WOOO today's video is one that is extremely self indulgent ... so thank you for allowing me ... LOL
This is the Super Switch Tester that I bought specifically for ASMR, and then actually found that it came in handy and now I want like 10 more keyboards oh NOOOO
Also as stated in the video, I am NOTTTTTT a mechanical keyboard expert AT ALL, so if you ARE; my lack of knowledge will probably be quite cringy... I'm doing this for the ASMR!! I claim no knowledge! LOL
Sleep well to the click click clicks :)

If a switch has "milky housing", it means that the top of the switch is made from a different kind of plastic. This effects the rgb shinethrough (more even bot not as intense), and gives the switch a more deeper and fuller sound.

Btw, if you have some switches with spring ping or leaf ping, you can lube these with appropriate lube (e.g. krytox 205g0 for linears and tribosys 3204 for tactiles) and the sounds will be gone. So that's how you can eliminate spring ping in cherry switches if you really enjoy using them...
(And if you lube a switch, it will make it much smoother compared to the stock experience.)

The different weights are just the actuation force required to activate the switch. The browns you like so much have an actuation force of 45 grams with a peak force of 55 grams which is just referring to when you hit the tactile “bump” of the switch.

18:31 Milky housings of a switch means the top housing of a switch is made from a different blend of plastic. Rather than the polycarbonate/nylon blend you would get in an original housing, you get POM introduced in the mix, which softens the plastic and makes the housing translucent.

Just finished up my first plateless build recently, and I'm in love with it. It's incredibly bouncy and fun to type on.
Some of my favorite linear switches are Tecsee Diamonds/Jadeites. They're incredibly smooth because of the UHMWPE Stem and Top Housing, but also deep sounding because of the PC Bottom Housing. An alternate to them would be Giant V5s, but they're more clacky sounding because of the Nylon Bottom Housing. They're both highly underrated switches imo, and if recommend anybody in the hobby to try them out.
If you want some good tactiles, Mint Chocolate Chip POMs are a very poppy sounding tactile with a similar D shaped bump as BobaU4Ts. I recommend a top mount with a stiffer plate like brass if you use tactiles.

Like you, I particularly enjoyed the sound of the Cherry milk key, so I looked into it. Apparently, they're only called 'milk' in Asia - 'white' in the west. They seem to be notorious for consistency problems, i.e. one of the white keys might sound and feel great but another could feel bad. There's a Reddit thread on it if you're interested. It's a shame because I really liked that one. But I'm very interested in the Gateron silent keys though. Need to look into them. Thank you for showcasing this! This is something I've never explored before and I think it's fascinating.
Also, 'cN' is centinewtons (100 centinewtons = 1 Newton). The Newton is a standard measure of force, so this refers to how hard you have to press the key. As an example, the Cherry MX blacks are rated at 60cN, which is 0.6N.
Hope the Jan/Feb schedule is working well for you!!

However I'd like to start a channel covering custom as well as pre-build keyboards on the Chinese market (e.g. Aliexpress) because there are some decent options which are insanely good in terms of quality for it's price.

    • @laxxie8234
      @laxxie8234 2 года назад +2

@@kam8556 if you're gonna build a custom keyboard, there are a ton of different options. I would suggest you to pick a sound profile you personally like (e.g. low-pitched or thock (that's how it's called in the community), high-pitched (or clacky), poppy, muted, etc.) and the type of the switch (linear, tactile or clicky). Then there are different materials for plates (like fr4, polycarbonate, aluminum, brass, etc.) and cases (plastic, aluminum, etc.) which can also affect the sound pretty heavily.
And there are even lots of mods with which you can upgrade your keyboard (like tape-mod where you basically put tape under your PCB to improve the sound, pe-foam which gives a poppy sound signature and so on).

Seeing as a lot of other people have answered the other questions Gibi had like spring ping and milky housing so I'll answered the so far unaswered question of the BOX switches. It just means the way the stem is shaped. Many of the stems have a litte cross on the top that goes into the keycaps. BOX switches have that same cross but they also have a little "box" around them that helps them stay a lot more stable and not wiggle around as much. It shouldn't effect the sound at all just stability.
Also... we all have that "breaking up with cherry" moment, trust me.

The only downside of these types of try it yourself keyboard things, is it doesnt take into account the backplate of the keys on the actual keyboard. Like you could have a "silent" key on a backplate that makes it sound not silent at all, and vice versa. Theyre great though for trying the actual feeling of the key. The weight refers to the amount of weight needed to trigger the key press on the computer. Great video GIBI!

It's nice to see a video involving mechanical keyboard details by someone who's a little more my speed about it lmao. Sometimes it's hard to tell the differences, but having the switches right there next to each other for fast comparison is awesome and makes it much easier. Some of these, I'd never even heard of until now! It might be interesting to do a video with a keyboard that has different kinds of switches in certain keys, or maybe certain rows, something like that, and then you type normally on it. Might be fun to try and guess which switches are in it, too.

SMD vs. Regular. SMD means the switch is soldered to the SURFACE of the circuit board. Regular switches are THROUGH HOLE meaning they have pins that go THROUGH the circuit board and are soldered to the back. It shouldn't make THAT much of a difference to the sound as the mechanism of the switch is the same. Through hole switches would be more secure IMO.
