    I like your never give up attitude. I started a plumbing repair business over 20 years ago and I was determined to never give up. I only work about 20 hours a week now doing plumbing and am building infrastructure for a backyard nursery. I have about an acre to work with and don’t live in a subdivision. I’m growing my own plants because here there’s no sales tax for plants you grow yourself and I know it will take a few years to get going that way but that’s okay since I still have income from plumbing. I love plants and growing them. I can deal with the headaches of running a business since I’ve already been doing it for so long. Hang in there. It’ll get better.

    VERY few channels give the reality of backyard nurseries. So many glorify the business, but leave out how much they spend on water, infrastructure, etc. This is true for backyard gardening channels showing massive yields, but don't reveal the cost per unit(and how buying organic at the store would have been WAY cheaper). There are so many fraud gardening and farming channels out there. Glad you are giving the reality of all this.

      Truth doesn't sell neither does it get views. Reason for all the misinformation out there. I can easily make a video faking massive profits and how easy it is to get started, boom instant tons of views vs reality like this video.

    The part about the wind knocking down the plants and them dying - so true! I'm not in the desert but I have a greenhouse. I was ready to open my first garden selling kiosk 2 years ago and in spring, I ran out of water about a week before I could start selling plants. I had only a well back then.. couldn't water the greenhouse, everything bolted, lost it all.
    I worked now for 2 years to gather water tubs, make them a levelled platform to sit them on, install gutters on my barn to catch the water, install the irrigation from the tubs to the garden... so much work! And most videos do not mention these things. It takes a LOT of time to get ready to sell plants or vegetables and we are vulnerable to every little weather change AND almost tied to our properties ;) but I enjoy that last part.. lol Now, we have to be prepared for frosts at times where we shouldn't have them, huge winds, long heat waves, long wet periods.. the weather isn't the same as 15 years ago.. takes lots of planning!

    Alan, great video! As a old guy I could not deal with the Cons... Buy for a determined young man like yourself the harder they make it on you the more you will learn and in the end the more successful you will be! I could have used this video 20 years ago when I started my first business. I also learned the hard way and it was not any fun. The Government has proven to never be my friend in any regards. Hey Alan, I really need to get out there to talk to you one of these weekends. After watching your video, I think I may be able to offer you some tips on how to minimize your tax liability and how to access low cost federal government subsidized loan programs for agricultural. I'm also self employed and I come from agricultural cattle ranching background and even though the local city and county make it difficult to succeed, the federal government has programs in place to help you. It's just a matter of knowing about which programs are available and who to contact to get the ball rolling. If you have any interest in learning about that let me know and I'll make some time to get to QC to talk with you. There is no incentive or financial gain for me its just one guy helping another guy. For example there are cost share programs that will pay for up to 70% of a greenhouse or hoop house, I don't know if that program is still available it depends on if the all the funds have been used up or not. Also, your new property could have been purchased with a 0% down 40 year fixed loan with govt subsidized low interest rate. You can also use the loan to purchase improvements on the land like the irrigation systems, parking lot, lot grading, shade houses, and equipment like the skid steer there, etc.

    I have to admit, plant people really are good people. I wasn’t meeting respectful moraled people until I started growing plants. I work for some else’s backyard nursery and have my own hobby nursery which is ready to supply my boss or another nursery.
    Negative: drug dealers and cops seem to know eachother. If Drug dealers fear you might be growing something that cuts into their business they tell the police you are growing weed. Not sure why they assume I would need to have a tiny hidden illegal grow when I can make big money on plants I do not need to hide. If I want to smoke that stuff I can sell fruit trees or Cassava then buy weed. Drug dealers and cops tend to be informant buddies.

    first 3 mins, SPOT on brother. I'm in financial/retirement planning for the past 12 years, through the ups and downs of interest rates, banks and insurance companies guaranteeing paltry 3-5% returns, meanwhile I put a seed in the ground and get 100s back. This quote resonates HARD with me, as it should everyone: "There seem to be but three ways for a nation to acquire wealth: the first is by war, as the Romans did, in plundering their conquered neighbors-this is robbery; the second by commerce, which is generally cheating; the third by agriculture, the only honest way, wherein man receives a real increase of the seed thrown into the ground, in a kind of continual miracle, wrought by the hand of God in his favor, as a reward for his innocent life and his virtuous industry" - ben franklin. Not to mention "money" moony mono-eye (sorry too deep) changes with the times and has no intrinsic value save what we place on it as a mental construct as a society, however plants/food will always be tangible and valuable to any and all

    • @qctropicals
      @qctropicals  8 месяцев назад

      I agree friend. Problem in our society is "commerce" has taken over the "agriculture". No longer can you trust nurseries to tell you the truth simply because truth doesn't sell.

    • @tomh4591
      @tomh4591 8 месяцев назад

      yea , I'm not one for "isms" in general, but commerce is "unfair" aka capitalism in the sense that, you sell a plant for 10, guy down the road sells for 20 same plant, people buy from him because whatever reason, that person was ripped off in a sense to the benefit of the other. When in reality, the way it should work in lieu of middle man aka "money", is a trade system (but that can't be taxed, but boy do they try with "tangible personal property tax" and the likes) you need something i have and the other way around. what a paradise that would be, if we all pursued what we loved and were good at to the point of abundance, and shared with others

    Out here in Tucson wanting to chase my dream of owning a cactus nursery. Glad I found your channel and so far every video is awesome! keep up the good work, you're very inspiring. I've had lots of days where I just feel like forgetting about my plants, but it is my dream.
