Yeah, Battletoads on gameboy is not a port of the NES version. However, the NES version was actually ported to the gameboy, but it was renamed Battletoads in ragnarok's world.
The NES original had questionable color choices in parts but was honestly quite impressive otherwise, fairly large sprites, actual parallax scrolling, amazing music and beefy sound effects, and nice variation in gameplay. I agree that it's almost impossibly difficult in the later levels, but that's true of many NES titles. I think you were actually too nice about the Amiga port, though, as the graphics looked almost identical to those on the NES but without the parallax scrolling. And LMAO, the CD32 couldn't have music and sound effects despite having the capability of redbook audio! What a crock of shit! The Game Gear port is nice but it moves too slow, it's a shame really because it's good otherwise. The Mega Drive port is probably the definitive version, with the best graphics, gameplay, and arguably sound (I prefer the NES music though).
The Amiga had a lot of crappy ports because porting a massive game to an old machine with one guy working from home in 2 months was a shockingly common occurrence. The machine was more than capable of doing a decent port but publishers prioritized quick turnover and pretty screenshot potential for ads and boxes.
You left out Battletoads in Ragnarok's World for the Game Boy, which is a port of this Battletoads game. I suppose you got confused with the fact that the Game Boy has a game called "Battletoads" with the same cover art but that's a different game, more like a "Battletoads 2". That's why sometime later when they decided to do a conversion of this game, they had to retitle it and give it another cover art. Anyway, as an avid Battletoads fan thanks for doing this. Maybe you should do Battletoads Double Dragon as that one has four versions and it's an interesting one too, especially covering the differences between the Mega Drive and SNES versions. And one recommendation if you don't like these Battletoads games: please play Battletoads Arcade, the best game of the series. Maybe you change you'll mind with the toads.
@@MVC2fan1 Read again and read well this time. I mean Battletoads in Ragnarok's World for the Game Boy. That's NOT a different game to this one. "Battletoads" for the Game Boy. That is. Is it that difficult to read and understand what I just said le simply do your homework informing yourself about this series?
@@RetroCore This is because of the peculiar way of handling things at RARE at that time. The Game Boy development back then was handled by Paul Machaceck. When RARE developed the original NES game and approached Paul to create a Game Boy counterpart, Paul refused to create a simple port because he wasn't motivated to it, and instead opted to take his own vision creating a Game Boy Battletoads game. This seemed fine at RARE, so he did it that way. But then they marketed that game exactly the same as the NES game, with the same title and cover art, instead of standing it out from the NES game which is what they should have been. Sometime later, RARE insisted about taking the NES game to the Game Boy and this time Paul Machaceck agreed, so given that there was already a distinct Battletoads title on the Game Boy disguised as "Battletoads", they had to forcely rename it as "Battletoads in Ragnarok's World" and change the cover art, effectively marketing as a different game when it was actually the original. It's easy to have the confusion as a result. The Game Boy is and was actually going to be the system with almost all the games in the series, as it also had a version of Battletoads Double Dragon and also has a reportedly complete but unreleased version of Battletoads Arcade, dubbed Super Battletoads.
I never questioned why random space invaders came outta nowhere and stole my life when I was a kid. When I see that part now I think it's hilarious in a trolly kinda way.
Not sure if anyone mentioned this, but the Rare Replay version of this on XBox One (and the JP and EU releases of the original game) fixed a game-breaking multiplayer bug on Stage 11 - Clinger Winger. If two players were playing, the second player would somehow become immobile and always die to the Hypno-Orb boss (non-attacking physical contact is instant death). So the remainder of the level had to be done solo.
Speaking of Battletoads, I just remembered. There's this arcade place about an hour away from where I am that contains a bunch of retro arcade games and one of them has a Battletoads arcade PCB inside a Final Fight cab for some reason. This is actually the ONLY game in that place that had this weird accident. (Not to worry though, I have an Arcade1Up cab of Final Fight in my house)
@@NB-1 dude i never said the amiga was Bad it was just a joke, if i was comparing stuff like shadow of the beast the Sega génesis ports are pure garbage
Sorry but I am a professional game programmer and an Amiga owner/coder and I read the MegaDrive developer docs and Lionheart would be an absolute piece of cake for the machine. Lionheart was an achievement for sure but there is nothing in it that the MegaDrive/Genesis cannot do better. I love my Amiga but that will not prevent me from being objective about its capabilities. 😉
Also, quick tip: You can dash in this game by double tapping left or right. Doing this can also make you use different attacks while dashing. This can be useful for crowd control in the beat em up segments.
