We’re already in a crisis with respect to Black health: Why DEI in medicine is absolutely necessary

- The point of DEI initiatives is to encourage representation and participation of people of different genders, races, ethnicities, religions, ages, sexual orientations, disabilities, and classes. However, some members of Congress beg to differ and are seeking to dismantle it. Dr. Ebony Hilton and Dr. Uché Blackstock spoke with Ali Velshi to unpack how DEI initiatives in medicine can improve health outcomes for patients. According to the Association of American Medical Colleges, increases in the representation of Black primary care doctors has been associated with 30.6 days of longer life expectancy among Black people.

If you're a woman and you have to go to the ER for any reason (especially shortness of breath and arm pain) and a doctor asks you if you're experiencing anxiety or feeling anxious, ALWAYS SAY NO. It's a question that's rarely posed to men, and it's a way for doctors to dismiss your symptoms.

Two days after I commented on this video, I was diagnosed with a heart condition and informed that I’m at high risk heart failure (if I’m not already in heart failure, they need to do some more test). I have had these symptoms for five years, and the signs indicating my heart condition were apparent on ECG and echocardiogram back then. But I was told it was anxiety!
I went to the emergency room had done showing I had an infection and hypersensitivity they still told me it was anxiety 8 years later I'm still suffering and have infections, abnormal labs all over no help
The problem is not looking at all Americans being human. This is the system of racism in America.

I am disabled Veteran and have been seeking treatment at the VA hospital for a month . I had to go to a civilian hospital to get a diagnosis of pneumonia. My mental health was questioned. My own nurse/case manger threatened to admit admit to the mental ward. My sanity was always questioned yet I sacrificed for this country that has never cared about us. 😢 STAY WOKE YALL

Fibroids can be common and treatable but a good attentive doctor is necessary. This makes my blood boil.Bravo DEI holism.
As a black woman with autoimmune diseases, it is very hard to get needed tests done. They just refuse to order tests that will help me even care for myself. i've been a nurse for over 4 decades, still I am treated like it it's all in my head. They focus only on what they want to focus on. Yes, I have seen some things in my 40+ years working as a nurse. The VA is the absolute worst.

My sister just passed away from an unknown cancer and she was just 33. We are so tried of getting miss treated. And someone should be handle accountable.

As a black professional we know that we have to be the best in the room because we are very aware that people conflate our presence with some lowering of standards. So, if you’re on a plane with a black pilot that is where you should feel the safest. No minority in high ranking positions got there by being inept. Trust me. We don’t get a free lunch.

@@roejogan7770 no, I am not paranoid. These are real conversations being had right now. People suggesting that they won’t feel safe with a doctor or pilot who is a minority. Like a company , an entire hiring committee of educated individuals, knowingly hired some unqualified minority person to work amongst them as a colleague to the detriment of their own company. I have been on many hiring committees. That doesn’t happen. Even the thought of it is ridiculous! But, some like Charlie Kirk suggest that is what DEI is doing.
This hits close to home for me as my wife visited doctors several times complaining of severe abdominal pain and unscheduled bleeding, they sent her home each time. Later she was found to be suffering from Ovarian Cancer. Which of course due too a late diagnosis she is still fighting it to this very day, my hope is that she out lives me because after forty five years I certainly do not want to live without her.
I hope your wife survives this and is blessed with health and healing. May you both continue to have many more happy years together.

In my experience, female surgeons, regardless of service tend to go slower and make sure before they cut anything. They are also more likely to ask for help. It can make surgical cases longer, but they are less likely to cut something vital and be more thorough.
Ive been a scrub twenty-two years now, traveled for sixteen of them and sadly only worked with a handful of surgeons who are black. 😢 Those numbers need to be higher.

The patients who see these two doctors have hit the jackpot! Dr. Hilton & Dr. Blackstock are examples of intelligent, knowledgeable, compassionate, and empathetic physicians at the top of their field. We should all be so lucky.
Unfortunately we (blacks) have to get several more degrees in any field of study then whites men & white women have to have to hold the very same position.. yet they are still calling us lazy & dumb.. today's congress shows just who's actually ignorant & hateful 💯😔 ..sad but true! ☝

We need to learn how to reeaech all medical procedures and medications. It's important to self care and use prevention early in life. These new doctors today very different and shows no compassion towards black Americans patients.

