Maybe the bat refers to Tricos ability to see in complete darkness due to their glowing eyes like in one scene of the game. Although, it also reminds me of a cat. And yes, I am aware that bats don't literally see but use super sonic sounds in the darkness. Really cool theory, though. Never thought of that.
In reality this footage is based on a real book ! "Historiae naturalis de insectis libri III". a zoologic historic encyclopedia, made by the Dr. Jan Jonston. Look it up, it's really cool and weird. Old drawings from other times. With that said, I like your analysis on the choice of the animals. I t makes sense, but I think they just put them because it depict old drawing of animals in a weird way... a way we are not used to see and an old way. Giving us a weird feeling of fantastical beast. And also, that trico is a totally forgotten one, but that "trully existed" like the others. Of course he didn't, but it gives the impression that it was once a living creature of our planet.
The music is perfect pretty much, reminds me of how calm the title music for Mirror's Edge was, just a complete sense of "I'm going to stay at the title screen for a bit m'kay?"
I love how this opening sequence subconsciously tricks your brain into going "yes Trico's, a well known mythical creature that's always existed in the human lexicon" by slowly transitioning from well known animals, to popular mythical animals, to finally Trico. Also this music gets me every time, I don't know if its a sense of sadness or wonder or foreboding but it gives me chills

This makes me wonder where and when this game takes place for it to have creatures from our mythology/world.