Battletoads was a mixed bag. The graphics were up and down (some levels looked very good, others not so much - questionable colour choices sometimes). The controls were a bit floaty but you did adapt. What you can't criticise is the variety on offer though...starting off as a basic beat em up it soon shifts into a pretty varied game. The snakes level was pretty clever. It was a hoot in 2 player as well even though you never got past the bike section.! :) It was a big game too - the furthest I got was a vertically scrolling section that had springboards and poisonous clouds. It has a really annoying boss once you reached the top I was never able to beat - there were a couple more levels after that though...I got an awful lot of play value out of it that's for sure. I have the MD version which is nice and the difficulty is toned down but its presentation doesn't feel as polished overall. The SNES game - Battletoads in Battlemaniacs is probably the best Battletoads game.
(before video) played this in the arcades and played the NES port. Both are really high on the overall difficulty scale, both for very different reasons. Also, yes, the AVGN did review the NES port, with Kyle Justin. 1:26 They're not a rip-off of TMNT. They're a parody. 2:54 This part in two-player is absolutely atrocious. Just ask the AVGN. lolz 3:44 Same with this section. Brutal in two-player mode. Battletoads & Double Dragon is really good. I'd recommend that to anyone.
While I could never finish this game back in the day (I havent played it in well over 25 years, I supposed I should give it another go) I still rather enjoy it and love most things about it. I also love that it is distinctly a Rare game, much like other games from other popular companies always had a tell that seemed to brand it from a particular company, usually music and sound effect style. Anyhow, its mercilessly hard, but I don't think it sucks at all. Also HARDEST PAUSE MUSIC EVER.
They (Rare) finally released ARCADE version of BattleToads in 1994, published by Electronic Arts. That was THE BEST version of all ! Unfortunately, there were no home conversions at all :(
Amiga was a great machine and a powerhouse for the time, however I agree that there are way too many bad arcade and console ports on it. The machine shined mostly when games were created for it and in some arcade ports.
I agree that the Amiga was great. IMO very few arcade ports were good though, since most of them where developed before 91/92 where developers started focusing more on actually using the Amiga chipset. Most are ports where the Atari ST was the lead platform, unfortunately. There are a few exceptions like Rod Land and Pang but they are few and far between.
The Master System version is a port of Battletoads in Battlemaniacs for the SNES. So it's a different game, despite the fact that it takes on several similar levels, as it's a sort of sequel-remake plot-wise I agree it shouldn't be included. The Game Boy version, that is, the one titled Battletoads in Ragnarok's World, should have been included though. But I suppose he got confused with the other Battletoads game which was marketed with the same title and cover as the NES one but was actually a different game.
To be fair though, he usually doesn't have enough time to get used to all the things in a game because he makes videos playing tons and tons of ports of a specific game every time within a week (and STILL needs enough time to make other videos). It's quite impressive how he's still making constant episodes actually.
I really like when you provide commentary. Battletoads is good on all the systems honestly. No, they are not easy games by any means. However, i still fully enjoy playing them. I wish you had played these when released. I think you would get that nostalgic feel and how you say "get stuck in".
I totally know how you feel about the very first game in the Battletoads series, since I never actually played the original NES game until I played it on "Rare Replay" for the Xbox One a couple of years ago, and I was even able to buy a copy of the Sega Genesis version to add to my collection shortly after.
I rented this once... Like all other near end-of-life NES games, the music and graphics were way more advanced than previous 8-bit games but the difficulty was jacked way up to the point of being almost unplayable. I agree about what you said about the Amiga (and ST), those computers should have far better games made originally for them (ie Psygnosis & Bitmap Bros.) instead of these crappy arcade/console ports.
I bought Battletoads on the NES when it was new. I was allowed to get a game that day and that seemed like the best game in stock at the time. I never found the toad characters appealing, but I was excited for a beat-em-up. And I liked it at first, and for a while. I agree with your criticisms. I did play the game quite a bit, but it was the gameplay variety -- some styles I just couldn't stand -- and the crazy difficulty in spots that made me decide one day to just say never again.
I don't think there is any CD based system other than the CD32 where you at times have to choose between music and sound effects (If my memory serves me well Lotus Trilogy was affected by this as well). And in some cases there is no music at all to select (See Banshee). Shame on Commodore for licensing those shitty cash grabs. And, yes, unlike floppy disc games CD games were actually licensed by Commodore (they required a fee).
