High and Scary! I rode the Terrifying Sugar Loaf Mountain Cable Car in Rio de Janeiro

  • I did not think I'd have the nerve to try this really. I'm not great with heights and I'd already seen the cable cars going to and from the bottom station. They looked big and very high off the ground, dangling on their cable that stretched from one end to the other.
The cable ride is in two sections. The first takes you from the base station up to Morro da Urca hill where there are some fantastic views over the whole of the city really. Then, we're onto the longer (and higher) gondola, climbing higher to reach the top of Sugar Loaf Mountain.
I'll film the journey both ways so that you can experience the ride for yourselves. Let me tell you, I was glad to get off each time but I tried not to think about it and I definitely tried not to look down! I'll tell you how much it costs and we'll have a bit of a look around the mountain too - there's more to it than you might imagine.
Thanks as always guys for taking the time to watch my videos. All likes, comments, subs are massively appreciated and it really encourages me to make more content for you all to enjoy.
    Cheers for now.

I never appreciated how much spectacular scenery surrounds Rio! And you did a marvelous job in showcasing it. I had the pleasure of spending 3 weeks in Brazil (around Sao Paolo, Santos, etc) for work a number of years ago and loved it. The warmth and friendliness of the people was such a pleasant surprise. Thanks for bringing us along here!

Great video Mark! I’ve enjoyed discovering the Brazilian content. I too have a thing with heights, but I had a hot air balloon pilot tell me that with things like gondolas, hot air balloons etc the fear of heights usually doesn’t kick in as you tend to look out like you’re on top of a hill (which your brain assesses as safe) vs looking down as if you’re on the edge of a ravine. So I’d encourage everyone here with height aversions to give it a burl!!

Without doubt the best of the Rio set. You are right that if there was only time for one thing I would pick that one. I thought the relaxed spaces at the top of the mountain looked so cool. Like you, I could spend a long time there watching the comings and goings and drinking in the views.

Was up there in 2022. I’m not such a fan of heights, but didn’t find it too bad. I definitely wouldn’t have done the helicopter rides from the first stop. Btw you almost caught a plane landing when you were on the way up to the top. The little forest walks on both hills were probably the best bits.

Cheers Kevin! I’m not a fan either tbh but it seemed to go that quick, I didn’t really have time to think about it. Worst bit was stepping out I thought. I saw that plane landing then shortly after they reversed ops and that wasn’t as interesting unfortunately. Could’ve stayed up there ages though watching that 👍

Cracking view Gromit. I love gondola rides and it’s rare to see once over looking a city and not just any city, reminds me of the one up table mountain. All the ones i have been on were up mountains mostly away from urban areas. The best were in Chamonix giving views over Mt Blanc and the Peak to Peak in Whistler BC which takes you over a huge valley from one mountain top to another. The most dramatic in terms of weather was up to where they filmed Bonds look out scenes On Her Majesties Secret Service in Switzerland. There was a full on storm which meant going very slowly and quite a bit of rocking. The ticket woman thought I was mad as no views but it was an experience just before they closed it for the day on safety grounds. Glad you had a great time Mark and you shots were amazing.

Nope, there are dozens and more in the ski resorts of the Alps (and elsewhere) which are steeper and longer like Marmolada, Tofane or Aiguille du Midi to only name a few that came to my mind right now. Of course, if you're not a skier it may look a bit shocking to you.

I've never really thought of cablecars running to a timetable, but allowing say five minutes to load/unload at top & bottom, three minutes for the journey, a round trip should take under 20 minutes, so they should be able to fit in a 15 minute frequency with two gondolas 🚣‍♂️, but they probably allow a bit of leeway for crowds.

    • @LetsMakeaTrip