Just this year was the first time I ever had a doctor ask me what I wanted and not just telling me. It felt crazy to me to think that I had a chose in the matter.
I am in this very situation right now. It's like my docs don't hear anything I say. Makes me sad.
@kathyyoung-rj7tw Get a family member to advocate for you. One who is in the medical field. If you don't have one, have a friend or find an individual from church. Look into groups in your local area to get support.
I'm in the same boat, I recently changed my PCP to a black female physician and am waiting to be seen by her, hopefully she listens! I work in the medical field and they don't listen. Its everything else except what I'd like to talk about and I'm so tired of it!

It’s a huge issue if you are a young person with chronic illness, a woman, and dealing with PTSD. They hate emotional people like I couldn’t ever. It’s horrible. I can’t imagine what it’s like for black people if I have life long trauma. I hate that you go through that. ❤
Past 2 years i have began to lose the ability to ambulate. Constant appointments due to pain, unable to work because unable to balance when walking. My mental health was questioned, i was told that X-ray is showing nothing. Finally, after telling an Arabic speaking doctor that i feel discriminated against, he handled me differently. He ordered MRI, we have found that my spine has collapsed, there are bone cysts in both legs, meniscus torn in both legs, tear in my quad. I shouldn't be suffering this way. But i am, not because the medical care doesn't exist, but because i am Black in America
Fibroids are a serious issue. I had to undergo surgery in my case. White Doctors could not help me as they did not know what to do with me. It took a black Doctor to save my life. I was operated on by a black Doctor!

One of my college friends just had a major surgery removing fibroids! She showed me pictures of all of them, and I couldn't believe how big some of them were. She ended up having a full hysterectomy. She is also a beautiful black woman, and it makes me so sad that the woman you highlighted in your story passed away from the same thing. Thank you for talking about this. We need to do better.
Hmmm...DEI being linked to "unqualified" employees, sounds similar to the claim that was made when women entered the workforce and after affirmative action was passed.
Many medical schools have discovered that applicants who have more life experience and more varied skills are more successful in medical school than applicants who have the highest grades. So what some call “ lowering standards” not at all lowering standards it’s demanding a higher standard!
It’s become far more common for medical schools to set standard for academic grades and MCAT scores , which acts as a filter for applications. Any application that does not meet the minimum standard does not get assessed. The applications that do meet the minimum academic standard, go on to be assessed for other aspects, including life experience (volunteer work, publications, previous career, etc.). All rounded applicants make more successful medical students and better doctors!
I’m a labor and delivery nurse and my patients that spoke only Spanish would smile wide when I told them that I also spoke the language. Those patients usually insist on having a Spanish speaking nurse. They were more open to assisting in their care.
I am bilingual (English and French), although I work in French English is my first language.
When I was in the hospital recovering from major surgery, and I had a nurse, who only spoke French, I admit it was a little terrifying, because I was so groggy from the anaesthesia that I had trouble thinking, speaking in my language. The thought of giving birth without a nurse that speaks the same language as me is really terrifying.

We, as a community must stop worrying about reality shows and deviant music moguls. Pay attention to the people and laws which are more important to our overall lives.
I remember reading that skin color indicators for conditions, in doctor's learning materials/textbooks worked for white skin. As such, doctors were learning how to attend to white persons to the detriment of Black persons.

This is what my daughter is dealing with now! In our area Texas Oncology has the monopoly for cancer treatment and she is getting the run around from them. My daughter has been suffering for too long with the same issues as the women in the story! Even though she is being monitored by Texas Oncology because of her high risk, they are still not taking her condition seriously!

As a woman with a rarely diagnosed genetic disorder and multiple autoimmune conditions, that were only diagnosed once I was 40, it infuriates me when people argue that we need to be gender blind or colourblind when it comes to medicine.
As a woman, I am not a small male. Using diagnostic criteria based on research that was only done on men and has never been validated for women is why it took me years to get proper diagnosis. In the meantime, I was repeatedly told everything was “ all psychological”. Two months ago, I learned that I have heart damage. For the past six years, I have been told that my cardiac symptoms are “just anxiety” . When I was diagnosed with genetic disorder I learned that some of the comorbid conditions cause some symptoms, so when I reported worsening shortness of breath, heart palpitations, and chest pain, ALL OF IT WAS BRUSHED OFF. Turns out there is damage to my heart and might be in heart failure. I don’t know for sure because I’m still waiting to see the cardiologist.
I say all of this as a well educated, white woman (and retired military officer). I am incredibly privileged and that makes me so angry because if I am struggling like this… it is so much worse for women who aren’t white. 😢 This is WRONG and must change!
Hey my daughter has been having chest pains for a month now and they tell her it's panic attacks. Do you recall what test they did on you to discover it was your heart?
@@branevans3705 ultimately it was an echocardiogram. My new family doctor ordered one after I had an ECG during an ER visit (for something completely unrelated) that indicated a potential abnormality. The ER doctor never said anything to me, so I was super surprised when my GP wanted me to go for an echocardiogram.
@@branevans3705 if she’s having chest pains, they should be doing a ECG when she’s having the chest pains. Unfortunately, ECGs aren’t going to necessarily pick up on everything at least that’s what I’m starting to learn about women’s hearts.

