In October last year I did a 4000 km road trip in my 98 TT, with 320 000 km on board. No spare parts, no tools. Car did great, a better mileage then expected and would take it on another long journey without any worries. Just after the trip, went for the technical inspection and the plastic tube from oil stick became pieces, and now there are plastic bits in the oil pan. Should sort before comes out of hibernation. We own these cars for what they are and we should enjoy them with every chance we get.

Well said! Glad you are putting the car to good use, wow that is a lot of mileage. It is clocked up over the years. I would fully recommend taking the sump off and checking the oil pick up pipe as well as cleaning out before using it again last thing you want is low pressure.

My 2005 has the cup holder. I actually love it. It took a while to get used to it… but i have no trouble using it. I can’t complain about the shifter, because mine are paddles on the steering wheel- it’s the DSG- which shifts faster and better than any manual. I agree about the cluster and screen. I had mine replaced. I never noticed any issue with rain. As to reliability. My TT has been my daily driver since 2007. It has been the most reliable car I have ever owned with literally the lowest cost of ownership in terms of repairs. In 17 years of it, I’ve had a $45 brake light switch go bad. And just recently, had to replace the fuel pump. And I did replace the cluster because the center screen went wonky. That’s it for mechanical other than scheduled maintenance. I did have the head liner redone since it’s been parked in the sun ever since I bought it and had started to pull loose. Of course, aside from the woman who leased it for 2 years before I bought it with only 14K miles on it, i have been the only driver of this car, and I don’t mistreat it. The DSG won’t allow me to go over redline or lug the engine. And mine doesn’t have ‘launch control’ and is strictly OEM with the S-Line tuning. Whereas a lot of used TT’s out there likely have been ridden hard and often put away wet by the testosterone crowd.

    1. No cupholder unless you buy 1 or managed to get a car with 1
    2. Pixelated screen
    3. Working in the engine bay can be tight compared to the MK3 TT I own
    4. Same as you is the trust. There is a car show on and would have liked to have taken it but its going to be a 200 mile round trip and I don't fully trust it but only had it a few months and only done a 1000 miles in it.

@@TheParrottBros I agree. I have bought a couple things for the interior rather than some mechanical things but I was stripping the interior to get rid of a smell in it so it made sense to change the centre console at the time. It's all mainly mechanical or things which will fail MOT I have bought. The last thing I need to sort out that will fail MOT is the blow from the exhaust. I'm guessing it's the gasket between the turbo and exhaust.

I'll probably be doing the NC500 again in May (around 1500 miles for me) and I don't have any worries about that because I know the car can be recovered home if need be. I've had my 225 roadster for 17 years now and I've only been stranded twice, both because of a failing fuel pump. I'd like to take it to the Alps again (went in 2012) but would be concerned about getting it fixed or recovered if outside the UK.

    Great content.
I bought my most recent (2nd) TT 225 (180 000km, LHD, needing work, €3500), and drove it back home (Munich), and for the last 200km the gearstick bushings finally failed (they were clearly on the way out anyway) and my lowest gear was 3rd gear! I fixed the bushings and several other things (pick up, catch can, boost leaks, coolant temp sensor seal, ALL fluids and filters, etc) myself and drove the car around for a few thousand km.
I then checked my breakdown insurance validity 😂 and drove the car 2500km from Munich to North Yorkshire (round trip) to see family, get a new clutch fitted by Bryn, and pick up some baseball stitch seats etc that my brother had picked up for me.
The roadster never missed a beat, even though the weather was terrible, and as you mentioned I did get wet from the run off from the roof😂.
I love my TT (although I did have a pretty comprehensive toolkit and many zip ties/wire/tape in the boot).

Only after something serious happens it will throw a check engine light, and after that, the next level is it won't start, so you're probably good for Scotland mate :) North 500 will be very hard on the suspension including the anti-roll bars, because the interesting rural roads there are more pot holes than asphalt.

A few more for the list, from experience as a long time multiple Mk1 TT owner since 2004
    1. Headlight washer pumps - burning out! Then they leak and all the water drains out (no water then to wash your windscreen and dash warning light, plus an MOT failure). To fix it you have to take the wheel off, inner wheel arch liner off and pull the bottle. Why did Audi put the bottle in the wing?
    2. Headlight washer aliens failing - the bellows crack or burst and leak (due to lack of use). To fix you have to take the wheels off, liners off, bumper off, all the pipes off (at least in the UK now they are no longer an MOT failure!). Some nice and easy electric squirters would have been better :)
    3. Batteries that drain flat due to alarm - if you don't use the TT that often the battery drains out (the solution of course is to simulate an EV and plug yourself into the grid with a trickle charger). Would be good to have a switch to completely turn off the alarm.
    4. Engine bay - more space! It's so cramped in there!
As sports cars go, the Mk1 TT is still turning heads 25+ years on. Great cars, lots of smiles per mile despite all the gremlins that appear from time to time.

    1 missing 6th gear (my model 8n from 1999, later model's do have a 6th gear)
2 no cruise control (in later models it was an option)
3 and yes every TT 8n has the problem with the LCD pixel console / dashboard
Currently I have an issue with my fuel gauge reading being off. I don't know if that is a typical problem with the TT 8n.

      @TheParrottBros  2 месяца назад

Is yours a 180 model? As I thought all 225’s had a 6 speed box,
Cruise control can be retrofitted fairly simply,
My fuel gauge has a mind of its own, it could be something as simple as the sender or the clocks

    • @rudyn4865
      @rudyn4865 2 месяца назад

@@TheParrottBros Indeed, spot on. My model is the 8n 180 quattro without ESP and without spoiler. 6th gear and cruise control was missed in the past when I was traveling quite freqently in German on the autobahn.
I guess you are right about the fuel sensor. For next MOT (APK) I will ask my garage to check.
I'm now at 360.000 km / 224.000 miles, second owner of the car and already in my possession since 2004. Car never let me down other than the standard stuff like flat tire or empty fuel.
5th reason dislike. Initially only available in silver and black.
Keep up the good work, looking forward to your next video.

    My top 5 gripes
    1. Every mk1 alarm fails.
    2. The body panels will rust eventually and need replaced or fixed
    3. A sadist engineered the panel under the steering wheel above the pedals 😂, it takes 20+ attempts to fit it back on correctly.
    4. Aftermarket parts tend to be awful and only expensive oem/equivalent work (not strictly mk1 I know)
    5. Every job you undertake will guaranteed unearth at least 2 more jobs that need doing also 😂
