  • In this video we will be using Alias Autostudio 2020. You can also use Alias Surface for this workflow.
    This series is to help you guys see what goes on when I make a car exterior inside a design studio. How I take the sketches and the engineering data and I merge it into one cohesive model. For this project we will be using Hanbin's BMW DTM design, his photoshop tutorial can be found here

    My Alias preference set can be found here

    HandleBar3D: makes triangle surface
    Surface designers: we don't do that here
    just learned that while being apprentice in automobile industry. its hard for following steps like strak people and engineers to use triangle surfaces because the controlling of those surfaces is very difficult, as the cv rows go to 1 single point in one corner. I used to make a 4 side surface and cut the half of it off with a trim command. Anyway I understand that for the design process this is not vital, but good to know anyway

    Thank you for this showcase, you are one of the greatest guy on RUclips who explained Alias car modeling.Other guys just shows the starting point and final result.They skip transitions and guidelines CV's or surfaces.On one of your older video dedicated to Electra I left a comment regarding my Rhino learning(because Alias is best high-end tool but is not handy to me) there you recommend to me poligon modeling but that is not my type. Can I send you my wip project and you just tell me your opinion about this,just short .I understand you are super busy but I personally don't know other guy who is professional and he is ready to share his honest opinion about other people's work.Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    great job with your videos, keep making them.
    This may be a little weird and long-winded but I'm looking for a genuine career advice.
    I have a degree in automotive/transport design from a small university that I have graduated from back in 2015. While doing the course and several years after I was focusing on clay modelling side of the design process so I haven't really done much with Alias for a while now (apart from watching your videos that make me feel bad about my Alias skills). Since graduating I've had some additional industry standard training from a professional clay modeller to gain any possible edge and experience over other unexperienced clay modelers looking for a junior position. This additional training to me was very expensive and I had to pay for this training out of my own pocket because I don't have family that could support me financially. Saving that money took me a long time. Since then I have contacted all the industry contacts I had, registered with pretty much every recruitment agency that works with car companies with no luck. I've had a single interview with a British high end sport car manufacturer and I find breaking into the industry basically impossible if you're not from one of the major design schools. Moreover I recently spoke to some professional clay modelers with way more experience than me who can't find work in that field, so the chances of me getting a job as a clay or hard modeller are little to none.
    So for quite some time now I have been lost and just trying figure out what else I might want to do and what career to pursue. And considering that my current job is in CAD, basic stuff like Sketch Up and AUTO CAD, so I am thinking of a career in Autodesk Alias. I would describe my level of skill in Alias as neither great nor bad, it's average and I know that I would have a long way to go to get to a level like yours where people would actually bother taking a look at my portfolio. However there are a few things that make me hesitate with doing this, first being the high possibility that no one is going to see my portfolio to employ me. Second is time, right now I can only do maybe 10 hours per week to learn Alias due to my other commitments. The third one is time as well I guess, you see I am 30 years old and so I don't want to waste time and money learning something that won't benefit me in the future. And don't get me wrong, I am well aware that it's all up to me, and I am not lazy to put the work in. But at this point of my life I don't want to put all that work and effort in just to find out that the job market is too saturated as it is, like it happened to me with clay modelling. I guess I could say that about everything, but some job markets are way more saturated than others.
    Is this a good time to be looking for a CAD modeller job in the car industry? How do you think is the car industry going to change over the next decade, because I have heard that car companies want to adopt Autodesk Speedform to a greater capacity? Do you have any advice for someone in my situation?
    If you have read this far then let me just say thank you because you must be a very busy person. And if you do decide to reply, please be blunt and don't sugar-coat it

    • @HandleBar3D
      @HandleBar3D  4 года назад

      Hello, thanks for taking the time to write me this letter. I'm sorry you haven't been able to get into the automotive industry. Many of the questions you are asking have no real answer. Would putting in 10 hours a week in Alias eventually land you a job, sure maybe. I can tell you right now that they are way more cad jobs then they are qualified workers. I can also tell you their are many cad modelers who will never get good enough to be hired. Even though theirs many jobs their is still many people applying to those jobs and most of them aren't even close to getting hired.
      I don't know who is telling you speedform will take over the industry, even though it is a good tool, it wont replace the cad workflow. It has it's speed but it also has it flaws. I doubt anybody would hire a speedform modeler that isn't also a traditional cad modeler also. So even if lets say, your friend was right, I would move over to speedform myself and it would be fairly easy because of my CAD background.
      I don't know what the future holds for the automotive world, I don't know if the workforce will shrink in a decade or expand exponentially. I do know that regardless of what happens I will adapt and make my skill set valuable for that moment in time. I know that whoever puts in enough work to get into modeling does get into modeling. If you have seen my video on how I did it, I am self made myself, and I never stopped modeling until I got a job. We all have different paths in life, what worked for me might not work for you. I hope this helped

    Excelente video Raymundo! Muchas Gracias!
    Viendo tus videos me surgen un par de preguntas y si tienes chance me gustaría saber tu opinion
    1. por que a veces usas free y otras veces position para squares o rails?
    2.veo que cuando proyectas curves on surfaces haces mas uso de curves que de cos, recomiendas que sea siempre mejor curves?
    3. Que tolerancias usas?
    Gracias Ray saludos

    • @HandleBar3D
      @HandleBar3D  4 года назад +1

      1. Depende en la situación, me vas a tener que mandar el tiempo y te explico porque lo use.
      2. Porque con curvas puedo cambiar sus degrees rápido, o extender las más que un COS.
      3. Altas, como catia v5, .001 positional