Your story is so much like mine. I hate to be a conspiracy theorist but it seems like they won't order important tests because if tests find anything, they will have to address the findings. Seems like they would prefer giving you BP and cholesterol meds and send you on your way no matter what your problem is. It's ridiculous.

I had two doctors of colour and in my honest opinion, they treated me so much better than some doctors that I saw regarding my health issues. And as an aside, male doctors do treat women so much differently because they do NOT feel what we feel!!!
Yes,that is so true! After having my last child at 38,I mentioned I was bleeding heavier than in the past. He blamed it on the "pill" that I no longer took. I'd had tubes tied after the birth. Thing is,I'd never been on the pill my entire life! I was entering into pre menopause!

Actually, as I've also experienced, some medical professionals are dismissive when one expresses their concerns. They don't listen and/or do not wish to hear what's being said.
But yearly Pap smears are completed at annual gynecological visits! It sounds like she was did not have regular exams. Cervical cancer is a slow growing cancer for the most part! It takes a while before it actually moves into the cancer phases.
Well she mentioned she had a gynecologist. Few would say "my gynecologist" without actually having one they see regularly.

Mlk's quote in the I Have a Dream speech said, "I have a dream that one day my 4 little children WILL ONE DAY LIVE IN A NATION where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I grew up never meeting a black person in the Midwest and saw racism every day. In the military, I met and married a black girl and that's when I saw true racism! No it's not gone yet but I have hope for the future! 🇺🇲

I had a fibroid in my 20s - it grew to the size of a grapefruit before it was "found" despite a year of being doubled over in pain every month from ovulation to menstruation.

Yes we are. I had a severe 2,5 week period suddenly and I am 76yrs old! They dismissed it...took several days to get appt. Wants me to have ultrasound because I also told them that I have fibroids. The whole thing started almost 4 weeks ago. They never sent the referral so I called the hospital to make the appt. I'm scheduled on July 12th for the ultrasound. Good thing I'm a praying woman.
Same here! Went in after a week delivering my baby with a high blood pressure. They gave me pain meds for 10 hours and I was in post preeclampsia. Eventually my blood stopped clotting and I was in DIC which not many people survive. I made it only because of prayer and Gods grace. I’ll never forget the white doctor that kept saying oh that bp is not so high. My normal blood pressure is 90/60 😳 recently I went in for a minor surgery and the nurse asked me what do I take. When I said nothing she said no blood pressures, nothing 😮 wow, just wow! My health is textbook today only because I medicate myself with Chinese medicines.crazy thing is, I’m a respiratory therapist and my husband is a nurse 😢

The way doctors treat women has been the bane of my health care for many years. I have crohn's disease. When I first exhibited symptoms, I was told it's just "Pelvic Inflammatory Disease." Code name for "Something is inflamed & we don't know what it is." After several months of being treated for the inflammation, I mentioned that I has gotten divorced the previous year. Well of course, that's the problem. I'm mentally making myself ill because I haven't gotten over the divorce. Time to find a new doctor. A woman, who finally listened to me, ran the appropriate tests and identified the problem.
Yup! My experience is similar. It took me eight years to get diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. When I first reported bleeding, they did a couple of tests that came back ok and then told me since it wasn’t bleeding anymore it’s just IBS. Every time I reported bleeding it was dismissed because it wasn’t a large amount. Finally when it was a larger amount they did more tests and found polyps. So they didn’t look beyond that. I then developed PTSD from my military service, and from then on any symptoms were IBS, without exception. It wasn’t until after I changed doctors, and casually mentioned offhand at an appointment that I’d had some bleeding that somebody took me seriously! It’s worth noting that my family doctor is not white, but is Asian.
Sorry to bust your "women are perpetual victims" narrative, but, men get misdiagnosed and have to wait long times for treatment, too. Here's a shocker: You're not special.
I wasn’t diagnosed until my late 30’s with Fibroids which turned out to be something else that was surgically removed. I was lucky it was benign. And it only was discovered because my hematologist wrote a scathing letter to my Gynecologist to explore my problems because my blood levels were so low. The healthcare system failed me. I complained since I was a teen and having now part of my uterus removed I cannot have children. It’s something I have a hard time getting over.
I've had a similar experience seeking medical assistance. After reporting intense pain in my legs, my blood was taken and I was asked to return later for the results. After returning and complaining about the pain again I received no answer about what could be the problem. I was simply advised to take an aspirin. Then got dismissed. We can't force these people to care about us. This just sucks.
Velshi, thanks. These women give us real hope Elon Musk could be really helpful by focusing on engineering and not interfering in diversity debate. Please Elon leave this alone, make your contribution where it is beneficial.