This is because the Amiga CD32 version is a straight port of the shelved Amiga version which was brought from the dead to be released in 1994 along the "new" Amiga CD32 version. They didn't bother to do any tweak to it.
@@WeskerSega Again, shame on Commodore for allowing this crap. I wonder what people would think of Fujitsu if they had ever allowed a game without soundtrack to appear on the FM-Towns! That would be unthinkable.
Later Battletoads games would improve onto the beat em up mechanics, which would make sense as the NES original only had like 5 ish levels where you can beat stuff up (and even then, some were in segments of a level). Unfortunately, it seems like the 2020 reboot will not improve anything in the beat em up gameplay....
Retro Core UPDATE: It has gotten a lot better according to the reveal trailer. Unfortunately, I'm still not keen on the art style of the game. Rash looks fine, Pimple is... okay, and Zitz looks pretty bad, but Dark Queen looks absolutely terrible. Overall, it's a definite improvement, but I'm not sure if I would play it...
A friend had Battletoads on the NES, and I know I never beat it. We played quite a bit, and I'm not sure if he beat it, but his copy was the last time I gave the NES version a chance. I did rent the Genesis version one weekend later on, and it seemed to be less frustrating. Either way, the original Battletoads is simply "okay" in my book, not great but not horrible. I did like Batletoads-Double Dragon more, though I've only played the Genesis version of that. That arcade Battletoads game though was a whole lot of fun, especially with a couple of friends.
The graphics on the NES version are decent for the machine. The higher spec machines don’t really add much. I had an Amiga back then but I have no fondness for it unlike my consoles.
That shoot'em up section in Amiga version..and people thought swimming level from TMNT was hard (With i don't get BTW, i personally never found swimming that hard, you just had to took your time, and you could make it) Funny thing is, TMNT had Punk Frogs, they first appeared in TV series in 1988.
As an American I don't have any nostalgia for the Amiga but I can still appreciate old systems I didn't have growing up [Master System for example]. I just don't understand all the Amiga defenders. If you have nostalgia for it that's understood. But when so many ports are so bad I don't get it. It can't even do a decent port of a NES game. And having to choose between sounds or music? Wack. To clarify I think the Amiga has nice original games for it but it eats a bag of dicks when it comes to ports. Generally.
I'm thinking it's a sort of "missed potential" defense. A bog standard A500 had the chops for excellent arcade ports, aside from lackluster controller options, but those special chips weren't easy to utilize, and the audio being wave based, not FM synth, took a lot of memory. (A "expanded memory detected, both sfx and music are available" is a familiar sight on many Amiga ports.)Things you can work with, if you're quite familiar with the hardware, but few devs were. IIRC.
Awww, terrible mistake, you missing add the gameboy version "Battletoads - In Ragnarok world", this is the port of nes version is the same game, but single player
"I dont like Battletoads" *TMR wants to know your location* :P Well the fact that you dislike many Amiga games is by now well known. And I dont disagree, it has got a lot of bad games. But you have to admit that Amiga has got some really good titles. I spent hours playing on Amiga, and I still have the system with some software. We already talked about it, and about how much I'm waiting for Rick Dangerous episode. The only thing that really is problematic to me right now is the right cable to connect it. I have got a huge CRT monitor, and maybe a friend of mine could give me his old one, but those do use VGA connector. I do have an adaper for the 9-pin connector used at Commodore monitor, as well as the original monitor, but its dead since around 2003. I guess I'd have to sacrifice one of the Famiclone controllers and re-wire yet another adapter haha. Plus hey - it was a personal computer after all, and it also found some use in writing, translating and even music learning. At least in my case. Sometimes I find it quite nostalgic, that Commodore was one of the last manufacturers of the computers as a whole machine. Sure, nowadays you still have many brands manufacturing the computers, but those are meant to use either Windows or Linux systems, not their own ones, plus upgrading and changing the components is much easier today. A lot easier. Those nights spent on installing drivers, manually changing clock speed ... Not really looking forward back to this ! Oh well there is still Macintosh. But I don't think I'd ever become their fan.
First time I've heard about Battletoads on Mega Drive. I call Mandela effect on that one. lol I remember the first Battletoads for Mega Drive being "Battletoads & Double Dragon" which wasn't really a bad game.
