    To this day no guitar player can match Mike Bloomfield when it comes to playing slow blues. The solo in the middle of this song is a masterpiece that no one has been able to touch. Not Clapton, the Kings, white , black or in between, The feeling, the phrasing was truely a gift from God.

    he WAS the greatest. Also was nice cat. I was 14 years old hangin' around Club 47 one of the weeks Butterfield was in town at (Cambridge MASS) - had a broken leg, fell off my bike, and he took his time and insisted on helping me get up the stairs after the show. And so he also took his time when he played. He could REALLY pour the heat on like nobody else ever. Miles Davis said he was one of the greats. Play on brother.

    Perfect example of what most players today are missing....taking their time. I call it "breathing". I guess it's probably just plain "Soul". You either get it or not. Mike had it all. Phrasing, style, intensity when called for and sexy smoothness as required. Listen to the whole band. Its stone blues man and it makes you feel that way.
    Sadly the only time I saw him live in a very small club here in Montreal he was so high he played terrible. I felt betrayed. Stupid me.

    I am blown away! Incredible understanding of songwriting, guitar phrasing, vibrato, knowing when to be quiet and when to explode. Michael Bloomfield is the greatest blues guitarist I have ever heard -- part Freddie King, BB King, Albert King, Otis Rush -- He can take 3 notes and runs so many variations around them.... what a tragedy he left us so early. He was a great musicologist, producer and arranger - Bob Dylan, Al Kooper, Janis Joplin Kozmic Blues Band, Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Electric Flag and on and on. But he just wanted to be a bluesman. What a loss but we have the music.....this track is amazing. I could listen to this for hours!

      A moving tribute, my man, and a pleasure to read (while Michael rips away). A densely packed, well-crafted paragraph capturing much of what could be said. I’ve just been listening to Peter Green (w/Mayall, and Mac). I was thinking (feeling) that he may, in fact, be the best. Something especially glorious about the tone, phrasing, and structure of solo. And simple as a child - more like BB. I interspersed some early Eric to make sure, but decided on Peter anyway. Then I played ‘Alberts Shuffle’ off Super Session and said, “Wait a minute!”. I rushed to RUclips looking for some Michael off the Live Super Session (none to be found),
      and came across this. Holy shit!! Yes, he may be better than Peter because he simply can play more, his fingers are more adept, they fly faster, the passages are more complex - factor in the musicality.
      Peter sings better. And perhaps achieved a fatter, richer, tone ('If You Be My Baby' off Shrine, and 'Coming Your Way').
      Why the fuck must I always compare? ;-)

      Tor Strasburg : With affection, allow me to suggest that your last question - "Why must I always compare?" is the most enlightened of other intelligent and tasteful observations you make. A natural impulse perhaps but still one which much be resisted in order that we might listen without prejudging performances. In my opinion.

    Pure genius. What he could do with a handful of notes always blows my mind. His Stop from Super Session is legendary.
    Apart from his brilliant maj-minor phrasing I really dig his wide, slow vibrato and sort of detuned bending.
    One of the great guitarists who was “auteur,” meaning, you can recognize him just by hearing a lick. Just like the Al/BB/Fr. King, Jimi, Clapton, SRV, JL Hooker, Collins, Peter Green, Grant Green, Robben Ford, among others.

    Johnny Hiland is a monster guitar player. Maybe the best overall alive today. Most of his songs tho are centered around his playing and he just goes crazy - go Johnny go, Mike Bloomfield played softly in the background until it was his turn to take a ride and then he just brought the song home. His licks weren't overly fast but soulful and smooth as buddah.

    • @stevemendelson9882
      @stevemendelson9882 6 лет назад +1

      Otis Spann was a master of the blues piano. In some ways he was like Michael and BBKing -- not too many notes, the master of understated piano yet he moved the blues along for Muddy's band. Listen to Spannie, so subtle, have some old vinyl of his group as well as him playing with Muddy. Michael is my favorite guitar player -- I mean Jimi blew my mind in June of 1967, and BB played so well so long -- first heard him in 1972 with Terry Riley, BB, Ike and Tina Turner and the Rolling Stones in Oakland arena. BUT, i think Michael was the most tasteful and skilled player ever.

    Mike was just a really great bluesman. Too bad so many feel it necessary to add "white" to that. You know, it just doesn't matter what color someone is. A great "white " jazz musician? A great "black" classical violinist? When will that kind of stuff end and we just dig the groove that Mike, or anyone else lays down? I was around when Dylan grabbed him for Highway 61 Revisited. I dug his guitar work all the way down the road. I don't care what color he is. I'm glad his music lives on and so many people are discovering his soulful art. And, you know, it ain't a competition. Who's the best? A rather meaningless and distracting view. Just dig it if you dig it.

    growing up in the 60's, most guitarists learned 'blackbird' , CSN, and that shit. once i heard mike bloomfield and peter green i had little interest in that. there is a young player named sadie johnson. check out her acoustic killing floor/crossroads. it's as good as this-and she isn't loaded.
