Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Microsoft co-founder and co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation on June 16, 2023. In their conversation, Xi said Gates was the “first American friend” he met this year and expressed hopes for activities beneficial to both China and the US. Gates also announced the donation of US$50 million to a research fund for a joint disease and medicine research organisation with China.

I am just sad by the fact that Xi trashed the mighty Jack Ma, and now embracing white billionaires from the West. Don’t get me wrong-I live in the West, and appreciate Gates for their philanthropy. But I just don’t understand why Chinese leadership doesn’t embrace their own, and by doing so losing a huge leverage. It looks like the CCP still needs to smarten up, and embrace their own business titans instead of wooing “White Man’s Burden”.

It was a very bad decision to remove the Glass-Steagall Act in the late 1990s, which led to the spectacular failure of huge banks during the financial crisis of 2007-2008. To prevent another disaster, Dodd-Frank and this statute both need to be reestablished right away. What happened with SVB is only the beginning of what will happen if nothing is done to address the current situation.
The banks didn't fail because that act was removed, the banks failed because they were pushed by the government to lend to people that couldn't afford to buy the loans back...which is why the government owned 75% of those loans and had to bail itself out. Also, it was only a few banks that failed, the unlucky ones that were holding most of those bad loans.