Battletoads really could have been a bigger deal had the game designers not went completely overboard with the difficulty level. All the credit in the world to them varying the gameplay, but had they stuck to just the beat'em up and vertical tunnel levels, the game would have been more accessible and less of a hair pulling nightmare. And it's like every sequel to the game series they just couldn't stay away from those bad vehicle based levels. The arcade game is the best of the bunch, though that's not saying much.
Purchased the NES version on launch date Mark. By far, the most challenging game i ever played. But sure had a blast losing all the time for sure bro. 8^) Anthony..
No doubt it's one of those games where you had to be there to appreciate. Kinda like Metroid or Golden Axe where if you played it back then you would have thought it awesome, but if playing for the 1st time nowadays you'd say what the hell is with the stiff Golden Axe controls? So it's one of those games you have to say "well that's all there was" or "given at the time back then" type of games🤔
The NES game looks amazing for NES standards... Saying it looks ugly? The first level admitly is ugly, but all other levels are MAJORLY PARALLAX SCROLLING GLORY!
I played the NES version of this game back when. I remember liking the graphical gimmicks like the parallax scrolling, but otherwise hated this game. Not sure either what all the hype was/is about. Battletoads? More like Buttholeturds.
I played the one with Double Dragon on nes, replayed i recently and it was shite...The arcade version of Battletoads was amazing and underrated, never saw it in the arcades but had loads of fun with it on mame, ace gameplay, and graphics...and gore:) I'm a big amiga fan but it's unplayable.
This game (and all of its ports) were stupid populer with their brutal difficulty & 2-Player coop being key selling features. Like 99% of games (and other media) we're most fond of, people who weren't there at the time will never have an emotional connection to it.
What I don't like about Battletoads is that most of the game is all about different gameplay styles but not succeed on any of them. Most are one-hit deaths too. It is interesting in that regard but for me, not a great game.
There were so many franchises 'inspired' by Ninja Turtles around that time. Biker Mice From Mars, Buck O'Hare and Wild West Cow Boys of Moo Mesa come to mind. It's not just the games industry that endlessly recycles ideas and runs them into the ground but they are up there with the most egregious offenders when it comes to making often inferior knock-offs to wring out every Penny they can possibly get.
Bucky O'Hare the game and cartoon may have been released because of the TMNT hoopla, but the comic that inspired them premiered the same month and year (May 1984) as the first issue of TMNT, created for Continuity Associates' Echo of Futurepast #1 by Larry Hama and Mike Golden). I remember having that book, and quite liking it (the book also had stories by Neal Adams, who published Echo, and Arthur Suydam). I still have the First Comics color collection of the first three TMNT comics, so there's that too :)
Played the NES version of this game back in about 1991 or early 1992 and had only seen and played up until the second stage. I bought my own copy of the game a few years ago. I think Battletoads is a good game. The Genesis version is way better, better graphics and soundtrack.
I've always liked the NES soundtrack. Has the same, eh, palette as Wizards and Warriors 3. Fun tunes all in all. Surprised to CD32 version didn't have sfx and music. Should be very much capable of both. Crappy ports didn't kill CD32, dunno if was ever alive,... But certainly didn't help. :(
I was never much of a fan of Super Battletoads on the SNES either. Some excellent background graphics, but those same floating, slippery sliding control mechanics.
@@bhirawamaylana466 It will also come to Windows PCs like all Microsoft exclusives do now. Xbox owns RARE (who made the original games) and have the rights to their properties including Conker, Banjo-Kazooie, Perfect Dark, Battletoads, Killer Instinct, etc. Just type something like "battletoads xbox one gameplay" here on youtube and you'll get several videos.
im loved Amiga back in its days. to been fair: This game also have one of the worst reviews seen in Amiga magazines. Amiga Power example gave it 9%, cd32 even lower (6%). Its a complete joke of the game and not evven cd audio was used. im did newer liked this game at all! Amiga games is best with games designed for it in mind.
A flawed classic. The soundtrack is amazing. In Brazil back then we had this Nintendo clone variant called Dynavision which had a headphone jack and volume control. The first I stopped the gameplay to only appreciate the music was with this game.