I suffer for years having a fibroid the size of a cantaloupe. Everytime I was rushed to the hospital and asked if I was pregnant.. now my cantaloupe is the size of an orange 60 years later . Horrible
I have received excellent care from my Black female doctors. I had fibroids had to have surgery and she took excellent care of me. I felt safe.

Thanks for bringing more attention to this important topic! It's 2024 and that these preventable deaths of people of color are still happening in America is very disheartening. My dad also passed away too soon, because of a misdiagnosis.
All of this is so scary to me because my daughter is suffering with epilepsy and after the first year of dealing with the local specialist and not getting anywhere we ended up going to John Hopkins 4 hours away to a new specialist and things are looking up. Her new neurologist is Indian and we have a better connection with him. My daughter’s seizures are being controlled much better.

That is a painful, but necessary read.
My experience suggests "Do No Harm" is just a slogan for some doctors. But just like there are bad cops, there are bad people in the medical profession. With one political candidate inciting people to violence, a minority should pray they do not get one of these people as their doctor (the voice of experience).

I had major surgery last Aug and although my surgeon was a white guy and he was lovely, but I had a great number of nurses that came from Africa…. Their care was 1000% and so funny that I’m sure aided in m recovery! They were so professional too…….. please stop judging people by the colour of their skin……. 😔😔😔
You really should have made sure your surgeon was black.....

My boss (a great strong white woman) started feeling bad. She thought she had the flu, but never like this.
She went to the hospital and had some tests done (X-rays) and they agreed she was just sick, go home and rest.
The next shift doctor saw the X-rays and recognized my boss had a heart attack! They called her back into the hospital…she died a week later. So…was she treated wrong because of her race?

This is very sad. Why didn’t they send her tumors to pathology? It should have been very easy to diagnose early…since she was asking for help. I hope the family will sue. I know it’s very hard with the pain from their loss but will go far in making doctors treat every patient the same. I have had close relationships with families in same position that did not sue…it’s not about the money as much as the necessity to get their stories out there! And, make someone pay for their lack of ability to do their jobs!!

as she wrote, the continued to dismiss it as 'nothing' and probably never did any testing. if they did, they would have found what was there. as she wrote, they repeatedly dismissed it as nothing. this is unbelievably common.
@@possumofantikka8160Women should regularly get pap smears every year. It's up to the woman to go annually. Paps are cancer screening especially for cervical cancer and I can't help to think it would've been caught earlier had she had regular paps.
Yall trying extremely hard to ignore that she was getting regular care, the providers who should have been running tests and DOING THEIR JOB past shrugging at an abnormal result did not do their jobs.
There is a nationwide pattern of them not doing their entire jobs correctly or even in the realm of adequately, and the result is a higher mortality rate for black women and other minorities that get blamed for the MYRIAD of ways the system can fail you. Blaming a patient for their death when you weren't there, contradicting what they and their loved ones posted before and after they died, isn't playing devil's advocate or 'just asking questions.' It's nitpicking and downplaying the severity of medical neglect that costs lives.

It took 15 years for me to be diagnosed with endometriosis. I would beg and plead to be heard. I would constantly complaints about excruciating pain only to be treated as if every woman goes through this and I'm just "complaining"
My (black) mother died under the exact same circumstances.
Theres no justification for the way women of ANY ethnicity
or skin color are bein treated or rather MIStreated by the medical staff.
