I was twenty-four when Peter Gabriel released this in 1977 so I'm no spring chicken but Toni is top of the heap with this lesson. I've seen a dozen or so lessons on Solsbury Hill and Toni's is the best, her fingerpicking is superb and she's a good teacher as well now all I've gotta do is learn how to play it. It won't be easy as I've been playing electric for decades and we know what that means don't we? A new Hummingbird with 012s will test my strength.
No selfish bones here... Great teachers love their craft and really great teachers want to share. Toni is both. For those of us who don't play instruments but love music none the less, learning from these types of lessons, really helps the enjoyment. Thanks...
Don't know if you will see this but here goes. I had forgotten this song. I LOVE this song! I was in the Air Force in England in the mid 70s and was stationed near a small town named Greenham Common and, as there was nothing to do way out in the country, we just drove around getting high and seeing what we could find. We found this knoll {hill}, at least 80-90 feet high. {I've forgotten the name of it} So we climbed and sat at the top overlooking the surrounding countryside. Horse farm and greenery everywhere. After coming down to leave I looked back up and it reminded me of this song. Ahh, the memories. Now I have to find those photos and reminisce. Thanks, Toni, for the memories.
Hey all! Hope this play-through helps anyone trying to get down this tricky tune in 7/4. It was brought to my attention that at 1:23 I explain assigning your thumb and fingers to specific strings, but a better way to describe the technique would be that you assign your thumb to the alternating bass line and the remaining fingers to the strings above that. The ring finger's only ever used to pluck the 4-note chords in the B-section. Also, as you’ll notice, some of the voicings are a little strange to hear at first without a bass or the rest of the band in there (e.g. the rootless F#m in the A section and Bm chords in the B section) but this is transcribed as accurately to match the guitar part as I could pick out from the original recording Peter Gabriel released in 1977. You should be able to play along with that by following this tab, which is linked to in the description!
I hope one day you’ll do a “Justin Guitar” type of thing to teach complete beginners guitar. This tutorial is for advanced players not complete beginners like me.
I've tried to learn this song for many years; think this time will do, with the help of one of the greatest musicians of these times. Thanks Toni Lindgren. Greetings from south of the border. 🍀👍
I am so glad i found you. Watching you play is pretty much a tutorial on how to go from good to flawless. It's very generous of you to share this talent. Btw you're great with the doublebass too.
Just take it one phrase a day/two days and give your brain time to process it and build the neural connections. I like to spend about 30 minutes to 1 hour of practice before sleep, then 10 minutes when I wake up to refresh it. The brain does its magic while I'm asleep.
@@MrNgobody Back when I studied Psychology, this was called latent learning. Although I've always liked to practice guitar before bed as a decompression/ relaxation routine, I never thought of it as an especial learning technique. Could it be?
I might add for Charles: Do you have 10 fingers? If so, you have a real shot at doing this. I could easily play this, but of course I 've been playing for some time. One of the worst mistakes you can make is to under estimate what you are capable of.
@@guitarista666 It seems to work for me because when I wake up and play in the morning, I notice that I am improved. But yeah, playing before bed is also a great way to decompress!
This is a superb breakdown. I never thought I could get this song down but your lesson has shown me that it is possible and worth persisting. Thank you.
Excellent lesson ! Thank you !!!! What I appreciate the most is she talking the necessary (meaning going straight to the point = not too much blah blahblah), and that the tabs are included in the video. Also the clear presentation of the structure of the spong. This guitarist is a serious professional !
Steve Hunter might be the most under-rated guitarist EVER! This finger picking part in Solsbury Hill... Most of the guitar solos on Aerosmith's Train Kept A' Rollin... And the STUNNING 'Intro' on Lou Reed's live album 'Rock 'N Roll Animal'... It's a CRIME that more people don't know who Steve Hunter is or how much EXCELLENCE he contributed to the lexicon of rock guitar.
Hunter is a beast. I first heard him on Lou Reed's "R&R Animal" as you mentioned. The first time I heard "Train Kept A Rollin'" I didn't know at first who'd handled the solos because the phrasing was way too smooth & polished to be Joe Perry or Brad Whitford. Later I learned it was Steve Hunter and that made sense. A total pro....
Ah so many songs, so little time. And I’m retired. Nice lesson. Beautiful D-28. I have a custom dreadnaught with addi top and tiger wood back and sides. I’m not worthy but it sounds amazing. Gonna get after Solsbury Hill. Peter Gabriel was a genius. I still cry every time I hear Paula Cole singing Don’t Give Up.
I am a finger style guitarist and have been around some of the best guitarists out there, but I just wanted to mention that you have great technique and control. I used to follow you and Reina quite a bit, but I don't much anymore, for personal reasons.......BUT ......I always love to hear you and you are very good at instruction, though it's definitely for intermediate and higher, with a good knowledge of fingerstyle playing. Good job.
Wow, that makes a ton of sense. I love the no-nonsense method where you lay out the map, play the parts, show them slowly, and bam! Thanks, Toni. New subscriber here.
I also find the funny thing about Travis picking is that it goes, "I can't do it... I can't do it... Woah, I just did it." It's the most 'like riding a bike' technique. You keep at it and suddenly the fingers do their thing.
@@charlie-obrien As a beginner, a few years ago now, it never occurred to me that the thumb would do so much, and would be so busy. I assumed it was such a fat and clumsy digit that at best it might pluck the occasional bass note. But then I saw a RUclipsr - possibly Marco Cirillo - explaining all about the thumb and showing how fast and nimbly you could make it move, and how to pick with the edge of it... that was a revelation.
Toni, Thank you so much for taking your valuable time to teach these guitar lessons, which I have benefited from immensely. Please continue to offer these lessons when you have time!
Toni, you are truly an amazingly versatile musician and person (playing, teaching, performing, and clearly a good friend to those who are lucky to know you in person). Thank you for taking the trouble to post this. I took up guitar a long time ago to accompany myself on the songs I was writing and for many years I remained a chord person also with reasonable finger-picking. I decided to up my game a few years back and have been learning classical guitar. However, I've decided also to go back to songs and learn a new one each week. This one's really good and your instruction clear and helpful especially with the printable chart. All the very best from London.
Toni, Thank You very much. This is one of the most difficult songs I have ever tried to get under my fingers. I have watched all the lessons other good people have uploaded to youtube and I have to say your lesson is the best!
Thanks for the lesson. One of my favorite songs ever and you explained and demonstrated it so well that any one past beginner should be able to conquer the song, as long as the right amount of practice and dedication are applied.
Wow! Thanks,Toni. I don't play guitar anymore. I broke my left hand in 2009 and haven't picked up any of my guitars since. But I still love watching your lessons. Maybe I'm playing guitar vicariously through you. No pressure, though :) Love ya.
I've been following and admiring yours and Reina's music for a while and never knew you had these instruction videos! Following now. I really appreciate you for making this.
I don't think I've ever seen a cover tune lesson that was better arranged or more concise than THIS one. ... (and I've been KILLING MYSELF B Minoring this song in Standard without a capo ... dum dum!). ... thank you kindly and keep 'em comin'! .... SUBSCRIBED!
Thanks Toni! I've heard this song a million times, but never realized how nice that F sharp major sounds in that spot. This is just the motivation I needed to pick up my guitar. I found you from your cover of Queen Bee. It's my favorite song to play but your version has a very subtle pause between two notes that I've now tried to emulate when I play it.