I still have my Dynavision 3. I had a copy of this game and managed to finish it in about 2 months, even with the crappy Dynavision joystick. And I'm not even the best player among my friends. Years later I bought a original Gradiente NES and a original copy of the game, managed to finish on the first try. To me the Battletoads fame of being too difficult is kind of unjustified, because it is just one of those games where once you know the enemy/scenery pattern, it is relatively easy to evade the risks. Heck, I even can finish the infamous third stage (the bike), with the touchpad of the Steam Controller on a emulator :-)
I remember that some time ago I was one of the persons who considered first Battletoads as very good game. But couple of years ago I've changed my mind - mostly due to difficulty level, which is IMO exceeding any kind of "fair" challenge (there are entire levels which are not leaving even minimal margin of error or delay). But famous crossover Battletoads & Double Dragons - oh, this one is really good and much, much better than predecessor, in almost any possible aspect (more memorable bosses, more interesting level design, generally fair difficulty and "beatable" levels etc ). A shame that it wasn't released on PC at all - I would fight like lion to buy DOS (or Windows) version of Battletoads & Double Dragons :P
Now do Battletoads-Double Dragon: The Ultimate Team. This one has a lot of ports. Maybe you are right about being late for this game, as a fan of the game, I'd said that the best one is the original NES version, followed by the MD, then GB. I have mixed feelings about the GG version.
Solar Jetman aside, until Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, Ultimate Play The Game and later RARE, titles just left me cold, yet always drowned in praise from the games press. There was talk of an Atari Jaguar version of this, but who on earth would of wanted it?
@@cheek077 never a NES owner and only played Solar Jetman on emulation. My Ultimate Play The Game era was via friends ZX SPECTRUM, RARE when i bought a snes then N64
I first played this on an emulated Mega Drive, with a friend and we had a few laughs. Funny that in the end it's better on Sega. Wasn't there a SNES port (lookng different though)?
One of those rather you than me battles thanks Mark, all those games are just boring with lousy euro graphics and cardboard cutout fights, but that Amiga version is a insult to the hardware and is proper shite. I don't actually mind the arcade Battletoads game though due to the rampant scaling effects.
Don't worry Mark, I can't stand the Amiga either, and feel a lot of people overrate that machine. Once you play games on the FM Towns and Sharp X68000, the Amiga feels like a major step backwards. Also there are two Battletoad Gameboy titles, Ragnarok World is a bit of a port of the original Battletoads, while Battletoads itself is a completely different game.
Nothing stupid about it, they were both out at the same time, and the Amiga is heavily overrated, but you don't hear much positive talk about the X68000, despite it being much more well known these days. The Amiga however, is lapped up like sweet milk and touted as this super machine (it isn't). As the saying goes, if you have nothing nice to say, don't say it at all. If you are an Amiga fan, sorry to piss in your corn flakes, but it's my opinion. You don't have to like it, but accept it.
@@Bloodreign1 You are aware that the X68000 was 5 times more expensive than an Amiga 500 and wasn't really a mainstream gaming machine? Also it was often used a development machine for many of the japanese arcade games, so of course the ports are often prefect. It is as if you complain that a Volkswagen Beetle isn't as fast as a Ferrari although both were made at the same time.
I can complain when the Amiga is passed off as the best thing since sliced bread, when it isn't. And yes, I know about the arcade machine and Sharp X68K connection, Capcom would use it, and many arcade machines had the same guts within them.
I think Rare are very good at providing a game type that is wanted on the platform that wants it, in this case NES owners wanted more catoony beat em ps so Rare made one and they were happy. They probably didn't need to bother porting it to anywhere else though.
@SCM64 ENTERTAINMENT! I think MS just mothballed them didn’t they? Rare haven’t made a game for over ten years. They made some Kinect games then nothing. But the Stampers finally achieved their ultimate goal of having a solid gold toilet (probably) so I think they’re fine with it.
Ah, Battleturds. The original overhyped game. Completely unbalanced even by NES standards, and that's saying something. How this game got so much love when the system was saturated with quality action platformers. I'm also certain RARE didn't get Taito's permission to use those space invaders. That Amiga/CD32 game (and it's the same damn game on essentially the same hardware, no reason to treat them as separate ports) is atrocious. At least add two-button support like Factor 5 did for BC Kid.
The NES version looks far from crappy, it looks great, as a matter of fact. The first level is a bit bland, yes, but the later levels (which are shown in the video) look fantastic, the animation, the colors, the art style, the parallax scrolling, everything. The Amiga ports, on the other hand, are an embarrassment. The graphics are worse than the 8bit versions.
Maybe because by the time it came out I'd already been playing Mega Drive for 3 years and PC Engine even longer. So to me NES Battletoads has always looked nasty.
