains.
I never touched a bite of this food as the handling & preparation could be very uncertain & vary largely hygine Wise
I carried a bag with bread & canned cheese,I could ger freshly cooked omelette from certain stations.i used to carry powderd milk & make my own tea,

It’s changed a lot since then. Railway food is pretty good these days taste and hygiene wise
@@ChakraVart1 I'm a big fan of Indian food to this day, north Indian as well as south Indian. I loved the plate meals, dosa, vada, & the north Indian chicken, goat, I also loved the butter dhal fry with roti & curd. Yes I dare say India has changed massively in 30 + years!
