ILS Approach... Canadian Style! | Full IFR Approach and Landing Pilot Vlog

  • Today I had to fly an ILS approach into a snowy Canadian airport (CYQU). Winter flying in Canada is full of surprises and never a dull moment and todays flight was no different. With moderate icing conditions, overcast clouds, and potential snow and blizzard conditions at the airport... we were required to fly the ILS approach to break out below the deck and make a silky smooth touchdown. Pilots in canada should have an IFR rating if they want to fly all year round as the winter months can groun a VFR airplane for weeks! So enjoy as you watch me attempt to land the Cessna turboprop after hopefully a successful ILS approach :)

I'm happy to hear you encouraging good habits and SOPs. As a fellow (Canadian) pilot, may I suggest that you hold on cleaning up the aircraft until after vacating the runway. There are a number of reasons for this, but it's important to keep your head up and eyes out while still at a relatively high speed and on an active runway. Also, you may inadvertently select the wrong switch. Just the same as during the takeoff roll; during the landing rollout, your focus should be on only one thing - maintaining positive control of the aircraft. If/when you move up to larger aircraft, this becomes quite a bit more important. So, I would suggest that you try to change that habit. I understand that things are bit different when you're single pilot. However, I'd argue that it's even more important in a single pilot environment, as there's nobody else there to monitor you and the aircraft. Fly safe out there!

Hey!! Thanks so much for the advice! Really good advice at that so I appreciate it. Definitely a common habit and I remember trying to break the habit of entering routing and picking up clearances while taxiing which was not a good habit! So now I try to just slow down, be prepared more ahead of time for the departure. But I will take that advice to clear the runway before cleaning up the airplane, very good advice! I’ll pin this comment on top so others can see it as well! :) thanks 🙏 :) cheers!!

There are lots of great aviation related channels but it took me while to stumble upon someone who is also from Canada. Love the content, as someone who is making a career switch and finally pursuing a long time dream of becoming a pilot, these videos help so much! Keep up the great content!

I used to work as a refueller at YQU! I remember listening to the radio and always hearing the Jazz, WestJet and other corporate traffic reporting from IKBIR and knowing they were close to landing and having to grab my stuff to marshall them in during the brutal winters and wind 😂

Hope to see you around AB or BC as I work on my CPL 🤞🏼

I get to right seat and fly some in a Conquest 2 441 that has the honeywell engines. They are such a great all around plane and work horse! Can fly fast, carry lots of weight, and not burn tons of fuel! Great video as always!

@@EvanLuft based out of KBPK. We own a 6/260 but getting twin time and extra commercial experience get to fly the 441. Love your vids. We had the 441 in Wichita KS at yingling about month ago getting some Phases done and they had a 425 in there completely gutted. Was getting huge upgrade. Was really cool to see that then your video of yours getting done.