In my defense i was eight when i played this game on the NES lol so it's more of the nostalgia goggle effect for me i think. Or it's just linked to a really powerful memory and that's the best thing about games. Doesn't matter the game if it's special to you then it can be the worst game to everyone else :)
You don't need a defense. It's objectively a good game and one of the best on the NES, regardless of this guy's opinion of the game. It's easy to shit on a game you've never played and decide to give your opinion of it nearly 30 YEARS LATER.
You definitely are way too critical of the Amiga. However you are also right, that many ports pretty bad. As you know this was the case because the ports were often made by small teams or even a single person with no budget and very little time. Some things you repeatedly criticize, like one button controls or no sound effects plus music however are very annoying to hear in every video. This was the norm in home computers and it hardly bothered anyone. You really should get over it.
It bothered me because I had consoles since 1986. They always had more than one button and music plus sound effects as did Japanese computers. The 1 button control system was a product of a lack of innovation. Innovation that should have been obvious since practically every Arcade game from the mid 80s used 2 or more buttons.
@@RetroCore Yes, it was a lack of innovation, but that was mostly because the hardware manufacturers still stuck to the DB9 standard, probably because they didn't want to piss of customers. Software developers had to support the joysticks most people had, and these were just one button. Compare that to the PC market where even 10 years ago a lot of PC ports didn't have proper gamepad controls and you were forced to use keyboard and mouse for racing games, plattformers, puzzle games etc. Most PC gamers always claim superiority of the mouse and keyboard controls, but this only true for FPS games, strategy games etc. where luckily devices never made for gaming turned out to work really well.
Ok I know this is more of based off playing Battlemanics but Jesus this series is just awful to play, I mean I don’t like how it starts out like your standard beatem up, then the 2nd stage is well alright that’s a interesting change of pace (don’t like the Battlemanics take on it) and then the 3rd stage with the fucking hell spawn that is the Turbo bikes. which btw this is the only thing people even remember about the series is the damn turbo bikes and ngl it’s pretty tiring to hear that. Pretty much the 3rd stage the game show it’s true colors and you just have to rely on multiple gameplay styles that you obviously don’t know for sure how it works and you just have to be extremely good in order to survive and its utter bullshit that the games are design to be cheap as possible and playing 2 players is god damn worthless in the grand scheme of things. I mean I like hard games but not ones like this I’m a good Ghosts N Goblins (after the first game) player for crying out loud.
Double Dragon was great for its time but going back is tough, especially compared to Final Fight. I think its because the beat em up was still not a defined genre so Double Dragon has those annoying platform spots. And slowdown. That said I still enjoy it because of the music, variety of moves, and nostalgia.
I never liked the Ninja Turtles, maybe that's why I never thought of Battletoads as a rip-off. But I definitely love the game, one of my all-time favorites. I finished the game legit with no warp zones. It's hard, very hard, but doable.
Different game. It's a pseudo-sequel-remake which rearranges some levels of the original Battletoads game but it's still not that game, but another one. What should have been included though is Battletoads in Ragnarok's World for the Game Boy, as that's the same game bar some levels which were stripped.
@@RetroCore That's because Battletoads in Battlemaniacs is technically another game which simpy does a take of its own on conceptually similar levels. But overall it's not the same game. You did well not including it. It's Battletoads in Ragnarok's World for the Game Boy what should have been included.
Your criticisms of Battletoads on NES were jarring for me as someone who grew up playing it. The game was such a massive hit here in the US that we got an animated cartoon of it for a short period. To say the graphics aren't good means you didn't make it past the first few levels let alone the Jet Bike level lol. Either way appreciate the review and your input. I do agree though those Amiga ports are an insult to Rare who started this series in the first place.
When I was a kid, I was such a TMNT mega fan that this game just straight up disgusted me and I refuse to play it! Years later I play it after enjoying Double Dragons & Battletoads. Yeah this game is really overrated. You can never come to good games too late, hell the 1st time I play Gargoyle's Quest on Gameboy was like last week & it was fun. Also I thought the Mega Drive version, was just some unofficial bootleg crap when I downloaded a romset of Mega Drive games. I never cared for this game & Rare always been a lil bit overrated to me.
Battletoads is awful, and the only reasons folks like it are for the infamous Turbo-Tunnel, and the music. From the horrendous collision detection to the stiff controls, Battletoads is a mess. I changed my mind about that new one. I am not getting it.
