Thank you very much for watching, hope you all enjoyed the video! prrt1steamlocomotivetrust.org/ - Please help fund the T-1 Trust! They are a wonderful organization, building an advanced new 4-4-4-4 T-1 steam locomotive from scratch!
As of today May 3, 2019; One of these giants [ Union Pacific #4014 ] is officially under steam ready to represent it's class and reclaim the throne as the World's Largest Operating Steam Locomotive.
I saw a story how when it came time to cut them up there were lots of men absolutely heart broken by having to dismantle them, they were so beloved and prized. Still, it is a blessing that *EIGHT ( 8 )* of them survived! So, that is well above average, since many great locomotives now no longer exist at all...
It would be so neat to watch them all run together, although I doubt that would ever happen, but who knows, maybe for the 100th anniversary of their production 4012 or 4004 will get restored or something
Big Boy 4017 in Green Bay , was sandblasted and repainted in 1986, but winter came in too fast, so they dropped the project until 1987, with the engine covered with a patchwork of old paint, and rust and yellow primer, so they started over from scratch and sandblasted again, then primer painted in Yellow paint over the entire loco. I was the summer employee and got close up photos of the rust patterns, plus I climbed on top and got photos of the top of the boiler , from the double smokestacks and whistle, to the cab and tender. Then they had to try and move it to switch some other cars out, but it derailed the 4 center drivers on the firemans' left side on each side of the center cylinders. It was on the ties nearly 6 days until the C&NW RR came with 2 GP-7's, and a 50' foot gondola as a spacer, and using wooden oak blocks and old tie plates to finally get it back on track. Pictures and stories are in the local Press-Gazette, and News Chronicle. They uncoupled the Cnw helpers and re-spiked the tracks, then re-coupled, and shoved the 4017 onto the new display track specially built outside the North wall of the Mccormick Pavillion, and they were supposed to build a new extension of the roof and new wall around it, but that never happened. A contractor repainted it into Black, white and silver trim. But because it still was outside next to the roof, whenever it rained, it was like Niagra Falls, then after the snow melted, it dripped on the 4017. In only 18 months, that new paint was ruined. The museum had to start again for a 3rd time, and it cost nearly $12,000. Finally in 2001 in was moved to its new site, and the Lenfestey Reception Center was built around, cutting off the track, and trapping it inside for the past 17 years. But it can be removed by taking down the Eastern wall, and shifting the track over to the Track 4 that is close by and still open to the outside.

I've seen the Big Boy at Henry Ford museum in Derborn Michigan many times . I t blows you away how big that thing is when you stand next to it . I would imagine that it is in the best shape of all the ones remaining because it's always been kept inside a heated building . It is upsetting to see so many of the 8 being left outside in the elements to just rust away and deteriorate . They should at least have a covered roof over them. I would really love to see more of them brought back to life, but I can imagine it costs millions to restore one. Thank you Union Pacific for having the wisdom and forward thinking to bring 4018 back to life. Not many corporations would be willing to spend the time and money that it takes to do it.
The giant locomotive at the Henry ford museum is not a big boy. It is an Allegheny number 1601. That Allegheny has been indoors for over 50 years since it was retired, so it's very well preserved and in immaculate condition and should be an easy restoration. The question is, how can it get towed out of the building?
I assumue one of the 4 Big Boys you saw was 4017 at the National Railroad Museum in Green Bay, Wisconsin? Given the fact your icon has LNER 4489 'Dominion of Canada' on it, and fellow A4 Pacific Dwight D. Eisenhower is on display there along with 4017.
4014 was at the Pomona Fair Grounds in Pomona, Ca. It was determined to be the best Big Boy for rebuilding. Currently in Cheyenne, Wy being rebuilt to be ready for the 150 year celebration of the Golden Spike in 2019. I saw them move the 4014 from the Fairgrounds-after 51 years, it moved quite easily-truly amazing.
I wouldn't mind driving back down there from Canada next summer's road trip. My blast through the city was too short. Crushed for time my heart almost cried as I couldn't spend and entire day or two inside the museum. Cheyenne really has a gem of a museum there.
For many many years the 4018 sat right outside the Cotton Bowl in Fair Park in Dallas. This is where the TX State Fair also occurs. I have been all over it as a boy. I looked at it every time my father took us to Cowboys games from 62-70. We usually parked close to it. You couldn't miss it. Sometimes the gate was open, sometimes closed, but was always open when the Fair was going on in October. It and the remaining cars are in the Dallas Museum were moved to Frisco TX just outside Dallas near Plano and also near the new Dallas Cowboys practice facility.
