Queen ll is probably the biggest jewel in Queen's crown. In my opinion, Dear Freddie's Black side of Queen ll is very much a chronological record of his incarnation into what he was meant to become. To truly appreciate how he was able to achieve this, one would need to dig deep into his familial and personal relationship dynamics at the onset of his stellar career....It's all there in the lyrics.
Freddie said it took him a very long time to write this. He started it before Queen. It is the precursor to BORAP. I can see the first big harmony at the beginning took you by surprise. I had to laugh. I always wish it was the first time I was hearing it. I love it. I think it is about a lot of different things, some fantasy some real things that happened to him in boarding school. It really doesn’t matter. I just appreciate all the changes and surprises and of course all of their musicianship. Freddie always came to the studio prepared with exactly the way he wanted it to go down. Genius. Your reactions, as I’ve said before, are so refreshingly literate. I’m sure you will listen ti it many more times. So don’t be afraid to come back with more of your reaction. It takes a long time to absorb it all.
“NOW DO THE MARCH OF THE BLACK QUEEN ...” 🖤🖤 My #2 favorite Queen song!! Love the beauty & the vile of the Black Queen!! Always compelling the listener to march .. AND .. to march completely!! My favorite part is Brian’s guitar riff with Freddie’s piano urging the march!! Love it 🖤
Hi Debra We have similar Queen taste✌🏼 1 Somebody to love. 2 A winters tale 3 Play the game 4 March of the black Queen 5 Brighton Rock ( sometimes White Queen Hammersmith 1975 replaces any of the 4 but Never number 1 ) Must admit except for number 1 songs have moved in and out of the four 😂 but this is usually my list ( painful to have to choose… even with top 10 )

I LOVE this song!! It's Bo Rhap before there was a Bo Rhap. On the 1st 3 albums Freddie has multiple songs set in the magical world of Rhye (which he made up for his little sister when he was young) so when I listen to it I hear the lyrics from that point of view. Freddie's lyrics (especially on their early work) are often extremely cryptic and can be widely interpreted and he was adamant that the listener draw their own conclusions so he never elaborated on HIS meaning of the lyrics.
This song is kick-a$$ rock and roll in my opinion. It hinges between hard rock and psychedelic rock and does so seamlessly. Throw in a bit of fantasy and you have a Mercury composition that gives you a bit of insight of where the band will go in the future. Thank you for your reaction to this outstanding song.
To me this song is chaotic, beautiful and utterly compelling. As to the meaning of the lyrics, it's Freddie so it's anybody's guess but I incline towards fantasy. Listened to your Queen reactions for a while, but this is one of favourite songs so gotta sub. Thank you

I've listened to this song numerous times and each time I think about it differently. This time it occurred to me that Freddie, with all his musical genius, is playing a massive joke. The Black Queen "tattoos her pies" and "doesn't dot her i's". And then there is the unrelated verse at the end which begins with a comic whistle like that we used to hear in vaudeville. Anyway, I appreciate your reaction to this befuddling song, which I do love.
For me it's about the black side of England with colony. Remember Freddie was born in Zanzibar as an Indian Parsee... "The black Queen poking in the pile"...
Zanzibar was not a British colony. they ended slavery there and it became a British protectorate but Arabs ruled there and had for 200 years until the revolt in 1964 Arabs were the biggest slave traders of everyone

Hate to be a burst in your bubble. This isn’t in stereo. There are stereo tricks and eargasms that makes this what it should be. Not sure if it’s your gear or what but you need to hear it with vocals, guitars, drums and bass all swirling around in your head.
