I thought the rock hammer hidden inside revealed that The Warden never read his Bible and he just used religion as a smoke screen to hide his criminal activity. Anybody can memorize a few catchy quotes!
I agree Andy knew what a nasty hypocrite the warden was and that inside his bible was actually the best place to hide the hammer from him as he would not look there.
Though some of the symbolism is rather obvious, I really appreciate you pointing out that Andy supplying beer to his fellow inmates echoes Jesus' first miracle of turning water into wine.
If we didn’t have The Lion King, Pulp Fiction, Speed, or Forrest Gump this movie would’ve been an Oscar sweeper that year. 1994 was just too good of a year for movies.
I love that Andy’s best friend is Red, the “only guilty man in Shawshank”. He is also the only one in the prison to be redeemed at the end. 1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
This maybe a little too on the nose and overkill but Jeremiah 23:29 say's "Is not my word like fire," declares the LORD, "and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces?" The rock hammer in the bible is a hammer with in a hammer. It is the physical manifestation of a spiritual tool.
I think this is a great point which is supported by the context. The surrounding verses is the LORD telling us he is against the false prophets who say, 'thus says the LORD'.
Nobody is commenting on the fact that Andy told us how he was going to get out. One of the new library books is "The Count of Monte Cristo", which Andy points out, is a book about a prison escape. A Prison escape accomplished exactly as Andy accomplishes his.
Plan on touching on that in my third part. The Count of Monte Cristo or the Mountain of Christ is the only other book specifically referenced in the movie and it too is a prison escape movie that made allusions to story of Jesus
The Christian parallels of this film are never ending. Andy’s wife cheated on him which could represent the adultry Israel committed against God. The Bible says that while in the tomb Jesus descended into hell. This could be the tunnel of sewage Andy crawled through. Red is the color of sin. Red says he’s the “Only guilty man in Shawshank” After Andy’s escape “Red”, who once despised hope, finally just admits his sin to the parole board not trying to justify his actions in any way. It’s because of Andy(Jesus) that Red now has hope and meets him again in paradise, wearing white no less. Because Andy lives Red also shall live. Love these vids.
Only if Red finds his way. But your skipping the revenge aspect, of the movie. Andy cons, and commits fraud, he becomes a criminal, to escape and lay his wraith upon the man who has held him. When one looks for symbolism, one can find many connections to religion, philosophy, or mythology.
"Adam's wife cheated on him"? No, while Eve may have eaten the fruit first, it was Adam who failed to prevent the serpent from entering the garden in the first place when it was his job "to till" and "to keep" it. (Btw, those words are later used when describing the duties of a priest in Jewish worship.) It's better to say that both Adam and Eve (i.e., humanity) cheated on God and that they would continue to do so unless God himself entered humanity to save it (i.e., Jesus Christ).
@Julian Baxter If you put in the good faith effort in to understand to understand the means, it would be given to you. @Julian Baxter Youre free to do what you want. Especially if you dont believe it. But the thing is that your prejudice betrays your facade of dispassionate logic. Atstsebeth is a hebrew word that means both 'wound' and 'idol'.
Guy's, remember if Andy wasn't holding the book or then the Warden during the search it would have ended up being tossed onto the floor during the search, the first thing we see when the guard goes into the cell is him using his baton to knock all the books off the shelf onto the floor where the rock hammer would have probably popped out. It was a calculated risk but we already knew Andy was smart/clever.
As a pleb who just enjoys the face value of movies I could only pick up the obvious religious cues, not the underlying meaning so this is mind blowing.
Interesting. I understood the symbolism of the rock hammer in the Bible, but didn't think of Andy as a symbol for Jesus through the alcohol, and the exit of the tomb through the ressurection and the redemption of Red. This really gave a new light to this movie for me

Wow I love this film,so many things to see and feel on all levels, I never get tired of this film. Great to watch if your feeling hopeless and depressed
Wowowow! This was absolutely amazing. I can't believe I missed the Jesus symbolism of him giving everyone the alcohol, especially him sacrificing his comfort by being in the hole to bring everyone music. That line he said at the warden, man. Looking back it's crazy how really the acting is so good it can really be interpreted as both things, but at the time you figure he's just being subservient. He's just extremely clever and patient. What an incredibly dense and impressive movie.