I drove down to Milford, Utah when 4014 was being moved from Los Angeles to Cheyenne. To my lasting regret I had not yet mastered my new digital camera, so although I got a number of still photos, I got no video at all.
I visited Steamtown National Historical Park in Scranton, PA on Monday, September 24,2012. I seen Big Boy 4012, I took 2 pictures of it and it is on my end table in my home. In my home in the living room, I have books on tra8ns & railroads on display. The Big Boys were the largest steam locomotives that were ever built and ever ran.
The Union Pacific 'Big Boy' is my most favored steam locomotive. X4017 is at the National Railroad Museum in Green Bay, WI. I don't like that far away from it. My grandsons love this place. In fact, we're due for a visit. Then years ago, I seen one in Omaha, Nebraska. They rest in Kenefick Park. By they I mean (1) Union Pacific 'Centennial' or 'Big Jack' (road number 6900) and (1) Union Pacific 'Big Boy ' (road number X4023). They can be seen as you drive by on the freeway.
That's a lot of locomotives for UP to have given up for display rather than scrap them. UP is to be lauded for preservation of its historic equipment. The locomotives displayed indoors one would think are in the best condition, but none of those were selected for restoration.
I grew up playing on Big Boy in Cheyenne Wyoming long before the fence was to keep people out!! My Beloved Brother in Law was William “Bill “ Riley Sr. , UPRR Locomotive Engineer...even operated 8444,He received posthumously the rare “Golden Spike Award “ it sits in the Golden Spike Museum in Bailey Yard , North Platte Nebraska!!! Cheyenne “ Live the Legend “
So Presenting the 9th Picture: the Bonus Pic. Only 1/17 Other Big boys Saved From Scrap: designated as Union Pacific Big-Boy #4002 preserved in its New home of the western American Railroad Museum in Barstow, CA. As part of the newer footage.
The only 6/25 Union Pacific Big-Boys #'s 4002, 4015, 4016, 4019, 4020, & 4024. 2 b saved in 3 newer homes of The Western American Railroad Museum In Barstow, CA, & Dallas's New Railroad museum.
Well think about it? 4014 is being restored in the UP engine house, Cheyenne, WY. And 4004 is in Cheyenne, Holliday Park, WY. It wouldn't take very long to transfer the locomotive from A to B, and as I've said before, as the oldest surviving Big Boy. It should be restored to steam after 4014 is up and running,
It’s not that they can’t restore it they could, but they figured out that trying to run both 844, 4014 and 3985 is too much That’s why 3985 will be restored under a new organization the railroad heritage museum of Midwest America whom own the Milwaukee road 261 Another big boy may not be restored unless someone really gets funds to move it and do so, but if not we can be there thankful we have 4014 to keep the legacy of all 8 in preservation, and all 25 around for years to come
So Dallas Saves only 4/25 as part of the newer museum Collection. In 1982. Designated as Engines #'s 4016, 4019, 4020, & 4024 4 A newer home. As A newer Scene 4 A Lionel Christmas Part 1's 14th Anniversary DVD redo.

Now I'm wondering: Will UP go on and refurbish another Big Boy? (Thinking maybe either 4017 or 4018) Or will they completely rebuild them all and have it as a Might 8 fleet of Big Boys that one day you would get a picture of all 8 of them steamed up in the morning sun in a rail yard.
It saddens my heart to know that these beautiful beasts are all but gone. My did was a railroad man and he always told me when there'd be a BigBoy coming through town. We didn't get them regularly in Nebraska, but they'd go into Omaha often enough for some show or another that we sure knew of them and all my buddies and me would head down to the tracks to watch them go by. We saw lots of Challenger 4-6-4's go through but mostly they were the 844 class engines pulling freight and we grew to love them all. They are sure missed today.
The one in Denver is the only one I've seen - back in '88 and it was outside then. That was 4005 and that is inside now, although I think it is still owned by the same museum. Number 4014 is at UP Cheyenne being restored to steam. UP surveyed all of the remaining Big Boy's before deciding on 4014. Even then they had to spend nearly a year getting it ready to roll, then push it over temporary tracks across a parking lot for half a mile, to get it on to any rails to anywhere. Then it took weeks to haul it to Cheyenne. An epic journey. I am considering coming over from the UK when it finally steams - awesome!
Can you actually blow 4004's whistle even though it's on display like 4014 was before it was removed from the rail giants museum in 2013 speaking of which how can you even blow it if it isn't operational?
