- Hello everyone, and welcome to Episode 5 of Tales From The Press Box, from Covering Liverpool. I know it's been a while since the last episode, so forgive me. Those pesky Reds playing so many games, eh?!
Anyway, in this episode, I speak with Neil Atkinson, co-founder and CEO of The Anfield Wrap, one of the largest fan-led media channels in the world of football.
You'll all be familiar with Neil's work as host, contributor and writer with TAW, I'm sure, but here he tells us his story, and that of The Anfield Wrap. How did it come to be created? Who were the driving forces behind it? And just how has it managed to grow into the empire it has become?
Neil also talks about his history with the Spirit of Shankly, his study years and his days working a number of other jobs, outside of football. He explains how important those days were, and discusses his hopes and ambitions for football media, both fan and mainstream, going forward.
It's a fascinating listen, and as Neil said afterwards, we probably could have done another couple of hours too. Maybe we will in the future, who knows?

Like all reds, I've been feeling down this weekend after Friday's news about Klopp, but this has given me a boost of positivity before we leave for the Norwich game. I always love listening to Neil, John and the team on the Anfield Wrap reflecting on the game and discussing upcoming fixtures. I stood on the Kop with my Dad from 1981 till we lost him just before the end of the 2014 season and whilst I'm so lucky to now be able to go with my husband and create new memories, I really miss chatting about the games with him and your podcasts remind me of those times. Never really listened to or watched a great deal of TAW content but Neil comes across really well and this was a brilliant insight into the background/startings of TAW.

Love the pod Neil and Neil (are there loads of Neil’s in Liverpool because of Phil Neal? Haha!) has so many layers to him so it’s great to hear his back story. As a massive fan of the Wrap it’s nice to see Neil open up about himself a bit more.
Quick question Neil, how come these aren’t on Spotify anymore? I saw you put a few up in November but I can’t find this one on there.
Would be great to see Gareth Roberts or Rob Gutman on here- like Neil I would like to hear their back-stories.

Loved learning more about my favourite person from TAW! Had the opportunity to thank him for such in person at a live event in Toronto. The entire group and the work they/contributors do delivering the Liverpool experience to us in and outside of the city has hardwired that connection for me over the last 10 years. I am up and down to the city from Perth a lot as my son studies in Liverpool. I love the city, the culture, the people, and of course the club.
As a 52yo fanboy I have made it my business to meet and speak to the contributors at various pubs. They have been lovely and welcoming.
They know that us listeners, feel like they are pals, mates who share a passion for everything they are talking about, and I am no different.
Neil is amazing, a passionate individual, with the drive required.

Inly ine complaint that it wasnt long enough. Neil is brilliant and big mainstream media outlets know this. If there is a reason they wont have him on anymore than what they do is brilliant. Brilliant for the WRAP and brilliant for real journalism. Loved watching him for the first time embarrassing Neville with facts, opinion and reality.

43:47 i would have liked to have seen our other strikers involved but i don’t think you can say he got the lineup wrong in ‘07. I felt we were the better side that night.

Neil's a rare wealth-generator, a Tony Wilson type visionary the city's always needed more of. I remember feeling quite jealous of Manchester's ability to produce these great, home-grown characters who could transform not just their own careers but the wider city with their singular talent, energy, drive and intelligence.

1:18:01 Neil's heads gone
Neil is Brilliant. He needed to give Gareth Roberts more credit though. Heaton and Robbo totally started it. I swerved it after they put the subscription up 100% from £5 to £10. Struggled to pay it after they pointed fingers at the club over ticket prices and people making money off the brand. And then they sold a podcast to the people that cost more than Netflix.
THE LATE CHALLENGE pod is so much better. Just sayin.
The Anfield Wrap has lost its way as a local pod. It’s aimed at the international audience. Good luck with that. But it’s hypercritical to be chattin socialism and then charging a £10.
Can’t disagree more. 10/month will get you all the audio and video for that price. That’s something like 35-40 podcast and 20 video segments a month. You’re in the .20p per show range. At a certain point a number of these people (Neil, Heaton, Gibbo, etc) all decided that this was their job and as such, how they were making a living. It costs money for rent, equipment, bandwidth, editing and payroll (they have a number of full time employees and I’m sure they compensate guests for their time as well) and all of the other costs it takes to make a productive media company. As for TLC, it’s wonderful and sure, they give out a few shows a week for free but so does the TAW. TAW also really limits the commercials/sponsors that they mention which is a large revenue stream for most production companies. You can also pay Robbo and Cope through Patreon to receive more of their content. It’s sort of the same thing…….at it roots.