What a load of crap: how come that the only version without parallax scrolling is the Amiga one? I see here Jim Power, Lionheart, Agony, Turrican, Elfmania, some team17's etc. all showing several layers of parallax scrolling. Usually Amiga crappy ports were due to UK developers that coded primarily the Atari ST version, resulting in lack of colours, choppy scrolling and animations, and not supporting simultaneously music and sound fx (see Tiertex and Domark, but also the more regarded Bitmap Brothers). That's because Atari ST didn't have blitter, copper and Denise chips. I am pretty sure this crap originates from Atari ST code.
What ever it originates from, it's crap. But the biggest kick in the balls is the CD32. It still can't do music and sound effects even though it has the ability to read CD audio. That is just ultra lazy don't give a crap porting. Play the sound effects just like the Amiga then add some simple code to read CD data tracks. It's not difficult at all.
I remember when the Amiga was a thing and all the kids that had them used to brag. Back then all I knew was the graphics on many of the games looked nice but there are so few Amina games that play well it just amazes me. I’d take a C64 any day over the Amiga. At least the Commodore games played well. Yuck!!!
heh a friend used to compare my sega master system to his neighbors amiga ..... and he thought the amigia was soo cool i wonder if he still feels the same now .....
This game has never appealed to me, I think I may have tried it once in the past.. RARE games are normally interesting but this ain't. I find that Americans like it a lot.
Ninja Gaiden on the NES: I'm the gold standard for frustrating difficulty.
Battletoads: *laughs in jet bike*
Conversely, Ninja Gaiden Arcade was the first game I could beat on a single quarter
Yeah, Battletoads on gameboy is not a port of the NES version. However, the NES version was actually ported to the gameboy, but it was renamed Battletoads in ragnarok's world.
Yup, and the Master System version is a variation of the SNes/SFamicom version, not for arcade
Not to mention, the difficulty was lowered considerably from the original NES version, since it was based on the Japanese version of the original game
GG port is also missing three levels
Different game
Yeah, I got confused. I wasn't aware of two different game boy games.
@@WeskerSega I know nothing about this game.
I never questioned why random space invaders came outta nowhere and stole my life when I was a kid. When I see that part now I think it's hilarious in a trolly kinda way.
What I find fascinating of the SEGA ports is that the developers is Arc System Works!
I know. A very odd choice.
Contract development like ports is a common starting point for many studios

Lol😄😄I usually see Nintendon't at the end of these comments
Yeah Megadrive was better for games.
Also, quick tip: You can dash in this game by double tapping left or right. Doing this can also make you use different attacks while dashing. This can be useful for crowd control in the beat em up segments.
Yep, I know but I found it fiddle to bother with. Kind of like TMNT in Time. In that game I map dash to a button press.
Just ask the AVGN. lolz
3:44 Same with this section. Brutal in two-player mode.
Battletoads & Double Dragon is really good. I'd recommend that to anyone.
I don't know if the arcade port is based upon the console releases, but it would have been really cool to add it to the battle of the ports.
It's a completely different game.

Wheres the Gameboy and SMS version??
The Master System version is a port of Battletoads in Battlemaniacs for the SNES. So it's a different game, despite the fact that it takes on several similar levels, as it's a sort of sequel-remake plot-wise I agree it shouldn't be included. The Game Boy version, that is, the one titled Battletoads in Ragnarok's World, should have been included though. But I suppose he got confused with the other Battletoads game which was marketed with the same title and cover as the NES one but was actually a different game.
Your lack of the kettle bell move on the rappelling stage saddens me. Hold against the wall for a second. The stage is much more fun
To be fair though, he usually doesn't have enough time to get used to all the things in a game because he makes videos playing tons and tons of ports of a specific game every time within a week (and STILL needs enough time to make other videos). It's quite impressive how he's still making constant episodes actually.
@@solarflare9078 so i cant simply share knowledge of how to like the game more? It's not just for Mark, it's for everyone watching.
I really like when you provide commentary. Battletoads is good on all the systems honestly. No, they are not easy games by any means. However, i still fully enjoy playing them. I wish you had played these when released. I think you would get that nostalgic feel and how you say "get stuck in".
Maybe. I guess I came to this game too late.
Hey what about the SNES and Arcade versions? You also didn't show the Game Boy version.
It's a different game.
Read the video discription.
Oops sorry. My bad...I would still like to see them and would like to know your opinion of those specifically as I have no life.