This is from 2014 - who would've thought #4014 will be coming back? Now this Big Boy is back on the tracks - all thanks to the UP Steam Shop crew in Cheyenne, WY ruclips.net/video/xT6B3a9eZzM/видео.html
As an aspiring nuclear engineer I want to convert one to run on new types of reactors being developed. Well see about cost to run then. If run on thorium it be cheaper to run in terms of fuel as thorium is found in more places than coal is!
Man, I could only imagine what condition there in since some are just exposed to the elements like that. At least one of these Marvel's are being restored.
they all look like they're in great condition externally... i hope to see them all restored someday in the future, even if it's just so they can be stored inside somewhere safe from the effects of weather. 4014 was in terrible shape in the boiler when they pulled the cover off. Feel bad for 'em.
their last video they shared shows the overall "health" of the boiler without the cover. And couple that with the length of time we haven't heard from them? It's pretty safe to say the damage done to the 4014 is quite a bit more than they were expecting within the main structure. It's not really a "where did you hear this" but more of a "where did you *see* this" and that would have been their last yourtube update on the BB's progress in the shop.
I've seen the video of the boiler stripped. I think the issue of no new update was the 844 was taken on a trip for a while, so they were busy doing that. At least, that's my theory.
Nice video, but would have been better if you gave the locations. I know one is Ogdon Utah, and the other is the LA County Fairgrounds before the UP took it away for restoration.
For some reason 4012 just gets on my nerves about it’s appearance maybe it’s the black wheels or that the eccentric rod is thinner than the other 7’s eccentric rod and 4006 being my favorite because of the rods being equal in width or height or whatever
Steelerdude each Big Boy had about 6500 hp, and tons of tractive effort. I think I read one steamer could pull a 68,000 ton train. Multiply that by 8 and you get approximately a 544,000 ton train
Thank you very much for watching, hope you all enjoyed the video!

In my home in the living room, I have books on tra8ns & railroads on display. The Big Boys were the largest steam locomotives that were ever built and ever ran.
At least one of these beasts has been restored!!!
4017 in Green Bay is the absolute best condition well worth operational restoration sure would not take too much to fire it up
I am giving a lot of thought on restoring 4017 or 4012 to full operation
Yeah, good on the museum for storing 4017 in a climate-controlled room
4014 represent. Welcome back.
I got to see 4006 during the summer, man what a beast! And my first time ever seeing a Big Boy! :D
8 Big Boys preserved.
If your wondering the 3rd big boy is 4006 at St.louis museum of transportation.

Maybe a misclick by you, not a 4015, but 4014.
4017 Green Bay Wisconsin
Also one right outside St Louis in the RR museum there!
4004 should be restored to running order next. As the oldest servicing Big Boy in existence. Its a good one to reprieve.
Well think about it? 4014 is being restored in the UP engine house, Cheyenne, WY.
And
4004 is in Cheyenne, Holliday Park, WY. It wouldn't take very long to transfer the locomotive from A to B, and as I've said before, as the oldest surviving Big Boy. It should be restored to steam after 4014 is up and running,
That's the one that shouldn't be converted to oil. That one needs to remain coal powered.
It’s not that they can’t restore it they could, but they figured out that trying to run both 844, 4014 and 3985 is too much
That’s why 3985 will be restored under a new organization the railroad heritage museum of Midwest America whom own the Milwaukee road 261
Another big boy may not be restored unless someone really gets funds to move it and do so, but if not we can be there thankful we have 4014 to keep the legacy of all 8 in preservation, and all 25 around for years to come
I've seen them all except 4017, and she's on my list.
Excellent sound my friend! Love it...
LET'S GO 4023!!! MY HOMETOWN ENGINE
I've seen 4005, 4012, 4017 and 4023 personally.
Poor 4005 and the operating crew RIP
4005 was rebuilt, just a few dents on the boiler but thats all
I've seen 4012 and operating 4014
What a magnificent beast.
Soon, oh so soon we will have one in steam again! Cool video and subscribed!
Where was the audio from when 4014 was shown?
1:25 Can't wait till it's back on the rails!
By great taste all these back on the tracks
Only 8 made in all time, REALLY, I like that model
I like how Big Boy steam whistles sound. I wonder where you downloaded that Big Boy whistle from. I sure would enjoy having a ringtone like that.
The first whistle was from a video I made of SP&S 700. See my videos of 700 when you can. The other whistle was 4014 from an air compressor
Excellent!
Robert Martin, this is the first I have heard of 4024 moving to Dallas, is it Dallas or to Frisco TX. North of Dallas where 4018 is already?
The whistles:
SP&S 700 whistle
N&W A/Y6 class
4014’s whistle on air
awesome train video

4014: Union Pacific Railroad, Cheyenne, Wyoming 34°05′0.456″N 117°46′11.38″W - Reacquired by Union Pacific in 2013 and moved from its static display in Fairplex Rail Giants Museum in Pomona California to be restored to full steam operation and operated in excursion service.

