Gandalf instantly countering his "Good morning" with a problem is a test to see how sincere Bilbo is. It has another layer of meaning, that Gandalf is the classic archetype of the sage, and the sage and the trickster have in common that they don’t play the ordinary game. For example there's a zen koan where a student asks his master to pass him the knife, and he passes it with the blade forward, to which the student says "Can you turn it towards you?" and he answers "What would you do if I turned it towards me?". Bilbo found a clever answer that gets around having to choose. But because he doesn't choose, he admits that his "Good morning" was vague. So Gandalf's disappointed reaction isn't because he felt he got defeated by Bilbo, but because Bilbo thinks he is clever but actually revealed his insincerity. Gandalf senses that Bilbo has grown spoiled by his comforts, that he is not truly happy even though he is living in the idyllic Shire. That's why he decides it's a good thing to get him out into the world to broaden his mind, so he can learn to appreciate his life sincerely.

Acting between two great actors is a treat.
Martin Freeman
Martin Freeman is my favourite actor❤️
Hobbit was such a masterpiece man i love it more than lotr
The moment you realise that Gandalf looks a lot like Dumbledore from Harry Potter.
I think he meant that it is a good morning whether he likes it or not. Then gets intimidated by how gandalf sarcastically sees through his rudeness
In a way, Gandalf actually sets the whole story of the Lord of the Rings in motion by asking Bilbo to join him on a Hobbits Journey.
Gandalf is that friend that your parents don't want you to hang out with because he is a bad influence.
I paused the video between 1:20 and 1:21 and got a goofy screen shot of Bilbo sticking his tongue out. Why did that cheer me up so much?...
Ronin Kassaiken ikr
Martin Freeman really carried these movies. He's bloody perfect. Take out all the extra stuff that they threw in and these movies are actually pretty good.