Matthew 10:28 King James Version "And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul..." This is comparable to what they said in the movie, namely, "there's something inside they cant touch" Christ rose, so likewise we too will rise and thus life is just a waiting game and martyrdom is not to be feared (:
Great vid for Christians and non believers alike. I can't believe that I never noticed the opening book as the page opens...Exodus, the escape of the Hebrews from Egypt with Moses.
And also Red was like the theft on the cross who said I am guilty of my crime but remember me. And at the end Red did join Andy in a Paradise like island.
As a Christian and a movie guy, I always love too 100 IMDB movies. This was on top of the list. I watched it 4 times already before seeing this video. You are so articulate about explaining the meanings and the parallels of the Bible and the story of the movie. Thanks again.
A confident, self assured and accurate romp through a brilliant critique of both films. Yiur use of Alcatraz as a parallel is very insightful. Well done good and....well, you know the rest eh?❤
The warden is like some people who think they know the Lord but in reality are actually blind and don't realize that they've never been born again. He sees himself as being up front about his "faith" with others and promotes the Lord and the Bible. He is also confident in his knowledge of the Word as seen when he asks Andy about favorite Bible verses. When Andy responds with, "Watch ye, therefore, for ye know not when the master of the house cometh.", the warden comes back right away with, "Mark 13:35. Always liked that one." The warden may believe is tasked with a calling. To do his job and to be an example of salvation to a population he refers to at one point in the movie as 'Sodomites.' He believes his methods are right and wholly justified even when brutality of varying degrees is used to keep (his) order. The warden, like many others who attend church, do good works, and even pray, etc. is blind to his blindness. He only thinks he can see. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then I will profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. - Matthew 7:22-23. ...by their fruits ye shall know them. - Matthew 7:20. Peace.
In addition the 'Master of the house' quote also refers to God. That the corrupt warden should have been watching out for the 'Master' of the house when Justice finally catches up with him.
One very interesting detail I’ve completely understand is that when Frank Morris and his “companions” escape from Alcatraz and that they leave behind the empty body points to the view of that when a soul has left the body, the body is nothing more but a shell of its former self.
Always was of a mind on every point here that Andy is positioned in the role of Jesus, Red that of Peter or Paul and the Warden the role of the Devil. That there is a connection there, though I'm not the most religious or strongest Christian especially as a child when I first saw this as a boy. I immediately caught on to these symbolic connections, only to become all the more convinced with age. Must confess was always amazed how few people caught the link here, or denied it (not trying to be snobby just always thought it obvious). This was a spectacular video.
@@johnhardman3 To be fair, there was a time-cut there. Don't assume the expose of the prison was published the next day. Andy had his packet to the newspaper mailed from the bank as he was leaving. I'm sure it took at least one day to get to the newspaper. Then extra time for the reporters to get the story together. The film never says it was the next day.
I dont know how many times i have watched these two shawshank videos, but it's great every time. The other one is called the hidden meaning of the shawshank redemption
After Andy gave his speech on the power of hope, Red tried to dissuade him of thinking of such folly. Red actually told him not to believe in such SHITTY PIPE dreams. Haha
The Hammer spot is carved at beginning of chapter Exodus. Probably well known, but haven’t heard it mentioned specifically. I do see now it is mentioned at very end.
Your content is really speaking to me. I love movies, and ive been trying to find god for the first time in my life. Im not sure what im trying to say but i think your content is awesome.
Andrew is an anagram for Warden, Wander, & Warned. In Greek A = alpha w = omega Andrew created a phantom to go along with his escape plan. Just like Andrew the Apostle translated and created the Greek bible. Jesus is St. Andrew's alter ego. Andrew means "manly" yet does not mean man, but he is like a man. Andrew is the hidden truth, many will come in jesus name claiming they are jesus yet the truth is that jesus is the false messiah and all those who claim to come in his name are the antichrists. Jesus is a play on words from greek mythology Jupiter the king of planets is also called Zeus, so Jupiter + Zeus = Jesus... X Mark's the spot Andrew was the only one crucified on an X and the first to "meet jesus" he's also called Prōtoklētos meaning the first called to christ consciousness.... because I AM here and I know what I've written.