I saw the 4018 in person.
So Union Pacific Big-Boy #10 4015 in the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC. As A newer scene 4 the 16th Anniversary DVD Edition Of Learn About States, & Captials.
Robert Martin ft
4015 is scrapped.
Damn 4017 looks great. I’d love to see her fired up
I saw 4017 once when I went to America
Now I'm wondering: Will UP go on and refurbish another Big Boy? (Thinking maybe either 4017 or 4018) Or will they completely rebuild them all and have it as a Might 8 fleet of Big Boys that one day you would get a picture of all 8 of them steamed up in the morning sun in a rail yard.
I don’t think so, as much of the other big boys are in bad condition, only 4014 runs and I think thats good enough
the 4014 has the best whistle out of any steamer, I cant wait to see it back in action.
In my opinion, 844s whistle sounds better, but 4014s whistle is still pretty good.
Cool video I love the big boy
4018 is in the museum in frisco
It saddens my heart to know that these beautiful beasts are all but gone. My did was a railroad man and he always told me when there'd be a BigBoy coming through town. We didn't get them regularly in Nebraska, but they'd go into Omaha often enough for some show or another that we sure knew of them and all my buddies and me would head down to the tracks to watch them go by. We saw lots of Challenger 4-6-4's go through but mostly they were the 844 class engines pulling freight and we grew to love them all. They are sure missed today.
1:23 where did you get the audio?
i live really close to 4017!
oh my god!!! 0:49 that big boy is in need of some MAJOR clean up and repairs! so weather beaten! that mueseum may not be taking care of her!!!
That one is in St. Louis, I think it has since been cleaned and repainted.
We had one here in Denver at Fornby museum, I think is in Cheyenne WY being restores, if I am not mistaken I think that is number 4017
You could have indicated where each one is located in case people might want to go see them!
What if all 25 big boys were preserved?
That would be great and I can see museums like the IRM would get one
I just heard back in its hay days the 4005 got in a huge derailment
The 8th picture was taken in Omaha Nebraska. I've seen it personally.
8th as in last picture
Rip For the operating crew on BigBoy 4005
I saw one big boy and it was the 4006 in st louis
Can you actually blow 4004's whistle even though it's on display like 4014 was before it was removed from the rail giants museum in 2013 speaking of which how can you even blow it if it isn't operational?
This is from 2014 - who would've thought #4014 will be coming back? Now this Big Boy is back on the tracks - all thanks to the UP Steam Shop crew in Cheyenne, WY ruclips.net/video/xT6B3a9eZzM/видео.html
Are any of the original drivers around to reminisce?
Sad that the others were scrapped.
Where did you hear that? The steam shop has been quiet about the restoration.
their last video they shared shows the overall "health" of the boiler without the cover.
4018 was sent to frisco to be put on display
Im not sure when its gonna be restored
But i cant wait 8 or are them are restored
*_O H H E Y I D I D N T E X P E C T Y O U H E R E_*
I live a little closer to 4018
Nice video, but would have been better if you gave the locations. I know one is Ogdon Utah, and the other is the LA County Fairgrounds before the UP took it away for restoration.
Is it me or does 4017 appear to be in the best condition, cosmetically at least?
4017 Does look in the best condition to me also.
This big boy need come back with 4014
be great if they restored all of these but the one on the hill at Omaha.
Fun fact I got to see 4006
4 the 10th anniversary Edition DVD remake of Pent-Rex Christmas Trains.
does anyone else want to drive this gigantic beast on the street?
Poor 4006 shes in such rough shape :(
I've seen 4017 myself
4018 is in frisco tx
I have a video on my channel of washing 4023 a few years ago.
For u to know 4005 was involved in a tragic derailment on abril 27th 1953
4006 is my fav
Dude, don't forget that some of these are actually named big girls
R.I.P UP Big Boy 4005
Its in museum
For some reason 4012 just gets on my nerves about it’s appearance maybe it’s the black wheels or that the eccentric rod is thinner than the other 7’s eccentric rod and 4006 being my favorite because of the rods being equal in width or height or whatever
Wonder how many cars they could pull if all 8 were in the consist....boggles the mind....
Steelerdude each Big Boy had about 6500 hp, and tons of tractive effort. I think I read one steamer could pull a 68,000 ton train. Multiply that by 8 and you get approximately a 544,000 ton train
I heard that Union Pacific Big Boy #4004 in Wyoming is said to be Restored
Nope. 4014