I think the Arcade game is more of a supped up. Computer game than arcade game. I'm not surprised it didn't do well.
I did play the game quite a bit, but it was the gameplay variety -- some styles I just couldn't stand -- and the crazy difficulty in spots that made me decide one day to just say never again.
great video! really appreciate that you're doing console ports too.
It just wouldn't be acceptable.
That's a shame.
Indeed. It almost looks unplayable too

UPDATE: It has gotten a lot better according to the reveal trailer. Unfortunately, I'm still not keen on the art style of the game. Rash looks fine, Pimple is... okay, and Zitz looks pretty bad, but Dark Queen looks absolutely terrible.
Overall, it's a definite improvement, but I'm not sure if I would play it...
Nice video as always but I never understood why at Amiga you have to choose between music or sound effects..
I had an Amiga back then but I have no fondness for it unlike my consoles.
why no gameboy port?
Interesting that you say NES version is ugly, I heard it's considered one of the best looking games on the system.
I know but there are way more better looking and playing games on the system.
Generally.
That's because most of the ports were handled by UK developers on Atari ST.

Well the fact that you dislike many Amiga games is by now well known.

I'd have to agree because to me it's nothing of interest coming to it for the first time in 2020.

What a stupid statement. Of course it feels like a step backwards, these are very different and more powerful machines.
I wasn't aware of there being two Battletoad games on the GameBoy. Oh well.
This is why Microsoft was better without rare. And rare was better without Microsoft

Avgn played it
Ok I know this is more of based off playing Battlemanics but Jesus this series is just awful to play, I mean I don’t like how it starts out like your standard beatem up,
then the 2nd stage is well alright that’s a interesting change of pace (don’t like the Battlemanics take on it) and then the 3rd stage with the fucking hell spawn that is the Turbo bikes.
which btw this is the only thing people even remember about the series is the damn turbo bikes and ngl it’s pretty tiring to hear that.
I'm glad someone else agrees that this game is crap.
Ha! I have the same feeling towards Double Dragon. Never understood the hype even back in the days.
100% agree on Double Dragon
Double Dragon was great for its time but going back is tough, especially compared to Final Fight. I think its because the beat em up was still not a defined genre so Double Dragon has those annoying platform spots. And slowdown.
That said I still enjoy it because of the music, variety of moves, and nostalgia.
I never liked the Ninja Turtles, maybe that's why I never thought of Battletoads as a rip-off. But I definitely love the game, one of my all-time favorites. I finished the game legit with no warp zones. It's hard, very hard, but doable.
great video mate ,,,plz continue ,,,but where is the snes version of battletood
Battletoads in Battlemaniacs was a snes sequel, not a port
Different game. It's a pseudo-sequel-remake which rearranges some levels of the original Battletoads game but it's still not that game, but another one. What should have been included though is Battletoads in Ragnarok's World for the Game Boy, as that's the same game bar some levels which were stripped.
I tried that but the first stage was completely different so I guessed it was a different game.
Yes, someone who agrees with me.
this is one game that never appealed to me for some reason ......
*Get equipped with wrong opinion*
Amiga fanboys can’t blame the ‘lazy ST port’ for jerky scrolling and dodgy framerate this time.
Yeah, never was a fan of the game(even if i live in Mexico, where this game was very popular). For me, it was nothing more than a overrated NES game.
I agree but then again I am new to the game.
love the video
You've missed the snes version
Different game
Different game
Different game
I remember when the Amiga was a thing and all the kids that had them used to brag. Back then all I knew was the graphics on many of the games looked nice but there are so few Amina games that play well it just amazes me. I’d take a C64 any day over the Amiga. At least the Commodore games played well. Yuck!!!
heh a friend used to compare my sega master system to his neighbors amiga ..... and he thought the amigia was soo cool i wonder if he still feels the same now .....
MrNightshade2010 - hahahaha!!
This game has never appealed to me, I think I may have tried it once in the past.. RARE games are normally interesting but this ain't. I find that Americans like it a lot.
Yeah, this was a big seller in the states.
Not this American, lol. I never got into this and find it to be highly overrated.
Yeah me too. I wanted to like it but found it too frustrating and not very fun to play.
Nice to see I'm not the only one.
Me too. Maybe is because I'm a gen z kid, but still enjoyed games that aged poorly more than this one, never find it's attractive.
The sound on the genesis makes me want to go back to the nes version.
I like the Genesis ost alot