That interpretation is fascinating to me, more so because my understanding of the hollowed out Bible used to be the same as Wisecrack's. Thanks for the video! But still one thing doesn't quite fit the "Andy-knew-the-Bible-very-well"-notion if you ask me: Shortly before the movie's twist, in a conversation with Red, Andy claims that whatever he's done wrong in life he has already paid for ("he" meaning Andy, not Red, just to clarify). And sure, I get it, his fate was horrific, he was falsely accused and thereby sentenced to serve many decades in prison - but from a biblical perspective, whatever wrongs he commited in life can never be paid for by himself, no matter how many decades he'd stay imprisoned, which is not to say that his two life sentences back to back were justified, I'm obviously talking about a bigger picture that goes beyond earthly life. So it's this particular statement (that all his mistakes were paid for by himself) he made that gave the whole plot and message a kind of "humanistic" flavour when I watched the movie. But maybe I misunderstood what he said, maybe he's not talking about a "bigger picture" (though that's how it sounded to me) but merely about the particular injustice of this situation, like if someone was falsely accused of having crashed a car and had to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars because of it, and then said something like "whatever stuff I have damaged in my life (like broken a plate or something), all of it I have now paid for", they'd be correct, without sounding self-righteous. Might be a bad example, I don't know, I'm just not sure if I really got Andy's statement about his own guilt.
option one: Andy is saying he’s paid for the sins of mankind, as an allegory for Christ, through his suffering on Earth, for sins he did not commit… the prison representing our fallen world, not Hell. option two: you’re thinking too hard. it’s not a one-to-one allegory for the Gospel, Andy is just meant to be an inspirational, Christ-like figure. I do think the cell being empty, just like Jesus’ tomb, is the strongest evidence for this interpretation, though 🤷🏻♂️
If you notice of the cut out part in Exodus, the part where its not cut out starts at Exodus chapter 2, verse 10 --- the part where Moses grows up then has to flee from Egypt.
Have you ever thought about doing audio commentaries during full movies? There is a number of ways you could do this. If you started a Patreon page you could literally include the entire movie itself in the video. Or, you could mark vocally in the video when to start (even on youtube) and allow people to watch the films on a blu ray or just another window with your commentary as the audio. I think it would be really cool to hear your insights for the duration of a film as it happens.
Another way you could explain the hollowed out Bible is it represents the warden's hollow usage of it, he reads the Bible but does not act upon what he has read

That line he said at the warden, man. Looking back it's crazy how really the acting is so good it can really be interpreted as both things, but at the time you figure he's just being subservient. He's just extremely clever and patient. What an incredibly dense and impressive movie.
Phenomenal analysis man!
Archetypes of Jesus and the Bible hit home very hard.
Try this for some Jung archetypes

I would love to see you make a similar video on “The Matrix”.
I really enjoyed this.👍🏼
Matthew 10:28 King James Version
"And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul..."
This is comparable to what they said in the movie, namely, "there's something inside they cant touch" Christ rose, so likewise we too will rise and thus life is just a waiting game and martyrdom is not to be feared (:
Excellent analysis and great narrative voice!!
Impressive set of connections!
I have watched the film many times but never really caught that symbolism.
Thank you for pointing it out.
That's cuz there is no symbolism in this movie, dumbass.
@@MrParkerman6 Prove it.
Except, No!
You crushed it. Kudos
As a Christian and a movie guy, I always love too 100 IMDB movies.
This was on top of the list. I watched it 4 times already before seeing this video.
You are so articulate about explaining the meanings and the parallels of the Bible and the story of the movie. Thanks again.
Never knew about the connection between those two movies. Very interesting.
nice, we need more of you on youtube keep on.
Always liked that one."
The warden may believe is tasked with a calling.
Peace.
Thank you very much your videos have given me much hope. Have a very good day.
In addition the 'Master of the house' quote also refers to God. That the corrupt warden should have been watching out for the 'Master' of the house when Justice finally catches up with him.
