I recently spent MULTIPLES of that quote to do rod bearings on an E46 M3 (and a lot of preventative stuff you may as well do when doing that much work). Once that knock starts there's no saving the crank and that of course means full engine-out. $3K for damn near anything on an M car is a cheap repair. The car will be a steal if it ends up being sub-$10K, let alone sub-$8K.

Cheers mate. For my own interest to see how much these go for in the US, I did a quick search and even adding another $3300 on to what you've already paid for means you are still doing well with it. Of course, we know you will add whatever extra parts that is needed but still, for a car you like and you want to drive around in seems like a very decent deal. The thing is that the autel scanners will not tell you the correct codes for the s85, you must have ISTA , trust me i know all too well lol. If those are actual real vanos codes the oil line will fix it when you do the bearings maybe ....
Wow, I literally just got the same exact car, same year, same specs, same problems. I already pulled the cylinder heads off and am doing a vanos system overhaul. You need to check the pump, high pressure line to the adjusters, and the adjusters themselves.
waynester71 well for v10 Sport cars they are actually relatively cheap to maintain. You can not compare them to regular cars. I mean all the ferraris have these kind of maintnance costs.
They are not that fragile but people run them 8000 rpm all day, don't follow maintenance according to bmw, put cheap oil out of standards, cheap filters etc and spend all day hammering them sideways. What are people expecting? of course they gonna fail. I'm surprised the gearbox isn't blown too...probably the previous owners never did maintenance to it...it's a miracle the gearbox survived. I had 4 bmw's in all my life, always did their maintenance myself, always according to bmw, used bmw workshop manuals, recommended oils/filters, bmw insta D/P, eSYS for programming and errors etc. Never had 1 single failure in more than 20 years.
While your working on the motor i would highly recommend him checking the throttle body actuators you can rebuild them cheap from lol ebay. Mine were pretty shot but wasn't throwing codes yet. Just saving you a future headache.
Not as bad as I thought it would be. It's definitely in good hands now. Perhaps maybe you can have Mike detail it afterwards. As for the downshift paddle shifter, I think that the wizard just glued it back together on Tyler’s old M5. I’m sure that the ninja can figure out a similar fix for that
JR- I think an interesting car for you to acquire and work on would be a 2000-2002 Lincoln LS stick shift. First stick shift Lincoln in 50 years. As you may know, it was co-developed with Jaguar. Same platform as S-Type. I replaced a 1995 BMW 525i with a 2000 LS stick and put 150K plus miles on it before trading it on a 2008 Saab 9-5. BMW user here, since the late 80s, and when I had my last one, a 2008 318i, I decided it was the last one. They used to be nice, reliable, relatively simple cars, but they turned into a fucking nightmare, never again will I return to the brand.
Those BMW 5.0 liter V10s are a favorite of mine. A guy that I know makes headers for them but it takes an engine drop to install and the headers alone cost more than what JR paid for the car and the repairs with the car ninja.
That body is clean, I'm guessing though since it's from the same year range as the E90 3 Series that the car knows basically everything that has a wire going to it and is very unhappy when something doesn't match somewhere along there. Was a pain when I converted my E92 328i Wagon into a 335i, basically stripped them both down to nothing and did a complete swap of everything so the computer wouldn't know the difference. May not have had to do something that radical but I had to tear the wagon down to swap over the interior anyway so two birds one stone.
This comment will probably get lost, but I do hope you see it, John. When you do the oil change, put some MoS2 additive in the engine. Liqui Moly Oil Additive is the name in the Europe and it does wonders. It forms a layer on all surfaces and in case of an oil pressure drop or oil not being where it should be, it protects the engine. It's also good for slightly worn and vulnerable engines like yours is. I've been using it for years, both on the road and on the track and it's a must have for all my cars, both for engine and for gears.
Honestly man, I'm jealous. The E63 M6 became my dream car when it came out and still is. Congrats on the fairly clean M6 and if you decide to sell it for under 15k, I want to be first on the list lol.

Maybe have it look like a 2nd story from the outside for the neighbors ? Or is it just too expensive , or maybe you live in a development and they just won't let you ?
You need to keep a supply of cardboard ( appliance box sides ) on hand to put on the floor. And use cardboard flats ( beer flats ) to hold parts removed from the project. Keep the mess contained, throw the mess away.
I'm guessing this car's original MSRP ran into six figures. The 2006 to 2008 M6's in decent resale condition are still selling for good money. This Beamer has excellent potential, and with your skills and a few specialists backing you, I wouldn't be talking this down so much. Your initial instincts were good.

Such a shame how fragile these are, the M5 & M6 V10... Imagine how much they’d be worth ‘if’ they were bulletproof reliable!
