This imaginary animal is commonly spoken about in tall tales designed to scare tourists. While koalas are typically docile herbivores (and are not bears), drop bears are described as unusually large and vicious marsupials that inhabit treetops and attack unsuspecting people (or other prey) that walk beneath them by dropping onto their heads from above.[1][2][3][4][5][6]"

I was camped on the Darling River near Menindee New South Wales with some mates. The Ranger warned us of a sighting in the area so we posted a night watch with 2hr watches. My turn came up just prior to dawn, the final 2 hrs. I relieved Davo, who told me he was hearing something in the River Gum branches over our tents. I was on high alert as I'd had a close call with one as a younger man. I, too, could hear him moving through the branches. It seemed to be circling around our camp site, looking for an opportunity. I think our long handled shovel that we carried had it on edge. The movement increased, just prior to first light. I stoked the campfire and got everyone up. Just as first light broke, Nev spotted it with his powerful torch, but it kept its face away from us due to the blinding light of his military torch. As it started to descend the tree, we knew we had it licked. There was no way he could drop with this powerful torch, blinding his view of the things below. We surrounded the tree in an effort to see its eyes. I was poised with the shovel and covered in goose bumps, with legs like jelly, ready to swing with everything I had, knowing I might not get a second chance. ... Suddenly, Cooky yelled out. "I can see its eyes". He screamed to Nev, "kill the torch, its only a Koala" ...
How thankful and relieved we were after we had all confirmed that this was not the dreaded Drop Bear.