One very interesting detail I’ve completely understand is that when Frank Morris and his “companions” escape from Alcatraz and that they leave behind the empty body points to the view of that when a soul has left the body, the body is nothing more but a shell of its former self.
it sucks that I can only give you one like.
I want you give you at least 100!
Thank you!
This is the best and most accurate analysis.
And the truth will set you free.
Shawshank redemption > > > Escape from Alcatraz
"Cool Hand Luke" is also a great prison movie
Imo
You just blew my mind man... and here I was just thinking it was a good movie... now I see it's a great movie... thanks man
Shawshank redemption is my favourite movie 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
I love your work. Great job!
Also potentially. The rock hammer's shape could signify the cross
Thank you. That was a very revealing look at a movie we all love but didn't quite grasp all the implications and innuendos.
That's cuz there is none, dumbass. This is all just made up bullshit.
Stellar Analysis.
Thank you! I love your channel!
Why didn't he just place the rock hammer inside the hole he was making. That would've been a safer spot
What if the hole wasnt big enough to hit it yet, where do you hide it?
Great video. I'm not a big fan of prison movies but this analysis made me want watch to Shawshank's Redemption.
This movie is my all-time favorite and now with this analysis I love it even more, thank you for this video, subscribe.
Mind blown
You nailed it. A+
He wasn’t reading it, he was studying!
Your pronunciation of Ecclesiastes is quite interesting
Different book. Ecclesiasticus is also known as Sirach and is part of the apocrypha
Logos Made Flesh Gotcha lol makes more sense now
Different book. Not in the Bible...which is strange because this video is about the Bible.
Actually, it is in the Bible that many Christians use.
By many you mean "The Roman Catholics only". Most Protestant religions still rely on either the KJV or the NIV.
Great analysis. I never noticed the making the wine reference before. Awesome.
Nice analysis
Wow, amazing insight into this. Love it.
Awesome, thank you!
Wisecrack is a joke.
That pun wasn’t on purpose.
Andy sure was lucky that the Warden's SUIT fit so well even though Andy towered over the warden.
Magic, like the overnight exposure of the warden's activity in the newspapers.
"Any Questions?" My Answer: How did Andy make the perfect slot for the hammer to fit in the bible and make it close? Is it even possible?
Its only a FILM my friend. But! it does suck you in ill admit...............
A man spends 20 years planning his escape from prison and succeeds and you ask how he got the hammer into the book. #facepalm
I dont know how many times i have watched these two shawshank videos, but it's great every time. The other one is called the hidden meaning of the shawshank redemption
AND MORGAN FREEMAN IS GOD, ALSO BECAUSE HE WAS GOD IN BRUCE ALMIGHTY
no , he was gawds mother , because he was a virgin .........
God murderer
This really opens new perspectives Andy crossing the water ditch in the end is like crossing the red sea also.
Pretty sure he hid it inside the Bible because the Bible was the one thing he knew the Warden would never confiscate but... sure.
learned more from this 5 min video about the bible than 10 years of catholic school.
Love Wisecrack, but too many of their conclusions are anti-god when they shouldn't be.
Honestly, the most amazing part about the Shawshank Redemption is that I can turn on TBS at any time of any day and that movie will be playing.
After Andy gave his speech on the power of hope, Red tried to dissuade him of thinking of such folly.
Red actually told him not to believe in such SHITTY PIPE dreams. Haha
Great video Matt
"...Andys first miracle, like jesus', is an abundent surply of alcohol."
I mean.... yea?
water into wine his first miracle
The Hammer spot is carved at beginning of chapter Exodus.
Probably well known, but haven’t heard it mentioned specifically.
I do see now it is mentioned at very end.
It’s mentioned at the end
GREAT
Your content is really speaking to me.
Your videos are so good
The audio
The editing
And what you are saying seems so complex to me but i can keep up and understand it hahahah
If you notice of the cut out part in Exodus, the part where its not cut out starts at Exodus chapter 2, verse 10 --- the part where Moses grows up then has to flee from Egypt.
Awesome... No further explanation of my findings. Just... Awesome...
One of my favorite movies 🙏♥️🙏
Wow the symbolism here is amazing, never even thought about it before
